Couldn't disagree with you more.

The hours you pump into a game are not necessarily an indication of how good the game is. For example, is grinding out 40hrs in WoW the equal of playing 2hrs of 2-player Tekken Tag. The answer probably depends on who you ask, but I would say definitely not.

A great game could be great for any number of reasons. Story, graphics, characters, design, physics, multiplayer, etc etc. Anyone of these things alone can make a game good, executed well together they can make a game great.

Looking at my 3x3 they are definitly not the games I have spent the most time playing. I have only played Portal through once (it was in a single sitting too), but the idea and the execution are so good that it left a lasting impression on me. Same with Mortal Kombat, I never owned the game, only played it at friends places, but the impression it left on me huge. It became the yard stick to measure other fighting games against.

I totally see how people can have an immediate and lasting response to a game, time need not be a factor.

Me no understand how a game that was so recently released can be in your top 9 of all time? Don't they need to stand the test of time to make that kind of list? They do for me. This pertains to all "favourite of all time" lists. Movies, music etc.

This goes for Portal 2 also. Mostly because it's so short... how long could you actually play this title for? Is the replay value great enough to get 100 hours out of it? 200 hours?

I put a ridiculous amount of hours in most of the games I chose... SMB3... NES Metroid... Super Mario Kart... games like this which were played over and over and over for YEARS, not just flavour of the month. *shrug*

Thoughts? Anyone?

Yes and no.

I don't think a game has to be something you can play over and over for it to be one of your favourite games. Certainly, for some games, it could be - I noted on my list that there were games there I could, and have, played over and over again for years and years, but there are also games that are there for other reasons. Most notably, the experience I had with them. I would have played most Mario Karts for just as long as I played 'Super', but only 'Super' appeared on my list, as that specific one had a number of experiences wrapped up with it (in this case a lot of it was feelings of nostalgia, memories of the people I would play it with and the fun we would have, etc).

I don't feel, for example, that Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn't deserve its spot in my list just because I haven't replayed it much, as its inclusion in my list is due to the feelings I associate with it - honestly, playing it to me felt like I remember it feeling when I played Yoshi's Island for the first time, and, knowing how much I still love YI, I've made an assumption I will continue to love SMG2. I feel this is a more than valid reason to put it in my list.

However, I do agree with you to an extent - when it comes to a game like Portal 2, which released, what, 2 weeks ago, it could potentially be difficult to separate that post-game-honeymoon-phase from actually viewing it somewhat 'objectively'. Though, as its a list of your favourite games on a video game forum, does 'objectivity' really matter anyway?

I'm not saying they have to have played everything I like. I'm saying I don't understand how a game that came out so recently can be in someone's top 9 of all time list? Unless of course it is one of only 9 games they have ever played. Just trying to understand how other people judge favourites, is all.

For me it's hours spent, how passionate/obsessed I get about the game, and most of all if it moves me in some way emotionally.

Ikaruga as an example. It's incredibly challenging and pushed me really, really far in trying to perfect its mechanic, and when you have that moment in the game where its music, gameplay and art style flows in total unison, you're switching between the polarities perfectly and fluently streaming through a level without a hitch..it is literally like watching art to me. The entire metaphor behind spirituality throughout the levels too always hits a note. It's probably the only game where I can gladly say its gameplay mechanic is utterly flawless. The only flaw is the player.

A game to be in my top games needs to hit a very high note to remain at the top. I struggled to make my top 9 a bit because of a handful which I didn't put in there, but overall yeah, I'd say a lot of those are way up there.

EDIT: 10,000 replies after I added my thoughts. God damn you guys are fast.

FUCK!
I just realized. I didn't put a single fucking Megaman game on my 3x3? What the shit Ben you dumb cunt. It's only your single favorite series of games ever.

Jesus fuck how did I forget that.
Replaced Perfect Dark with Megman 3

Megaman 3
Man I got into the megaman games late, like only a couple of years ago when I chucked a couple on an emulator on my DS. FUCK ME they are good. It was my first introduction to real propper hair pulling hard games and I fucking loved it, perfecting everything in a level so a level that you used to not be able to get past the first screen without dying 3 times you could run the entire thing without taking a hit. I've never been able to get into the X series, they're too focused on combat rather than platforming for my taste. And shit then getting into the fandom and the music. Fucking christ The Protomen act 2 is an amazing fucking album without knowing anything about Megaman. Knowing it's a dark retelling of the pre-lude to megaman about how Dr Light and Wiley fell out from eachother is fucking incredible. The Megas are great too.
A lot of people rekon 2 is the best megaman game.
Those people are wrong. Really wrong. 3 is the perfect Megaman game for a variety of reasons.
1: The slide, first time megaman could slide and it's a great. Fuck knows what reason they got rid of it in 9 and 10. They feel really limited after playing 3-6.
2: No charge shot. Fuck the charge shot. Made the games too easy, you didn't even need to figure out what weapon you needed for the bosses just BAM CHARGE SHOT MOTHER FUCKER!
3: The music. I'm not a fan of 8 bit music but HNNNNNNGH! BEST FUCKING MUSIC!
4: MOTHER FUCKING PROTOMAN! Hardcore like a mother fucker! That whistle, that fucking scarf. The fucker is so hardcore he wears sunnies under his helmet's sunglasses That's fucking hardcore. The fact that you get like 10 seconds into the game and BAM! MOTHER FUCKING PROTOMAN IS FUCKING YOUR SHIT UP! SLIDE BITCH SLIDE! Is awesome.

