It's about gaming but it's not in the gaming thread?
In fact I may move it there shortly.

Hey Esposch, Fuck your rules!
4x4 FTW!
ok, so maybe this is spoiling it for everyone, but following on from the discussion yesterday I remembered some other great games and decided to remake my grid. In doing this I couldn't decide which to keep and which to cull... so here we are.
Just so you know (I'm looking at you Theory) these games are all picked cos:
a) I loved them and played them to heck (goldeneye, mario kart, COD4, C&C, quake)
b) They had an amazing WOW factor (duck hunt, doom, portal, braid, HL, MK)
c) They introduced my to a concept/genre (UT)
Some of these games I have pumped weeks into, others I've had maybe one play through, but they all have a special place in my gaming history.
Edit: I'd just like to point out that the quake pic does not display good tactics. Shamblers are partially immune to explosives, so the grenade launcher is not the best choice of weapon (fking n00b). A better choice would be the super nail-gun or Thunderbolt (ammo permitting). _________________ Da Bessssss

Trufax. The rocket damage code checks for Shamblers and reduces the damage by half; and the splash damage code also checks for Shamblers and reduces that damage by half. The grenade does not do contact damage, it only does splash damage. The rocket does contact damage, but doesn't let splash damage effect the Shambler if it's been hit. This is something I didn't realise until I loaded up the code for it some years ago.
That shot does look like one of the old publicity shots though. So it's probably John Romero or someone being a noob. _________________

MK1 over MK2? Because it introduced you to a concept or what? Please explain.

Honestly I'm still amazed some people rank Goldeneye over it, PD was better in literally every single way. |
Nearly every single way.
The 64 couldn't handle PD and at times the game could lag up something chronic. Goldeneye didn't have those issues (my memory could be failing me but at least not to THAT extent).
If it was up to me, I'd probably put Goldeneye before PD on my list not because it's a better game (it isn't) but it was one of the few games I got to play with my dad. _________________

I tried to go back and play Perfect Dark on the N64 the way I used to do with mates; two player with maximum bots on Dark difficulty. I cant believe I ever did it. I'm pretty sure the framerate is in single digits.
And that's why emulators are awesome . _________________

Mine:
Most of these games I have played for countless hours, a couple of them are included just due to the sheer enjoyment and immersion I had with them. A few of them are a part of a series, and in those cases I have generally enjoyed a number of games in the series and this also adds to the reason they were included.
A quick summary (and giving them some kind of order, it's so hard to pick them let alone pick a single favourite...):
1 - Super Mario Bros. 3: I have played through this game time and time again, most recently within the last, say 12-18 months. The first SMB really got me into gaming, way back in about 1990, but this really took the concept and platformers to a new level. I have played through this on any number of systems, NES, SNES, Gameboy Advance, DS and probly even Wii. I think this is the greatest platformer (2D and 3D) of all time! Massive amounts of replayibility and still holds up to this day.
2 - Final Fantasy 10: This was my first introduction to the JRPG, and I loved every minute of it. The story, the characters, the battle system... I think I recall having about 5 different saves for this game totalling about 300 hours.
3 - Tetris: This was my first portable gaming experience on the original Gameboy. I remember playing this when the family would go on road trips, and generally being able to get to around 130 line before things got out of control. Have played this through a number of systems and iterations also, the most recent of which being Tetris DS. I have one mate in particular who thinks he's a gun and just love handing his ass to him time and time again... Special mention here to Tetrisphere also, completely different to most games in the series but I loved this and put huge amounts of time into it.
4 - Diablo 2: I probably hold both of the Diablo games in around about the same regard, but I guess 2 pips the first due to the features and different scenery for me. I loved playing this coop with some mates back in the day. Still play both of these to this day from time to time, especially with D3 on the horizon, can't wait!
5 - Perfect Dark: Was never really big into FPS' but I enjoyed Goldeneye, so picked this up on release. Absolutely loved this from word go, from SP, to Coop story, to Multiplayer. Me and my mates used to spend countless hours playing 4 player multi...
6 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: This was the first game that really, and I mean really, immersed me in the game world. You almost thought you were Link playing through this. The puzzles, the battle system, the story and the sheer size of the world were all something I'd never before experienced and loved every minute of it. Have enjoyed many other Zelda's in the series but never as much as this.
7 - Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec: Not too much to say here other than this has to be in there due to the amount of time spent. From memory I got pretty damn close to 100% on this, and enjoyed all of it. Really loved the car collection, the racing and the sense of achievement as each race was completed. Also loved the customisation, I don't know how many times I tweaked the Escudo (and various others) to try and see what max speed I could get, 1/4 mile times etc.
8 - Guitar Hero 2: Again, have played most of the games in the series and the newer ones are better due to the song list and increased quality. Included this one though as it is where I began playing. GH is just pure fun. Don't play so much know, but have been known to rock out late Friday night when I'm half drunk (or fully...).
9 - The Witcher: This is probably the only game on the list that I haven't yet sunk heaps of hours into or completed countless playthroughs, nor for that matter have I even finished it. I have included this on the list for the pure immersiveness of the game. As I said with OoT, it really makes you fell like your in the world, you get to know the characters and the history of the place. I also really enjoy the battle system and the alchemy aspects, but it's the story and immersion that makes this game great. Hopefully 2 can live up to this. Also, I think this or number 2 will make it further up this list the more I play them.
As you can see, not too many new games on the list but I have tried to keep them across my entire history of gaming. My favourite systems are N64, PS2 and PC, as such, this is where the majority of the games come from. _________________ Now Playing: Borderlands, HOMM5, Mass Effect.

