The game feels like they tried "too hard" to please the Duke fans... and failed in even doing that properly. Everything about it, albeit a few short-lived moments, feels very forced to me.

When Duke3D first came out and I played it to death in both single and multiplayer, it was fresh and new. As this review points out, the "new" game feels and plays just as dated as the original. Sure, it's a franchise game and I bought it with that expectation.. but I really do have to agree with much of this review. It's not a terrible game but it certainly doesn't have the appeal that the original had in its day.

I didn't notice any extended loading times nor much in the way of sluggish framerates but
Quote:
Otherwise, it's bog standard. All you have to do is follow the route and shoot anything that moves, primarily aliens. A few interesting set-pieces definitely help the pacing, but otherwise it's run-and-gun gameplay

^^ really sums it up in a couple of sentences for me.

The "B-Movie" references and other historic references are fine and all but what it comes down to in the end is whether or not the game is appealing/engaging... does it stand on its own two feet... does it make you want to play it all the way through... and so on.

Unfortunately it all feels a little too bland.. a little too forced.. a little too "wrong" for me to really enjoy. Even the extreme level of swearing was taken to the level of "swearing for the sake of swearing" which, in my opinion, was never the true intention of the Duke franchise. If he used the F-word it was only as part of a well written catch-phrase... there's one part, near the beginning, where one of the characters swears so much in a few short sentences, dropping the F-word 2 or 3 times per sentence, that it had me cringing..

A 5 out of 10? More like a 4, worth playing only for the die hard fans of the Duke series and those who like senseless FPS games.

Edit: also, the sound. This game sounds awesome.

Yes, the sound is very good.. big booming explosions and Duke's voice is very throaty.

Also another "cool" moment about this game was when I first ran it and I looked down at my Logitech G15 Keyboard's LCD screen.. the "Duke Nukem Forever" logo was displayed there.. that was pretty cool. It automatically detects the keyboard and displays game information there. The difficulty level, the chapter name and the amount of Ego items you have collected in that level are the memorable things from the display.

For example:

I'm a little disappointed with myself to be honest, maybe I should have knocked it down to a 4.5, but the words speak for themselves. 2011 has been the year of shit games, for me anyway, and I'm finding it increasingly difficult to write good reviews on bad games. Quantum Theory was the start of all this.

There's only so much that I can say about Duke. It's so disappointing and my brain only has so many negative adjectives to describe it. I think if you want a really basic shooter, then Duke fits into the five category. But I'll agree with most of you, the humour is the only redeeming feature.

For me, Brink is still the worst FPS of the year simply because it's unplayable and horribly designed. The latter also applies to Duke, but I was at least able to finish it. Can't say the same about Brink.

Play this game for the lols and if you have nothing else to do. Otherwise avoid it. Plain and simple really.

Ya know I actually dissagree with the review and have been having a blast playing the game. But this is still fucking low
Duke PR team threatens to punish people who give bad reviews

Do you guys actually receive review copies though? I could be wrong but I'm under the impression that you guys buy copies of your games?

Its a mix. We each buy plenty of games ourselves and review them, but from time to time publishers will send us code to review. This is mostly truthful when a publisher wishes for an unreleased game to be reviewed, as if they didn't send us a copy there would be no other way to obtain it.

Had a very interesting conversation with a game developer at E3 regarding a similar situation to that article Benza linked... Apparently that's not going to be the last time we hear something like this... Fascinating times lie ahead.

2K kicked that PR firm out after that comment.

Ars Technica wrote:
Update: 2K Games has officially weighed in on the issue. "2K Games does not endorse the comments made by Jim Redner and we can confirm that The Redner Group no longer represents our products. We have always maintained a mutually-respectful working relationship with the press and do not condone his actions in any way."

awesome to see from 2K games.
Curious though, have you guys ever gotten dirty letters from publishers or anything after slagging a game?

Pretty much agree with this review to the letter - good work, Cian. Still enjoying the game despite the numerous flaws and dated look/feel.

2001 version would have been the right game at the right time. Even if you believe Broussard's flim flam, they could have had that game out by 2003, and it would still have been groundbreaking.

It comes with the territory, but they usually come from people who are new to video game PR and trying too hard to control the flow of information. Generally you won't hear complaints from people who've been doing PR for a while unless it's obvious that you didn't play the game or overlooked a major component of the game.

Just went and read the ArsTechnica review and it's bad also but is inline with my thoughts and feelings a little more but it also made me think this:

If Duke Nukem 3D was released, for the first time, like Duke Nukem Forever I would have disliked it just as much.

And that whole "1993 vs 2010 map design" picture they have (which they pointed out was used for Doom vs modern day shooters) is definitely how I also feel about the DNF level design. The level design in DN-3D was so good that I even vividly remember some parts of it, especially the hard to get to hidden/secret areas.

Another comment that ArsTechnica made was, ""This is an execution of 3D Realms' design," said Steve Gibson, the VP of Marketing for Gearbox, when I first played the game. "We didn't redesign the game at all. We took their concept, their design, and their ideas, and we finished them. We polished them and executed on them.""

But it seems like they got the "original" and "unrefined" design.. the one that was too over the top, the one that was beyond crass.. the one that was too cringe-worthy.. the one that wouldn't sell well.. the "brainstorming" sessions' outputs cobbled together for "ideas"...

Again, if 3D Realms had released this game back in the 90's, it would've not been the huge hit it was today.

Im liking it but I am playing it just as a mindless shooter that gives me a break from story rich and sports games ive been playing lately.

I only play a little bit here and there but overall I dont mind it at all. Duke3d was a game I played heaps when I was younger MP & SP and just being able to play Duke again is fun in itself. Ihave grown up and dont find alot of the "humor" funny like teenager me did but hey it is like a trip down memory lane so its not all bad.

Id stick with the 5 score.
