When they're using the killing of Bin Laden to defend/justify the use of water boarding. I'd guess not.

Also this is interesting.

And as for the truth, with all the speculation and rumours and secrecy surrounding the operation I wouldn't be surprised if the whole, exact, unedited truth never sees the light of day.

There's some shark guy that swims with Great Whites (not Rodney Fox) and he reckons that when they don't want him swimming around anymore they warn him by smacking their nose into the camera.

After reading the thread, I feel compelled to put in my two cents:

First off, on the point of why the SEALS killed him, and why they dumped the body. My guess is that this is the most intelligent way to deal with Bin Laden. Unlike Saddam Hussein, who was largely unwanted by most of his people by the time he was found (proof of this comes with the fact that his whole regime disbanded the moment he went into hiding. While yes, most of them were killed, a fair few survived), Bin Laden still has a fairly large following in both Al Qaeda and, indirectly, the Taliban. If he were to be left alive, where would they take him? Surely not the USA, that would just invite action to be taken to get him out of there. They don't have any need to question the man either, nor would they get any answers from him. He lived on the basis that he was doing "God's will". The other thing to note is the fact that his death tells his followers that he is no longer protected by the "hand of God" as he claimed he was when he managed to stay hidden for more than a decade. It's probably important to note that his followers may perceive this as the opposite, rather seeing this as the Americans acting against God's will and further giving them a reason to fight, but I'd rather not go into that.

In terms of dumping the body in the ocean, whilst convenient, there's no denying that Islamic custom requires that he be buried in some way, shape or form before sunset of the day he died. On a deeper level though, it must be remembered, who would dare take his body, and place it in their nation? If it was the USA, it would be defecated on a daily basis, and would only harm the western image from a middle-easterner point of view. The same would stand for most western nations. Conversely, if it were to be kept in a place that insurgents could have access to, like his homeland of Afghanistan or somewhere similar, it would be turned into a shrine, and a symbol of the Al Qaeda mission.

Finally, it's also important to note that whilst Al Qaeda generally wants the world to be dominated by Islam, the Taliban just want the Americans to get off their land. If the Allied Forces were to pull out, I'd hedge bets that the situation their would be resolved among the people themselves.

So that's the end of my rant, if I offended anyone, I didn't mean to. You probably wasted a good amount of your own time just then aswell XD

/rant.

Firstly, well written post. Secondly, with the above comment, I disagree. In my opinion, it has little to do Western interests and more to do with fundamental regilous ideals and beliefs programmed into such people at an early age. If the Allies were to pull out of Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other location with a western force present, acts of terrorism or other heinous crimes would still occur.

I probably should have clarified on that comment. I think the situation in Afghanistan, and Afghanistan only, with regards to the Taliban would settle down, in fact they are trying to negotiate as we speak according to some news sources. Whether or not some other group pops up to continue the fight would have to be seen, but based on the Taliban's workings, it's clear it's purely a "get off our land" issue, as opposed to a "we want an Islamic world order." Just to note, I'm from a middle-eastern background (Christian though) myself, which is why I talk so much about this stuff.

was a pretty botched raid. they crashed a commanche style stealth helicopter that isn't meant to exist, and failed to destroy half of it, whole thing sounds like a mess.

My friend's first reaction to Osama's death was: "Osama Bin Laden was killed in a raid? ...The next CoD's gonna be epic!!!"

The same reason they made a huge deal about it, to make Barack Obama look good?

of course, but I doubt they would announce it just to make him appeal better. the ramifications if he isn't really 'dead' would utterly destroy obama and probably America in general....think about it, after annoucing it, all the partying and yahooing around if this was to be a hoax, heads will roll. litteraly

Doubt it. Heads stayed well and truly intact despite the fact both the US and other Western world leaders blatantly lied to the public to encourage support for the invasion of a country and murder of their civilians.

"Saddam has weapons of mass destruction" is the most powerful lie of our time, and the most blinding red light that politicians should not and never can be trusted with military power.

Yet here we are, along with the rest of the world, acting like it was no big deal. To quote Nazi propaganda genius Joseph Goebbels; "The bigger the lie, the more it will be believed."
