Not sure how many forum folk still play TF2, but this week is a good time to get back into the game as Valve is releasing an 'uber update' to the game including new weapons for all classes, undoubtedly some new hats, Meet the Medic and some new maps. They are releasing bits and bobs each day.
Day 1 - Updates to Heavy and Spy.
Day 2 - Updates to Sniper and Demoman.
Apparently the big update is on Thursday so Friday here I imagine.
Also, if you've never played it before this week's now is your perfect chance as they're offering a "free week" so you can play the game for free all week.

I stoppe dplaying it when they made TF2 a platform for its storefront and gimmicks. I don't think I've logged in since I got flamed by some dude wearing some ridiculous looking cap and a gun that he bought that I'd never seen before.
I expect that crap in Free-to-play titles like BF Heroes, but not TF2 that I have been playing for years and put money into to purchase a license. _________________

I can see where you're coming from, though I think the big difference between something like BF Heroes and TF2 is that fact that essentially every weapon/most hats in TF2 can be obtained in-game at random chance for free, where as in Battlefield Heroes there are distinct advantages if you purchase in-game items for cash. The cash shop in TF2 is for people who don't have the patience to 'find' the items whilst playing.
If Valve didn't provide constant updates, even if it was just new vanity hats/weapons etc, it'd have a fraction of the community compared to today.

Yeah, there's no purchase-exclusive weapons which is what F2P is all about. Nearly every weapon you can obtain via unlocking, crafting, trading or random drops (or if you don't want to wait, you can buy it). It's the same with other online FPS. You don't have access to all the guns when you first start playing Battlefield or Call of Duty. There's only one weapon I can think of that you can no longer obtain unless you trade it and that's The Big Kill which is just a reskin of the default Spy Revolver anyway.

There's not a single gameplay effecting weapon or item in TF2 that cannot be obtained freely, so I dont see a problem. When Valve start locking off gameplay changes to the rest of the community, then we have issues. _________________

Oh god. HATS HATS HATS.
MOAR HATS.
But seriously, Jarrod said it. Every single weapon which are the only things that introduce new gameplay elements can be unlocked via achievements or simply found just by playing the game. Even then, there are very few weapons that can be considered "upgrades", most are sidegrades or encourage a different way of playing a class, or just fun weapons that are clearly weaker than the original variants.
And you know the best thing about this? TF2 came out in 2007 and has had several major patches where a massive amount of new content has been added. Valve has even let the community create and make new maps and weapons and have certified them to be official content.
All for free.

I think this sums up the new Demoman weapons. No stickies or "little balls" as the Spy would say, just pure melee which is obviously easy to counter, but it's a different way top play the game and adds variety.
EDIT:
Scout's new weapons.

Well Scouts were already given an extended vertical/horizontal jump in the form of Boston Basher/Three Rune Blade self damage, but the Atomiser seems like a straight upgrade from the bat.
Kinda like the Equilizer and the GRU.
But there are some really nice weapon concepts here. All developed by Valve as well.
But it's been 2 years since Meet the Spy. GIVE ME MEET THE MEDIC NOW.

I don't know if you saw the subtle clues they posted on the blog the other day...
| TF2 Blog wrote: | 1.) It IS a "Meet the" short.
2.) It involves ONE of the two remaining classes.
3.) It's NOT the Pyro.
4.) It's the MEDIC. |
...but apparently the new Meet video is indeed the medic. It's hard to decipher, though.
TF2 is my favourite military hat simulator of all time. It's second only to WoW as my most-played PC game. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

Well they had all those doves ingame and the little screenshot in the last comic of the Medic surrounded by doves and whatnot, so it was reasonable speculation of Meet the Medic was coming out in the next month or so.
Either way, I hope it is even more fantastic than Meet the Spy. They just keep getting better and better.

Point is, it's moved it out of skill/timing jumps and in to the realm of the average. It's considerably easier to get a Force-a-nature triple jump happening than one of those. _________________

A new update. For the Solly this time. The new Rocket Launcher and Shotgun look interesting. And the Riding crop sounds fun, but it's no Equalizer replacement.
Still nothing for Pyro (my favourite class) or Engie, but hopefully they release something later today like they did with the Scout yesterday. Unless they aren't going to dedicate tomorrow's update entirely to the Medic.

The new standard Solly unlocks are dangerously approaching the territory of straight upgrades, especially the Liberty Launcher. Which I don't mind at all, since I think these weapons encourage high level Solly play with rocket juggling/jumping and finishing off wounded opponents with the shotty.
As for the Equilizer, I'm assuming the beta version will be included in the patch. Valve has finally deemed the Equilizer too strong and in the beta currently it doesn't grant a speed increase for how much health you have left.
Now just nerf the Dead Ringer as well so that teams aren't flooded with spies.

I think one less rocket is a fair trade off. It's just like the Black Box except the bonuses are different.
As for the Equalizer, I'd be happier if they kept the speeds bonus, but knocked back the damage bonus as I often use the Equalizer for the speed boost, not so much the extra damage.
The Deadringer, I agree with. It's my most hated item in the entire game.

Forgive me for the double post, but here's the Pyro's new weapon. Sadly, it's only one and it's the detonator which has been tested in TF2 Beta for a little while now. Still, the ability to flare jump is awesome. Here's a video of a test on 2Fort. Another class that has the ability to piss off those pesky snipers.

I am very, very eager to give the new Soldier weapons a go. Especially the riding crop; "Mush, Herr Doktor! The cart needs another inch!"
I'm lurking the update page now, waiting for 'Meet the Medic'. _________________

Joystiq's reporting TF2 is going free-to-play. Wow. I guess it's already well and truly paid for initial development and they pretty much just want people to buy hats now. _________________

What are the chances that people who are unwilling to pay $10 for the entire game are going to pay for in game items?

Actually ended up playing some more TF2 due to the update and meet the medic. Damn my aiming was horrendous though... need to get back into the swing of things.

After playing BC2 for awhile, I am finding it hard to spam fire in TF2 again.

Hhhhhhhhhhhhnggg! I love the flare gun, I tend to use it more than my primary (pyro is my fave class) and giving it the ability to flare-jump. OMG
