I'm no expert. But with only one minute I think you did very well. As a poker player you got my attention with the whole "I Win" scenario. _________________

Yeah I liked that a lot too Taco, can't think of anything as to how to improve the clip. But yeah for one minutes worth that told a good story

Went and saw the new Pirates movie. It was OK. I thought it was on par with the last two, the first is still much better, though. If you've seen the others, you pretty much know what you're going to get here.

One thing I suggest, is that the most popular poker game these days is texas holdem. Maybe people would enjoy the poker part better this way. Maybe he holds 2 aces and the reaper has something less at the end of the draw.
Even better. He has a crap hand but the draw gives him a full house. _________________

I really enjoyed it Taco, worked well. I think the five card stud game lends itself to the necessary shortness of the story. The only thing I'd wonder is if there was a way of implying the dying person forced those cards to be dealt.
I don't know how that could be done to keep it within the time frame but it would help bring it back to the title if he actually does "cheat" Death so to speak.

Saw a couple of movies over the weekend.
Pirates of the Carrabian
Pretty good, better than the last two not as good as the first. Ditching Bloom and Nightley was a great move cause holy fuck they were boring. I liked the new characters, but it's starting to feel like they're just going through the motions.
Hellraiser
I'd only seen the third one (I think it was the third one) years and years ago when I was little. So I wasn't quiet sure what to expect. I knew the basic concept of Cenobites and the puzzle box etc but not what the movie had in store. The first half of the movie felt like an episode of Buffy. (Not saying that as a negative I love buffy) I could just imagine the characters of buffy investigating the mysterious deaths and finding them rebuilding the guy. Really enjoyed the movie though. My only complaint was the what the shit at the ending.
| Quote: | | When they try to destroy the box, then the weird hobo grabs it out of the fire, catches on fire and turns into a dragon and flys away? |
I mean all the other weird shit in the movie falls easily into line with weird shit from the cenobite's dimension but that.... what the fuck?
Easy A
Really enjoyed it. Not really much to say on it though just a typical teen comedy. Really highlighted the fact that the last decade had pretty much no teen commedies. I mean the 80's had John Hughs, the 90's had American Pie, Clueless, 10 Things I hate about you etc etc. But the 00's? Man they had shit all. Still Easy A was great. _________________

the engineer is that thing that runs down the walls at her earlier (he is supposed to make all the torture devices).....it's all speculation really and what i think really happened was that they wanted the typical horror ending as that is not how hellraiser was to end originally.
As you may have noticed they ran out of money at the end, i think barker and someone else sat down and hand drew all those frames of crap at the end with the cenobites
(this is why i love horror, always a story as to why they couldn't do, or did do something the way they did) _________________ kill, kill, kill.....the white man. Kill the white man, kill

ah ok, I thought that thing on the walls was just another cenobite.
Other than that though I loved the movie. It was really different to what I expected but still really enjoyed it. I've heard say that the second movie is the best though so I'm gonna have to track that down. I wanna get atleast the first three though after that they're supposed to turn to shit.
Yeah I was just reading IMDB and it mentioned him and his mate did the entire ending scene by themselves and that Barker was pretty proud of it considering how drunk they were. _________________

Haha... wow
That's never a good sign.
Also forgot to mention, the special effects for frank reforming and his progression to being human again were really pretty amazing. The first claymation scene of his body reforming was fucking great. The make up of him without skin with all the muscles and shit was pretty fucking amazing too. _________________

Battle: Los Angeles
Yeah, you know, pretty much as expected. Looked pretty nice in HD, some pretty cool aliens and it was almost all believable. Took itself a little bit too seriously. Loved watching humans get slaughtered... needed more of that.

Saw the new Pirates on the weekend. People give heaps of shit to the series, but I love them mainly for Captain Jack Sparrow. He makes the movie and you can't deny it. Watching him get up to more shenanigans is never a bad thing.
Also, halfway through a Lord of the Rings marathon. I can watch this trilogy all the way through any time I want. Love it to bigs. Made me decide I need a Balrog statue in my life. _________________ GT: chunged

^ +'ed for LOTR love and the use of "shenanigans".
I saw Insidious the other night. I actually really dug it. It was great to see a good old fashioned ghost story. Had a few great scares too. Got a little hokey towards the end, but I had fun. _________________

The Social Network
Was exactly as I expected it. Well shot, paced and all round directed by Fincher, who seems to do no wrong. The guy really knows how to get in touch with the subject matter and craft a film that seems the perfect fit. Really no offenses on a technical level.
But I didn't really care for it. I went in with a clean slate, but the kind of movie it is just isn't for me. These 'super smart teenager/young adult against the odds' scenarios are right up there with 'coming of age' dramas on my hate list. I find them nauseating, boring, and littered with dislikable characters. Kind of like the huge wrap Almost Famous gets, I really dont have any interest in watching a young person move up the chain, show the oldies who's boss, or come of age through experience. It's a mundane and largely uninteresting subject to me, and for that reason I dont really have any fond memories of this particular movie.
While Fincher did an amazing job as always, it's far from my favourite work of his. Zodiac and Fight Club still stand far above it.
In terms of films released in 2010, I certainly dont agree with the acclaim it got at the Golden Globes. Of the films released in 2010, I felt the likes of Black Swan was superior on every front, while it was no better than Inception. The praise surrounding it reminds me of The Hurt Locker; a film that I enjoy, yet leaves no real lingering impact. Black Swan will forever be my film of 2010 for sure.
Oh, and as a side note, I loath this trend in cinema where the portrayal of quirky intellectuals amounts to little more than ITALKREALFASTANDIMTOTHEPOINT. It's like Hollywood writers are convinced that they only way they can have a person come across as intelligent is to have them shoot shit as fast as possible.
EDIT: I see nobody has seen the best film Australia has produced in yonks, likely because pansy arse cinemas refuse to show it due to all the controversy. Please people, if you see Snowtown screening somewhere go see it. If you support one Australian film this year, make it this one. I guarantee you wont easily forget it. Read my review and get hype! _________________

Social Network was an ok film, but I just didn't like the subject material. Guy spends entire film trying to impress a girl in which we saw for 5 minutes?
Hurt Locker; no impact? I really liked that film and it has stuck with me since I watched it.

I think it is iirc, i think it had a lot to do with walter hill coming in and going get away from that script, none of you know how to write a script, and then basically made it a remake of the first....
The handling of the newt and hicks things was a disgrace.
I do remember going, wow this is the movie they should have made _________________ kill, kill, kill.....the white man. Kill the white man, kill

Jarrod, I completely agree about The Hurt Locker. A film about a Explosive Ordnance Disposal team? Walk up to bomb, disarm bomb, walk away from bomb. Repeat for whole film. I was bored to death.

I remember I've seen The Hurt Locker. yet can't remember anything about it. There was a scene of him dissarming a bomb in some arab city. Then another scene at night with fire behind them.
That's it, that's my entire recollection of the movie.
And even the night time scene I think I might be thinking of Battle for LA. _________________
