Read an interview with Nintendo game designer/producer/director Katsuya Eguchi in which he mentions possible uses for the Wii-U controller in a Metroid game:

Quote:
“I can’t give you any details now,” he said, “but I’m sure there will be a new Metroid release making use of the new controller, not just to control Samus and her ship but also to give the player a new source of information. Maybe the player is looking at the screen but has the information that they need to defeat the enemy in their hands.” Maybe you could hold the Wii controller up to the screen and scan your enemy, I suggested. “You could look through the screen and scan your enemy and find where it’s weakspot is.”

Personally I'd love a 2D HD Metroid but it's more probable that it will be a 3D affair.

Maybe they could have certain 2D areas in the 3D game, kinda like some of the morph ball areas in the Prime games, and they are played on the controller before reverting back to the big screen once Samus is upright again.

Would definitely be handy for a ship/armour interface and equipping weapons/abilities on the go.

Anyone have any cool ideas about how the Wii-U controller could be used for Metroid?

Constant displayed map in a 2D game.
I wouldn't have thought it would be that big a deal until I played the DS castlevanias and then went back to playing without a constant map reference. That thing is a fucking godsend.

I love the idea of scanning your enemy with the controller to find a weakspot. That's just nifty. The whole alt vision thing could be awesome with it too, like in (I think the first prime?) had the different visors like the x-ray one? Instead of effecting the tv screen would use able by tracking the controller over the screen.

All the talk of cool things with the controller makes me wonder though, if you build game designs around being able to do this cool shit with it, then don't you lose the whole being able to play on the controller if someone takes the TV? That seemed like a pretty big push from Nintendos part so would they let people develop a game that coudln't be played not just on the screen?

Definitely down with morph ball puzzles mixing the main screen and the pad. I'd love to see the main navigation taking place on the big screen (like Prime), while the touch pad displays a pipes-esque puzzle game that allows you to rotate parts of the environment in real time, so morph ball puzzles were mix of creating the right path as well as navigating.

I'd love to see the X-Ray visor and scanning use the controller, holding it up to the screen to 'see through' objects.

Also, if they wanted to capitalise on ship usage like they did in Prime 3 they could have ship paths and control tethered to the touch screen while standard controls move Samus.

Basically I want more Prime, with touch screen/Wii U gimmicks for awesomeness. 2D HD Metroid would be a god send, but I dont like thinking about it because it will never happen. Imagine 2D Metroid withy hand painted art. Oh. Oh god.

Wouldn't you prefer a 3D Metroid with proper controllers than a gimmick like a map or alternative view?

How's a map a gimmick? Maps have been an integral part of Metroid since early days.

@ Jarrod, you played prime a lot on the wii right? Wasn't one of the best things about it the pointer controls etc? How do you rekon they'd translate to the wii-u controller? I can't imagine it would be anywhere near as natural.

Have you played the castlevania games on the DS? Having the map there for constant reference instead of constantly pausing and selecting the map to figure out were you need to go is fucking amazingly handy. I swear it probably saves hours in the long run.

That's because the map screen is an inch away (the same distance it is on consoles) from gameplay and the DS screen is tiny which means it makes no sense to have a map on the top left corner.

By moving it to your hands you would have to stop playing and look down unless you play games looking at your controller.

Yeah they could go with the smaller, current area map on the left corner and give you the big picture on the controller. I tend to pause/stop playing when I'm looking at a map anyway, especially with Metroid games where your total game time sometimes means different endings etc.

... annnnnnyway back to the point.

I rekon a cool way would be using the controllers motion sensor and screen to do morph balls puzzles like those marble puzzles were you have to move the controller around to roll the ball....

I have no idea if that made any sense, but it did in my head.

That actually sounds rather gimmicky and annoying. I think the whole point of Kororinpa and the like was that you were tilting the stage, not moving a ball.

I guess some people would hate that, I love that shit though. I guess it wouldn't really make sense in the context of playing as Samus though.

Yeah, that's my biggest worry. I'm a huge advocate of pointer controls and couldn't imagine going back. That being said I dont see why you couldn't have both. The Wii U controller is pretty much a tablet, so you just sit it down next to you and pick it up for context sensitive moments. That might be a bit clumsy, but meh.

And I second the motion controlled ball movements. I honestly expected such puzzles in Prime 3.

True, I don't think even Retro could make a game that bad.