Half did this last night...
wow, this was tough. I decided to go the chronological gaming mosaic. There are so many games I wanted to include, narrowing it down to 9 is like taking a photo of myself and reducing it from 256 colours down to 9 base colours. Provides a very simplistic idea of who I am as a gamer.
Demon Attack
This and, I think it was called Voltair (was a side-scrolling shooter) were the first games I played for free, on my uncle's whizz-bang, brand new apple computer thing back in the early 80's. They always had cool stuff before my parents. I swam in a backyard pool for the first time over there too, and also watched my first VHS video (Game of Death).
Virtua Fighter
I first played Virtua Fighter in an arcade. Along with Daytona and Sega Rally. These 3 games had me hooked for a while. I've visited arcades occasionally over the years since then, but I've never really reached the same level of wonder and excitement that I felt in those early days when the 3D stuff first took off.
Sonic 2
My brother-in-law already had a SNES, so for my first console, I decided to get a Megadrive. Sonic 2 was the standout title for me from that era, and unlike most games back then, I actually finished it. Honourable mentions go to Kid Chameleon, Super Mario All-Stars, Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter 2, Mario Kart and Bubsy. I never got into the SNES RPG's until later on.
Goldeneye 64
This snapshot represents the birth of the FPS for me.
I got my first proper taste of the FPS genre with the Nintendo 64. It started with Turok, then Doom 64, Quake 64... with those games and this new genre, I had found gaming nirvana. And then Goldeneye 64 lined those other games up and headshotted them all with a single bullet from a silenced pp7. It was hard to decide between Goldeneye and Doom 64. Goldeneye was the full package, had the objective-based gameplay, graphically was very 'modern' and I played the multi-player with friends for ages... but I played Doom 64 first, and from start to finish, I was totally, 100% immersed. I literally played it until my eyes could not continue. Then I'd go to bed, shut my eyes, but the game was still there and I'd still be zooming around levels, shooting demons and chainsawing pinkies.
Honorable mentions would go to Ocarina of Time and Tomb Raider.
Gran Turismo 2
I love racing games and the depth found in the Gran Turismo series was unprecedented. The handling of course was exceptional for the time also.
Tekken 3
do I need to say anything here? It's Tekken 3.
Shenmue
This game series needs to be redone in HD and finished. Maybe it'd be outclassed in this day and age, but I'm not sure if there is still anything quite like Shenmue (Yakuza series comes close in some ways).
Oblivion
This game was at it's best on PC, in conjunction with Oscuro's Overhaul mod (among other smaller tweak/graphical mods).
GTAIV
I liked the previous GTA games, but I enjoyed how Rockstar made this game a little more serious. With the new hardware they were able to improve the vehicle physics, adding weight and momentum. It's a shame about the bikes though, dunno what they were thinking there. The story this time around was excellent and the voice acting is incredible by game standards.
Borderlands is a game that could have just as easily made it into the final spot for me.

Yeah, same argument
I don't recall ever playing WC3, but I for sure loved WC2. Interestingly I also played WC1 alot, and loved it. But in this case the sequal was a significant improvment on the first (IMO of course). It just had so much funny stuff, and ships!
Obviously these are choices I have made for personal reasons, games that I clearly remember being impressed by. I don't pretent to have played every game on everyones list, and there are lots of games that I just plain missed out on.
MK1 or MK2? Warcraft 2 or Starcraft? who knows...
The only thing I'm sure on is that if you ask 3 gamers "whats the best game ever", you'll get at least 5 answers. _________________ Da Bessssss

Dude you haven't played 3? Man you need to get your arse on that. Just to play through the single player campaign of 3 and Frozen Throne at least once. I'm not even a big RTS fan but I've played through the single player campaign of those games like 3 times cause it's just a fucking great story. _________________

1. Goldeneye - awesome multiplayer fun, even on a small CRT TV
2. Doom 2 - it's Doom 2! Level 15 FTW
3. Fifa 10 - Still don't know if I like it, but I've played over 1500 online games so I guess I must
4. Half Life 2 ep 2 - Normally I don't care for storyline but this was a good un
5. Wizball - great 1 or 2 player game from back in the day on C64, super original
6. Sonic 3 - The Marble hill zone was epic. Lots of secrets in this game, especially with the magnetic shield
7. Championship Manager 2 - Still the best Soccer management game. Simple and yet complex at the same time
8. Star Control 2 - The single player game was huge and the multiplayer was very very good
9. Bubble Bobble - One of the best arcade game's released on the C64 _________________ I'd be apathetic, but I can't be arsed.

they've given up on the whole episodic content idea
http://games.on.net/article/12464/Valve_Episodic_Content_is_No_More
I rekon they should just stick to paying other people to make games for em cause there games tend to suck, but I know a lot of people won't agree with me there. _________________
