Well I have to say that I am a decent way into Chapter 2 and now the combat has become so much easier. In many cases, probably a bit too easy. I am mage spec though, so that might explain why things have suddenly became really easy.

Why is it so easy being a mage? I didn't find any spell to be particular useful other than quen (and maybe the push spell).

Precisely because of Quen, once you upgrade it you get free damage for doing nothing. You have free traps that you can string together to make huge traps, Igni which is a free bomb once you get it to level 2 (in a group it'll max out your adrenaline in seconds) and a really good adrenaline move (though probably the weakest).
Basically you get an awesome shield and a never ending supply of bombs and traps which would otherwise require crafting.
I'm not trying to diminish what you may have found difficulty with. Mage doesn't really become easy mode until the last third game along with Swordmaster (which becomes a beast tank). Alchemy is either the more tedious or harder option depending on how you look at it. You never really turn into superman like the other 2 paths. _________________

So I finally got the game in the post (4 weeks later!)... Played 3/4 of the prologue so far and it looks absolutely stunning running on High spec.
I'm not quite sure what they've done to the combat yet though, I get light and heavy attacks but there doesn't seem to be much reason or rhyme to when I should use each.
Also I'm confused with the Collector's Ed. DLC. It says to claim it in a tab on the launcher, but the launcher has no tabs. Then there's supposedly been all of the DLC released for free anyway, but I can't find a "Roche Commando Jacket" anywhere =P
And again cheers to Denny for pointing out the statue replacement program - shot them an email with a photo. Hopefully I get a replacement that actually has a nose. _________________

There are certain combos that can be strung together based on how you use heavy and light attacks, but for most part heavy = more damage, light = less damage.
Following a parry, I usually follow up with a heavy then light, as sometimes just a light followed by another light can be blocked.

Here is something I posted up in the rpg thread a while ago. This image (which doesn't really have any spoilers, except possibly at a pacing level) shows the storyline paths for The Witcher 2. I don't think it has been mentioned in this thread yet.
Anyway, I'll include it as a link as opposed to an image. It's probably more of interest to someone who was familiar with the first game or has completed this game once already.

I started playing The Witcher 1 yesterday. My rig is fairly beef and it runs @ 1080p on HIGH from about 600 fps to 20 fps (probably about 80 fps on average)
Does anybody know how they will translate to the sequel? I'm worried I won't be able to run it on 'awesome looking' setting.. _________________ Shin J Leon.

What are your specs?
I've got a beasty PC, and I get between 40 - 60 fps in The Witcher 2 maxed out (Ubersampling off). I did a playthrough of The Witcher before jumping into the sequel, and I do remember some absurd frame drops here and there.
The NWN2 engine (which The Witcher was running off) is a sack of unoptimised crap. _________________

Should be able to play Ultra without ubersampling fine. NVIDIA's new driver set as well helps out SLI usage on Witcher 2 heaps as well, so yeah, should be right. _________________

I run it on High spec with a single 470 and an I7 Processor so you will defiantly be good.
I just realised I have 3.29GB in the save directory for The Whitcher 2.

Just started The Witcher 2 today. It looks gorgeous but I can't help but be bothered by how jerky the camera feels when I just move around. Is it because I have Vsync turned off? I'm getting about 45-75FPS depending on the area according to fraps.
Also is it a bad idea to have texture memory size set to very high? I read it has something to do with video card memory so I thought, seeing as my GPU has 2GB, it should be okay.

2GB is fine fine very high. You could probably max out video memory without any trouble.
Also, possibly. A fluctuating framerate with a lack of vsync tends to cause tearing. Turn it on and see how you go. _________________

Thanks Jarrod. I'll try vsync the next time I boot the game up and see how it goes.

I think The Witcher 2 is the best looking game I've seen. I can't believe a DX9 game can actually look this good.

At first I thought this game was terribly optimised because I was getting 1-30 fps on medium settings! I was thinking how the hell can this be since I was running 2 x 570's in SLi and smashed every other game.
Then I realised I was the idiot and hadn't updated my nVidia drivers since around february (lol 4 months out of date) and lo and behold I could run the game at ultra smooth as hell. With ubersampling it drops a bit but its not unplayable per say, but I like to play my games really smooth so I turned that off.
This game is gorgeous looking and gives me eyegasms. Loving the music, voice acting and story so far, just finished the prologue. Fantastic game can't wait to get "into the mood" so I can play this game in big chunks and really take it in.
I play it with a 360 controller after a friend suggest I do so, and it did indeed feel more natural. (I don't even play with my brothers 360 and it felt more natural than laying with a keyboard lol) That being said it might have been the lag because I haven't played with the keyboard/mouse after the new nVidia drivers.
This is a must buy for all PC gamers, and I hope this makes it to consoles and becomes mainstream because gamers alike cannot miss out on this. _________________ xfire = andylulz

I've started playing it with a PS3 controller on my new asus rog laptop (can run it on ultra, yay) and it's so much nicer to play than with the keyboard.
Really loving it so far, the Euros really know how to nail a quality setting and storyline. _________________

Playing through the game a second time on hard really exposes the game's weaknesses.
Witcher 2 is the kind of game that I feel fits the title "flawed masterpiece", something Denny used to describe the first game (which I'd agree to, though a lesser extent). There's nothing about the Witcher 2 that I feel is bad, but so very much of the game is in desperate need of polish and better design that its hard not to criticise to a certain degree.
Combat really is average at best. Its like a poor mans Demon's Souls, never as responsive as it should be nor as well balanaced as it has to be to compete. Its either extremely hard with a steep learning curve, or embarrisingly easy. The idea is really good and a perfect fit for the type of game it is, not to mention a huge improvement over the original, but christ does it have some noticable flaws.
Then its all the other little things. Crafting? Enchantments? Alchemy? Great ideas, all let down by a shitty menu and inventory system, something sadly so many goddamn RPGs succumb too. Protip to developers; lists are not a good way to present data. Nobody wants to read spreadsheets. Inventory content and the crafting system is so poorly organised and presented that its not really worth the hassle of investment.
The funny thing is that even with so many flaws, the Witcher 2 is still one of the best games I've played this year, and still a must play title for anybody interested in role playing and action games with a heavy story focus and set within a high fantasy universe. Its a really great game.
But I hope to hell that CDP take the same level of improvement from the original to this sequel and apply a similar level of advancement to (hopefully) a third game. If they can do that, they truly will be sitting on perfect game design. Until then though, the Witcher 2 is a flawed masterpiece in my mind, and at times a bit too frustrating for its own good. _________________

I have a few questions about the Witcher 1.
I know the ones you can get from giving 10 trophies to the Royal Huntsmen can be imported into the second game but how is it done? Through the save file?
Also, if finishing the first game, if I decide to play again, does all the items from previous game gets imported?
Sorry if this has been asked before, don't want to dig through 10 pages and I've started taking interest in this thread only more recently. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

When you start The Witcher 2 you can choose to import a save file from The Witcher. None of the choices you made really make any worthwhile impact, but some of the loot makes it across, mostly the unique weapons and armor, which gives you a nice boost early in the game. All the equipment will be in your inventory when The Witcher 2 starts.
No idea for your second question. I never bothered with any NG+ in the first game, and dont even know if it exists. _________________

Sweet, didn't know there was a special armor in the first game. Thanks for answering, Jarrod . I probably won't be playing the first game again anyway (that question was more for curiosity sake) since I got gifted the 2nd game and it is sitting there waiting to be played!. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"
