unseen academicals by terry pratchett. I think its quite a good return to form for terry, some of his latest books have gone beyond surreal and have become a bit of too much hard work to get through, this one is easier to get through and is another fantastic wizard based novel.

Beyond surreal? I thought a few of them were a little too mundane, basically being revisionist history (plus wizards and monsters) from the industrial revolution era.

Not that I didn't like them. I'm a huge Discworld fan.

i found some of the books he was writing around the time he released science of the discworld and was dabbling more in quantum physics, to be clever books, but just a but tougher to get through and i think became a bit less amusing because they were trying to be clever.

books like thief of time, hogfather, night watch, while being great books, just got a bit too much on the technical side for me as opposed to the simpler concepts of stuff like soul music, moving pictures and men at arms.

im a massive fan also i think it is the only thing that rivals my final fantasy collection, i have every discworld novel except a couple of recent ones, the science, short stories, games on pc & ps1, all the maps, the cd, the board game and met the guy a few times and what a great guy he is. it will be a shame when he cant write anymore.

*gasp* I am actually reading a proper book. That must mean the world is ending soon or pigs have learned to fly.

Anyway I'm reading The Hardcore Diaries by Mick Foley.

It's a surpisingly funny book.

Right, I thought you said his latest books, not those 15 years old now. I quite like the technical stuff, I really enjoyed the Science books. Each to his own but yes Terry is a great author and downright nice guy icon_wink.gif

Just about finished Hells Angels (Hunter S. Thompson) on my second pass at it, after picking it up and then putting it down for something else a while back.

Glad that I found this again and stuck with it, the subject matter is fascinating and Hunter peppers it with his offbeat wit and trademark gonzo flair.

I'm reading these two beastly books.

American Tabloid is my first experience with James Ellroy and thus far (357p in) I've really enjoyed the ride. The story is interesting enough on its own, but the style of his prose makes the experience much more enjoyable.

Gonzo Papers is really three books in one. It contains the Great Shark Hunt, Generation of Swine and Songs of the Doomed which are all collections of his non-fiction works written for various magazines and newspapers. The subject matter is dated, but Hunter's gonzo style of writing is amazing.

i've been meaning to read that one. i read fear and loathing a long time ago and found it to be exactly like the movie, or.. the other way round.

the narration of the film was almost just a word for word reading of the novel.

They stuck quite close to the source material with the film, thankfully, although there were some key differences.

But yeah, you should totally pick up Hells Angels if you're interested - it's a worthy read.

Ellroy is the author of one of my all-time favourite books. ''My Dark Places". I could not recommend that highly enough to anyone interested in branching out away from standard crime writing.

im about 91% through unseen academicals with the name of the wind by patrick rothfuss next, but beyond that, there are so many damn good books to bit through.

its been over a month since the kindle arrived in my hot little hands and it is still almost 50% battery power since my firat charge when i got it! that thing is amazing!

Damn good book. Really enjoyed reading it. It probably could have ended a chapter or two sooner, but they set it up for the next book I guess.

I should hurry up and order that one. I think I might put Rothfuss up there with my favourites like Feist, Pratchett and GRRM icon_wink.gif

im currently sitting at 70% of the way through the name of the wind. the book is an amazing read. its very easy to digest like harry potter books, but the content is aimed at an older audience. i'd liken the way the story grips me to watching the shield or sons of anarchy, but in a slightly more medieval/fantasy context. although there is very little fantasy involved in it at all and more the regular lifestyle of the main character.

truly a great read.

I'm reading The Cold Six Thousand by James Ellroy. It's the second in a trilogy, American Tabloid being the first. I loved American Tabloid, and although I'm enjoying this one I think he's taken the prose style a bit too far. Some chapters feel like a parody of Ellroy's style. The storyline is, as it was with American Tabloid, the most engaging. This one starts after JFK has been assassinated and it deals with the fallout briefly and now I'm up to the part where Howard Hughes is trying to buy up Las Vegas while the Mob scheme to pinch millions from him.

I'm up to the Fourth Bear in my progress reading through all of Jasper Ffordes novels. Just finished The Big Over Easy.

Big over easy was fantastic, the first in the nursery crime series that is basically detective stories based around nursery rhymes (Big over Easy was about if humpty dumpty fell off the wall, who pushed him?)

I love that it's basically a detective story but he goes out of his way to subvert the typical detective story tropes (The main detective is happily married with 5 kids etc)
