Nintendo President and CEO Saruto Iwata today unveiled Super Mario 3DS for the first time.

"Since 1996, when Mario appeared in 3D in Super Mario 64, it's always been hard for players to judge how to jump and hit a block floating in a 3D space," Iwata said. "Miyamoto said to me, 'Finally the day has come when we can solve this.'"

Super Mario 3DS is under development by the Super Mario Galaxy team. A tail can been seen on the game's temporary logo, perhaps taking a cue from Super Mario Bros. 3, which may see Mario return with the famed Tanooki suit.

Nintendo is planning to reveal more about Super Mario 3DS at E3 2011 this coming June.

The tail kinda makes me hope this is some sort of 3d version of Mario 3, which is my all-time favourite Mario game

That would be pretty cool actually. Go on Nintendo, do it! icon_smile.gif

Galaxy team makes me happy. I firmly believe SMG2 is the best 3D platformer ever made, no exceptions. This will be great.

Bought 3 paper marios over the years, I just can't get into them. I don't know what it is. I love Mario and RPGs.

Paper Mario? who mentioned Paper Mario? :/

The logo is nice and all, but if its temporary, I wonder does that mean the tail will be removed and other subtitles added and be a completely different direction than we might be thinking...

The tail definitely means something. Iwata pointed it out at GDC and said more would be explained at E3.

Oh sorry, I had a few last night....

Yes, Mario 3DS will be fantastic. I cannot wait for that title if it's going to be a Mario 3 flavoured SGM, which all reports are pointing too.

New trailer from E3! I'm not seeing any Tanooki based flying/gliding though... at least it's there I suppose, but it'd be a shame if it was only implemented in some limited capacity. It's my favourite Mario power-up of all time.

Yeah, including the tanooki suit and not allowing flight is a massive mistake. One of the many reasons why 2D Mario games will always be better.

the want for this game is immense. It definitely has the super Mario64 feel to it.

Could the Tanooki suit even fly? It's been a while since I played Mario 3. I remember the Raccoon suit had flying capabilities and the Tanooki suit allowed you to turn to stone.

From what I remember, and this is really stretching the limits of my memory from when I was little so I could be wrong, the Tanooki Suit was an upgraded form of the Raccon Suit adding the ability to turn into a statue to the Raccoon Suit's powers (i.e. flying)
.
Where's Jarrod, he should be able to clear this up.

Has that ever actually been an issue? I mean in games with shitty cameras yeah but that's never really been an issue in Mario?

Tanooki suit wasn't an upgrade to the Leaf powerup, it was it's own thing. Only appeared in a few places in SMB3, and didn't include the ability to fly, but you could turn into a statue at will (when on solid ground) by hitting the down button. It'd only last a few seconds, but enemies/projectiles would pass by you without inflicting damage.

Anyway, that looks utterly fucking Baws. Seriously, as in the tail wasn't enough of a throwback to SMB3, they also have those madcore looking jets on the flying ships. Nostalgia, Hooooooooo!

Tanooki suit could fly just like the leaf. Ya'll need to refresh your SMB3.

Anyway, this game looks fucking amazing. Just fucking amazing. It reminds me of Nintendo's brilliance with SMG2. Platforming, platforming, platforming. No nonsense platforming. Awesome.

Day 0.

I actually thought it looked nowhere near as grand as Galaxy, although watching it again, it might have just been the music choice.
Bowser looked pretty rad.

I dunno, something seemed off about the trailer, not sure what though. Maybe the environments looked a little bland, or the jumping a bit odd, but something about it just isn't grabbing me as much as most Mario games :\

Either way, I'm sure it'll be amazing, and just another reason to buy a 3DS sometime soon.

What generally throws me off when watching the trailer is the fact that in certain parts, it looks as if the level is 'closed in', when we are used to the grand scale that you get Galaxy, and Mario's other 3d games, to an extent.
