honestly I think the whole 'is this a wrpg, is this a jrpg, this isn't an rpg it's a shooter' etc etc thing is kind of pointless.
I mean I get that people grew up playing awesome WRPG's and the games of today aren't really the same genre but so what? Is Mass Effect a shooter or an rpg? Does it matter? Is it good is what matters.
I mean I'm never going to play an RTS as good as Dungeon Keeper 2 again, but I'm not going to bag out every RTS game based on the standards set by DK2. Just play them for what they are. _________________

The problem people have is that if you WANT to play a modern game like what we used to play, we can't. It's ALL been altered to a newer play style.
If there was a choice, it wouldn't be an issue, there isn't (expect for The Witcher, much love).
It's like the whole Duke Nukem Forever thing, people were expecting (actually, they were kind of told they were getting) a game that plays like FPS of old. They didn't get it, they got a game with all the same features of modern FPS games with about zero polish.

But Benza, I am playing them for what they are, and simply judging them relative to my personal taste. I dont really care what a game is labeled as, as long as I dont feel my expectations have been deceived. As said, I dont consider Mass Effect much of an RPG, but EA/BioWare calling it one doesn't prevent it from being one of my favourite new IPs of this generation. I love the games to bits.
Oblivion was based on a franchise I was very familiar with and loved. It was heavily streamlined. Regardless of its individual qualities, I felt like many of the parts I valued in older Elder Scrolls games were removed or minimised. I didn't so much feel cheated as underwhelmed. It might be a good game, but it was not the droids I was looking for.
Same goes for Fallout 3. Great game, but not the kind of role playing depth I looked forward to from a sequel to Fallout 2. Then along came New Vegas, which used the foundations of Fallout 3 to craft a more engaging and deeper traditional role playing game. Thus, I preferred New Vegas much more than Fallout 3.
It was never about individual qualities, and always about personal taste. My concerns for Skyrim rest entirely on my lack of confidence in Bethesda making a game that I want to play, skeptism backed by their last two games failing to deliver on fronts I deem most important.
I hope nobody took what I said personally, as I didn't mean it to be an attack. I'm just saying that Bethesda haven't made the kind of game I really want to play in awhile, and I hope Skyrim changes that pattern. _________________

I'm actually hesitant to play it again, as I'm almost certain that it has aged like ****. |
If you have a decent enough PC you can make it look twice as good as the stuff we've seen of Skyrim... hi-res texture mods, god rays, depth of field etc
Head over to tesnexus.com for all that stuff. There's also a bunch of really cool mods that change the gameplay. My favourite is Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. It adds heaps of stuff, but my favourite part is how it changes leveling. Apart from how it changes the character leveling, enemy leveling is handled really well. Like, you go into a dungeon and the deeper you get, the higher leveled the enemies and the better the loot they have. Whether you survive is another thing though...

I have complete faith in Bethesda bringing in a simplified streamlined title for the mass audience. Each iteration of the Elder Scrolls series involved reducing the complexity and depth of the games. I still rate Daggerfall better than Morrowind, which was better than Oblivion. Out of all those games, the Morrowind world had a lot of character.

The thing that bugs me is that does anyone actually play these games for something accessible and easy to play? I though the whole selling point of there games was that they're these immense behemoths of games full of rich lore and crazy amounts of minutia. _________________

Exactly man. You raised the point every one of us makes or thinks in response to these statements of "accessibility". I'm playing Skyrim for the depth, the lore, the exploration, the customisation. My friends didn't pick up and play for something easy to play either. I don't know anyone casual who has played the TES series for casual play. _________________

The game companies seem to be locked into thinking there is some mythical casual gaming nirvana that has untold riches waiting for them at the moment, very annoying. _________________ kill, kill, kill.....the white man. Kill the white man, kill

It's "just business" I guess. The trend will expire and evolve to a new one. If only the new one could cater for core gamers.

If that is true, then I look forward to Skyrim having iron sights
Didn't Oblivion already cater to the casual with that ridiculous "everything is your level" system? I like my areas impassable until I hit level X thanks! _________________

Do you mean perks as is in the perks system from Fallout 3?
If it's the latter, I think that's pretty nifty. The perks were always changing playstyles in F3 so should be fun in Skyrim. _________________

Just had another thought:
Killstreaks.
Kill 5 dragons without dying and you can nuke someone. Or maybe ride in a chopper. Not sure yet. I'll have to go play CoD to see how it works. _________________

Skyrim is keeping the awesome mod support of Oblivion and Morrowind right?
Surely someone will mod that in (if it's not already in Morrowind or Oblivion). If not give me a buzz and I'll figure out how to make a horse that can fly and let you shoot 2000-6000 fireballs per second. I'll leave re-skinning the horse as a chopper to you (given your animation skills are way better than mine). _________________