Conclusion: Fuck Perfect Dark, this game is the shit and also replaces GGX2 as my fave game.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - NES - First game I recall playing and by golly did I love it. I was a huge Turtles fan in my infancy, to the point where I'd refuse to where all these designer labels (dad would bring home all sorts of really fashionable clothes for me to wear, and I'd turn them all down for Turtles shirts). Anyways, this was the water level, a level I believe I only got past once. Funny thing is, until the Angry Video Game Nerd I didn't even realise the level was timed.

King's Quest VI - PC - Another game from my infancy, King's Quest VI was an awesome adventure game that seemed really ahead of it's time and still holds up reasonably well all things considered. This section here is probably the first real puzzle you had to deal with and I think I replayed this section over and over and over again because another section relied on a manual which was useless to me at age 4 since I couldn't read.

Yoshi's Island - SNES - First ever game the family bought and boy was it a classic. The picture is of the last boss fight and boy was it intimidating with it's design and kick ass music.

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time - N64 - When gaming went 3D I was blown away by just how immersive it was. However it was Ocarina of Time that was the pinnacle to me. I actually wanted to get a picture of Saria waiting at the bridge because that's when the game really opened up for me, but I thought this picture wasn't a bad consolation. This is when the game turned everything on it's ear and really staked it's claim as one of the best of all time.

Pokemon Red/Blue - GB - I'm a kid of the 90's, of course Pokemon had to make it! Selected this photo because the image is one I'm really used to. When I was little all I ever did was raise one Pokemon until it was at an insane level and could sweep just about everything.

Final Fantasy IX - PS1 - It was between this and Monster Rancher, in the end FFIX won out because I actually completed the game. FF9 is easily my favourite FF of all time and this was the moment that really sucked me in. Watching the gang escape a forest that is basically turning itself to stone was one of the most thrilling scenes for me at the time and watching one of the characters sacrifice themselves for you was really touching for me. This was the groups reaction.

WWF No Mercy - 64 - I was always a big fighting game fan and loved the mythos of Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Tekken and even Clayfighter (for a time). However No Mercy was the pinnacle of my enjoyment for wrestling and I got a lot of value out of this game, and still do to this day.

Team Fortress 2 - PC - Probably the game I've put more hours into more than anything else. Since I'm not the best player, I thought the re-spawn screen was an accurate depiction of my experience.

Persona 3 FES - PS2 - The game I'm currently playing and really enjoying.

I would say "each to their own" regarding favourite games of all time. In my opinion a game that has great replay value should be there in the top of anyone's favourite games but sometimes it's about the feelings the game instills into the individual or a certain aspect or genre changing the way you think about games.

For me, Secret of Mana was top of the list because it was the very first game that introduced me to the world of RPGs. Before then I knew nothing about RPGs and thought they were long winded games that sucked the life ,and therefore the fun, out of you. I was a small-minded kid at the time and tended to play platformers and beat'em ups.
During my first play-time, I actually rushed through the game with my brother as we were on a tight "rent" timeline. It was only after my mum had purchased the game for me did I blow massive amounts of time into the game just to fully complete it.

The thing is, everyone has their own views of what and why a game is good and this thread by Esposch proves just that...it's a good thing too, I thought we all might be mindless zombies playing video games day in day out....icon_biggrin.gif

Crystal Caves
Growing up with a PC this was my Mario (more so than commander keen which terrified me with the wolves) this was also the first game I ever beat. Awesome game and sometimes I think I'm one of like 3 people that remember it. If I went back and played it now it probbably wouldn't hold up that well, but it takes over games like Jill of the Jungle, the original Duke Nukem, Comander Keen, Cosmos Cosmic Adventure etc just cause I managed to beat that **** (And then he started a tribble farm or something?)

Holy shit you just listed my childhood.

Back in 1995 dad came home with our first "proper" computer, a Pentium 200mHz with a 2mb video card and 16mb RAM. It came preinstalled with all the games you mentioned above. Crystal Caves was a stand out for us too, great fun back in the day. Ergo Commander Keen, Cosmo, Duke Nuken pre-3D. Another favourite was Wolfenstein 3D.

if you haven't tried it (Or didn't have it allready) see if you can find a game called Secret Agent InvivnI, it's basically the sequal to Crystal Caves (Using the same engine it plays exactly the same) Just with a dude in a tux and a james bond evil island lair theme instead of space mines.

