Just like to point out about your SSDs since one computer I helped built had this problem that could cause a lot of headaches by knowing this in advance, it may have Sleep/Hibernate mode issue. This plagues quite a fair few SSD. More info Ask Ars: Do solid-state drives cause problems with sleep mode?

I'm not a benchmarker so I can't tell you if these parts are value for money.

Very good build. Same CPU, Mobo and GPU here and can vouch for the Mobo, very easy to OC on and very stable.

Make sure your case allows a snug fit for the 6990, the card is insanely big.

Have you considered the Z68 chipset instead?

not really, got no idea what the difference is tbh icon_razz.gif

what would you recommend for cpu cooling, so many different ones i cant choose but i would like it to be really quiet, and also someone on another forum mentioned some problems with the PSU build quality so not sure on that one.

For PSU, Corsair AX1200 is very good. Most of their stuff is great, I'm running the 1200 atm.

As for cooling, I'm running stock cooling and have no problems at all. Unless you're going heavy OC'ing, you won't need any heatsinks. Otherwise I wouldn't be too sure.

Great build.

AX1200 is one of the best power supplies you can buy but it isn't cheap at around $370. Are you going to SLI your 6990 later on because 1200W is overkill for that set up? I'd recommend the Antec TruePower 750W for $140 or the Silverstone Strider 750W for $150. Both are adequete to power a 6990 and overclocked components.

For a CPU cooler the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+. It's dead silent compared to stock and will drop your CPU temperature by at least 10 degrees. It's pretty cheap at around $30.

This is what ive decided on, got the same PSU in the end, the cooler had some good reviews so just went with it and got a cheaper ssd, so all up it came to around $2200.

You could get a high performance air cooler for the same price as that H20. The Noctua D14 for example cools better than the Corsair H70.

Where are you getting the parts from, out of interest? Wouldn't mind checking out prices - I'm keen to get a new rig in the next month, but I'm trying to spend no more than ~$1800 if possible (less would be rad too).

Ditching SSD and maybe taking a slightly less mammoth GPU should get me there, jah?

Definitely. The ONLY reason you'd get SLI/CFX based GPU setups is if you're running extreme resolutions such as Eyefinity and A13x's 2560x1600 res. If you're going 1080p, A single 580 or 6970 will be more than enough granted that you have the CPU backing it up well. So yeah, forget about any SLI/CFX lest you're really keen on e-peen frames at 1080.

Denny is right. I have a fairly modest set up with an AMD 965 and 6950 and it runs every game great at 1080p. You could do a similar build like mine for under $1000.

I think my days of PC based e-peen stroking is well over - totally cannot be having with that kind of time and money investment (unless it's for going out...).

Cheers man.

Hokay, bumping and stealing the thread for an opinion on this system (and price).

Although I'd be looking at upgrading the RAM to 8GB Kingston, the optical drive to the LG BD, and the GPU to the HD6970 2GB -- which brings it to $1,543.00

Just wondering, is that a decent gaming rig (not looking to push limits, just work well), will the 650W PSU handle it (I'd be adding in my old X-fi soundcard to the mix, fuck that onboard business), and how's the price?

Thankee.

^ Looks pretty good to me. You also need an operating system too right? So Win7 +$100

I'm wary of video cards that come factory overclocked. I've had two of different models and returned both as they had weird artifacts while playing games. Your luck might be better though.

I priced up something similar at my favourite local store and it was within $100, but I couldn't find the same case so that may be the variance.

Onboard sound is pretty good these days but then I'm not sure how good the X-Fi is. Nor am I an audiophile like you seem to be (tube amp!)

Actually, my current GPUs are factory overclock jobbies and have been the quickest to die and flakiest I've owned yet... shit. Thanks, didn't even think of that.

Already have legit Vista + Win 7 upgrade though, and am willing to sit through that lengthy and painful procedure rather than spend the money on Win 7 standard.

Yeah go non-OC editions. I've never been confident with OC cards personally.

System seems pretty good to go. That'll run pretty much anything perfectly fine at 1080p.

But just to be safe, add 3 more 6970s in there for Quadfire.

Win7 is slightly different. The Upgrade Disc actually contains all versions of Win7. In fact, all the different Win7 discs are similar. It is just they key that dictates which version you are able to install.

That said, you can actually install from the Win7 disc, w/o having to install Vista first.

Not that I'm trying sound like an old person, but have you looked at Z68 chipset? I know for gaming rigs, P67 is the one to go and Z68 little additions may not be much. However, if one encodes videos a lot, Z68 is rather handy.

I'm honestly trying not to start looking into hardware, as past experience suggests that will lead me to spend the next month odd reading up on all the current+upcoming hardware and trying to build a customised bastard of a rig. Which I will then try to build myself. During that time I'll not set it up correctly 'cause I'm an ass and then remember why I decided to get it store assembled next time.

I'm treading a fine line between 'the less I know, the better' and 'want to have something good'.

So, basically, I don't know a damned thing about current hardware - hence the dreadful questioning.

Edit: You can't install Win7 directly without installing Vista first when you've only got an upgrade key though, yeah? If you can and I just did it well wrong last time, I'd like to know... to save future hassle and embarrassment icon_wink.gif

You've got a good spec bunch of components there. I'm sure it'll last you many years of happy PC gaming. So you've really got the best of both worlds icon_wink.gif

Also, if you're willing to shop around but still worried about fiddly bits, you can always have the built PC only include the case, psu, mobo and CPU.

Installing RAM and the GPU is literally a plug-and-play effort. Zero effort required and near impossible to screw up.

Unless you try and use glue.

Karai's build:

i7 2600k - Excellent CPU but you could save a bit by getting an i5 2500k. The i5 is more than enough for a gaming rig and overclocks well.

Corsair 2x2GB - Kingston is a tad cheaper at about $45 for a 2X2GB 1333MHz kit. Otherwise it's fine.

1TB WD Black - The best 7200rpm drive you can buy so that's fine.

Antec Dark Fleet - Personal preference really. The Lian Li K6x range and CoolerMaster 690 II Advanced are regarded as the best mid range cases out at the moment.

6850 - It's a mid range card so I'd expect around medium-ish settings at 1080p with current games like The Witcher 2. It might be cutting it short for games like BF3 though. I'd personally go for the 6950 1GB which is around $240. It's a good bang for the buck high end video card.

Corsair HX650 - Excellent PSU. I'd go a 750W PSU for possible future crossfire. The Antec TP-750 is a good value quality PSU at $140.

I'd also put in an SSD if you can afford it. Price wise, it's not bad. You could build a gaming rig with an AMD CPU and GPU for under $1000.

Yes you can do a clean install with the upgrade key/disc.

Just use the win7 disc like how you would with the vista. The only step you need to do is during the installation process, there is an option to activate windows when online. You have to de-select that option and manually activate win7 after the installation is completed.
