Anybody else playing this at the moment?

Basically, it's a 2D version of minecraft but with a few extras such as bosses, magic and whatnot. Came out on steam the other day for $10, well worth it.

It's great. Very very addictive, I've been playing it a LOT since I bought it a couple days ago. It does take a fair few ideas from Minecraft, though the RPG elements (armour crafting/bosses/NPC's/currency etc) is really the icing for it. While minecraft is kind of 'make your own' fun, this has more of a direction as to what you're supposed to do.

It's worth every penny and then some.

Can you build little fortresses and what not? What about elaborate machines and what not like in minecraft?

In other news, I got my first goblin invasion. Little bastards were everywhere.

A look to the future of Terraria.

Redigit wrote:
Progression has been pretty slow over the last week. I've actually been in the middle of moving. I put an offer on a house before the first trailer went public, and got the keys to it the day before Terraria was released. (Great timing, huh?)

I just finally got my workspace set up at the new place, so I should be able to get back to the grind early next week. But enough about that, let's talk about the future of Terraria.

My immediate focus for the game will be patching up the remaining bugs, implementing Steam features, and of course working on multiplayer to make it more secure and accessible. Multiplayer is a bit of a mess right now, and a dedicated server with no graphics card requirements is very much needed. Content progression will be slow for the next few weeks until we get all of the necessities taken care of. Though, we will be adding a few new things here and there to keep you interested.

In the long term, we will not just be adding content, but new mechanics as well. Some of the ideas the we have been playing around with are:

Pure PvP servers with team based objectives. Worlds will be generated before every match. Imagine a CTF server where towers are automatically created on either side of the map. Players can fight it out on the surface, or try to tunnel into the other tower.

Adding sloped/inclined tiles to make the world smoother.

New harder world types to continue game progression (Ex: Alien plants, alternate dimensions, evil worlds, etc.)

Enemy factions that will move into your world, and build their own city. You can slaughter them while they are weak, or let them build up their strength to get better rewards.

More events: Volcanoes, earthquakes, more/improved invasions, etc..

    Weather: Seasons, snow, floods, etc..

Farming, and stamina system that gives a bonus to player stats.

Mechanics for making traps and devices.

Terraria has endless possibilities, and there is still a lot more that we want to do with it. In the meantime, please be patient while we get the last few kinks worked out.

I'm pretty psyched about the enemy faction part.

Finally got to play this with my friend, played 7 or so hours over the past two nights. So good, even better than Minecraft (though the two aren't really the same). There's just so much more content and things to do, it's going to take forever to get good gear though.

Count me in!

I've been looking for a bunch of people to play multiplayer with, I'm feeling a little lonely even with my decked out NPC hotel in SP icon_smile.gif

Actually, I've been playing for about 5 or so hours, so it's not THAT decked out yet. I'm *really* surprised by just how much depth there is to this game (pun not intended, but oh-so-appropriate).

So how does multiplayer on this work anyway? Sinth sets up a server and we connect to it with Hamachi? Doesn't need to be dedicated does it? I know minecraft was a pain just to get a game going with a couple of mates.

Any takers on hosting a terraria server for us?
I'd be happy to, but I doubt my laptop could bear the load requirements (or the fact it's yanked out of action as I carry it to work each day).

I mean, I'd be happy to do it; I've set up a Hamachi network already, but I probably won't be able to 24/7 it, just use the 'host & play' function. I'm not sure how to set up a ded server, so if anyone can school my stupid ass, I'd create one.

Also, sorry for my late response Windburn & Co, I haven't been PALGNing much lately. PM me if you're still interested and want a swifter reply...

Could someone sort of basically explain how this game works? I really wanna get into it but all I seem to do for hours is dig... dig some more... then get killed by a worm or bat or four eyes that come out of nowhere or some jellies that gang up on me. Am I missing something?

You just dig to find ore/items etc, then create better weapons, armour and items, summon bosses, when you're good enough you can attempt to do a dungeon, you could search for floating islands etc. There's a lot of things to make and look for, and when you're good enough you can go to the Hell type place to find even better equipment. I guess you have to like that kind of gameplay to enjoy it though.

It has a fairly steep entry requirement of a couple of hours of quasi-tedium, whereby you are essentially just 'setting yourself up' and overall just getting your bearings...and mining towards the essentials like a decent gold sword, a hookshot and working out how to unlock and build houses for the NPCs.

Then you'll slowly start peeling back the many layers of the game (literally), and get really sucked in. There are so many different environs in Terraria, far more than minecraft has. Just wait till you see the dungeon icon_smile.gif It also is one of those games where a little 'cheating' isn't remiss, in the form of checking out the Terraria Wikia for directions and short-term goals.

I just beat my first boss monster after working out how to summon him...and it was bloody intense. Saw a meteor hit the ground too, and after mining that I have a bunch of really cool weapons....I guess it's alot about loot-whoring which enables you to explore further down in the more dangerous areas.

And like minecraft, all of this is that much more fun over Vent with some buddies to play with.