Man, I played sooo much Secret Agent on the school computers back when I was in primary school. The school computers had a few decent DOS games on them... God Of Thunder, HUGO, Secret Agent, Street Rod (!), Ski Or Die

*Sigh* those were the days.

On the subject of older games vs. newer games, I made my list on games I found the most memorable, and games that resonated with me in a way other games do not.

Half-Life 2 Vs. Half-Life is a good example. If you were to ask me which of the two was more influential, revolutionary, and 'important' for it's time, I wouldn't hesitate to say the original Half-Life.

But even so, and even though I love the hell out of Half-Life, the sequel is the one that really hits home for me. I consider it a more enjoyable game, even if it is far less revolutionary. Half-Life 2 + Episodes is literally one of the reasons I keep playing games.

Deus Ex Vs. Bloodlines is another one. Though very different, both are open first person role playing games with shooter elements. Deus Ex is easily more revolutionary and I'd say a wholey better made game in almost all areas, but Bloodlines is a game I enjoyed more. Much like HL2, Bloodlines is one of those games I constantly go back to.

In terms of modern games, I almost listed Galaxy 2. I haven't had the chance to endlessly replay it, but that doesn't change the quality of the time I did have with it. I love platformers, and looking at all the 3D platformers I've ever played I honestly dont think anything compares to Galaxy 2. It raised the bar of quality and set a standard so high that just thinking about it makes me giddy, reminded of how much pure fun I had.

But as others have already said, making a list of nine games is really hard, as depending on my mood there's a good few others that could be switched in and out. Diablo/Diablo II, Hitman, GTA2, Perfect Dark, The Incredible Machines, Wolfenstein, Bayonetta, Duke 3D, Deus Ex, etc. Lots of titles, old and new, that represent some of the finest gaming I've done.

Oh, and I totally failed on the "middle square is your favourite" thing. Replace it with either Half-Life 2, Metroid Prime or Arcanum and we're good to go.

The selection criteria for me:

1. The impact they had on my life. Some of these games pretty muchh made me who I am today.
2. If I played them right now I would still enjoy them as much.
3. Theyre so good that no matter how much the genre may progress, they still remain that benchmark.
4. Hours spent.

Dammit, I missed on putting Outrun in my list. That game had a huge influence on my gaming. Granted it was the arcade version, but I could only stare at wonder at this big racing machine as a youngster, with graphics that were incredible for that time period and memorable music. The idea of racing cross country was also quite an achievement and also bringing choice into the equation.

It's cool seeing a lot of people post Perfect Dark. I made a super nerdy thread about it awhile ago, but I still stand by it being one of the most feature rich and technically accomplished games ever made. Multiplayer shooters today still largely fail to offer as much content as customisation as Perfect Dark did.

Honestly I'm still amazed some people rank Goldeneye over it, PD was better in literally every single way.

In order from favourite of all time:

1. Zelda A Link to the Past: This was the first Zelda game I played 15+ years ago, I always heard things about Zelda and i just thought they were idiots, boy was i proven wrong even to this day I cant get enough of this game or the series

2. Zelda Ocarina of Time: Wow! what can i say about this game!? I have played thorugh this game at least 35 times and i still get goosebumps when the Sheik reveals herself to be Zelda!.

3. Zelda TP: When i first moved in/met my partner i bought her this game and we would just lie there in bed playing this till 2 or 3 in the morning every night, Great Times! icon_smile.gif

4. Super Metroid: When i was in High school there was these 2 kids there that always use to think they were better then me, they always use to go on about this game and how fast there times were to finish the game on 100%, from memory 1 had 1hr 52 min and the other 1hr 58min, so i borrowed this game off a friend I got a time of 1hr 32min they never bragged about another game to me again

5. Resident evil 2: By far the best game of the res. evil series, this game hooked me in first time i played it

6. Assassins Creed II: As im sure you can tell im not really into the current gen games, but this game just amazed me i could not put the controller down, I even went through and got 1000/1000 on 360 for this game, its the only game i've done that on

7. Wonderboy 2: Was the first SMS game i got (other then Alex Kidd in miracle world of course), this game always had a strong hold over me even this year 2011 i bought a SMS and wonderboy 2 just so i could relive the memories

8. Battletoads (NES): This is the very first game i remember ever playing, I use to go to my friends house down the street every day after school and we would just play this game until i got kicked out for dinner time icon_smile.gif

9. Gran Turismo 2: I cant remember what i was in for but i had surgery for something, and when i got out of the hospital i was bored and my sis drove me down to Kmart and i bought this and a PSONE console, it was also the first game i bought for myself with my own money from my own bank account icon_smile.gif

On a side note I really wanted to put Zelda windwaker in this list but i left it out because i haven't finished it yet, but so far imo its the 3rd best Zelda after ALTTP and OoT

In no order (Yoshi's Island is my favourite). This list is in no way definitive. I pretty much just put them in as they came to mind and a would probably change six of them depending on when you asked me.
