I'm pretty excited about the 360 port of Akai Katana , due out in May. Love the art work and the fact that theyre shining up the visuals and putting a bit more effort into the presentation. _________________

Actually thats the one I was thinking about! I think Radiant Silvergun is towards the end of the year. Was it Akai or Radiant that someone said on here is quite similar to Ikaruga? If it's Akai then it's just around the corner, awesome!

So, Deathsmiles, we finally meet.
Definitely weaker than some of the other shooters on offer, but still a great game so far. Still learning everything though, how all the scoring works.
As usual, they try to tell a story and it's just boring. A bit of A tapping between stages to get though it all. The music is completely forgettable, there's nothing that stands out.
Not as complex in rules as other shooters which is a nice change though. All 4 characters play roughly the same with a different element for magic. Holding A slows the character down and you have a stronger shot power. 3 Bombs per life. Enemies drop gems and when your counter reaches 1000, hold 2 buttons together for massive power and chain bonus scoring until the counter resets to 0. About as complex as it gets.
Plenty of different modes, a 1.1 and 'mega black label' so theres plenty on offer. Sweet that all achievements are for the '360 version' within the game, as past Cave titles require you to play in arcade mode, but 360 mode is the same game with updated HD graphics.
3 difficulty levels, with an absolute bull*** level 999 for the black label, which is just ridiculous.
Pity that there is no practice mode. Have got a fair few of the standard playthrough ones so now I'm going to concentrate on a 1 credit clear with a character. I can get through the first 6 stages getting hit once or twice, but on the final stage, it's game over pretty quickly. Needing to learn some patterns to eventually get through it but it looks like I have to replay the same 6 stages in order to practice the final stage. Weak.

I also ordered deathsmiles. this is really the first time playing the genre. i was attracted by the characters style and graphics. I have always been put off by how hard the games are, but I figure with 4 difficulties and unlimited continues this should be an ok place to start?
Any tips you cna give a complete noob? Game probably wont come for another 2 weeks.. *sigh* _________________

When you first get it, just play through the game with each character at 'level 1', which is the easiest difficulty in Deathsmiles. Don't worry about the mega black label and others, you just want the normal experience first off as these are all variations from the 'arcade' version, and are much tougher.
Once you know which character you want to use, stick with him and see how long you can last. Start to remember which direction certain enemies pop up at certain points in a stage and you'll be well on your way. 1CC is only possible if you really stick with it and learn the ins and outs of each stage.
Thankfully, you've started with one of the easiest retail shmup releases this gen. Levels one through 6 aren't too difficult, as long as you learn the boss bullet patterns.
Oh, and concentrate more on the bullets than your character as you're moving through the trickier parts

Saw the 5pb logo and immediately stopped watching. Anyone who can mess up a port of Dodonpachi Daioujou as much as they did isn't worth my time.
Re: Deathsmiles: It's good, but not as good as Progear. I have no idea why it was chosen to be Cave's first-ever western release over Mushihimesama Futari or Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu. Both those games are way, way more fun.
EDIT: Also, apparently Radiant Silvergun showed up briefly on PartnerNet a month or so ago. Not sure how complete it was, but if it's the full thing, then it's on track for its May release date. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

I'd say it's because it's the easiest of the lot. If a typical aussie played Mushihimesama they'd gasp in total disbelief and stop playing after the first credit. Deathsmiles seems much more achievabale at getting completed and is easier accessible for casual fans like el_supraman. Honestly, the xbla should be enough for people, you'd be mad to call yourself a casual fan of the genre and not own Ikaruga. Then there's Guwange if you really like your 'bullet hell' shooters.
Deathsmiles is too boring and mushihimesama I can't be bothered putting in the effort to 1cc anymore, can't wait for radiant silvergun, hopefully it's not too far off.
Announcements on shmups for the arcade I don't bother taking seriously anymore. I swear 10 shmups have been announced within the last year, yet none of them have been released.

The trick is to keep an eye on Partnernet. If you know someone with PNet access, or read a forum where a few users have PNet access, you can usually find out about what state various XBLA games are in.
Also, Mushihimesama's Novice Mode is way, way easier than Deathsmiles (or ESPGaluda, which is otherwise the easiest shooter Cave have made) and a really good way to introduce players to the concepts of bullet hell shooting.
I agree that Ikaruga is a good starting point, although calling it a shooter at all is a bit of a stretch, it's really just a cunningly disguised puzzle game.
Have you ever played Radiant Silvergun? If you haven't, then you're in for a real treat. It's definitely one of the most amazing games of all time. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

I wouldn't be so hard on 5pb. Sure they messed up Dodon but they did an absolutely perfect job with the home version of Ketsui. _________________

Which I haven't played.
That game is like... a mythical beast to me. I hear so much about it, but I have never been able to get myself a copy for various reasons, and it'll probably never be emulated because MAMEdev hates the PGM System. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

Cave shows you how to play Akai Katana Shin.
It's coming out for the 360 in Japan next month, but, sadly, will be region-locked, as Cave are hoping a western publisher will pick it up.
Looks a lot better than Deathsmiles, too. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

I've played a few shmups on 360 and I have to say something about Ketsui just screams quality. It's feels so very polished, balanced and superbly designed. It's a bullet hell thing but it's extremely well designed. I comes between a classic shmup and a modern shmup, incorporating the best of both. I spent $80 importing it and I have to say it was worth every cent.
Great music, superb play mechanics, addictive levels, just a really awesome game. Have to say it's the best shmup title I've played thus far. _________________

Looks great, here's hoping a western publisher does indeed pick it up! I'm always a sucker for a quality shmup. _________________

So, I posted this vid last October of a new shmup for XBLA/PSN:
Trouble Witches Neo has just been released, and comes in at 800 points (also available on PScantlogiN).
The game is probably the best looking shmup I've played, from the detailed backdrops to the vibrant colours. It's similar to the Gundemonium Collection in terms of bullet patterns and progression. It is quite hard, harder than Gundemonium and the recent Deathsmiles, but it's no Espgaluda II or Guwange.
There's an online co-op mode if anyobdy picks this up and is up for a game (360) maybe we can get the achievements for 1CC through co-op.
The magic cards seem interesting, I have only played for 30 mins so I can't comment too much on the gameplay. But basically instead of bombs you collect gold from enemies to spend on 'magic cards' which are bombs with different effects and cost. Only 3 can be stored at a time, but shops are littered throughout each stage. There's also another magic bar which sets a barrier around you where bullets are slowed, and is regenerating when deactivated.
WIll comment more when I play more like the arrange mode, but worth checking out for any shmup fan out there, comes in at 940MB.

Just stumbled upon this news, announced 10 days ago. As an avid figure collector it's awesome I finally have a figure to show for one of my all-time favourite games, Ikaruga! I thought this might interest a few people so I thought I'd post it here.
Kotobukiya to release a 6-inch 155-piece model kit (1/144):
A KOTOBUKIYA import! For fans of the shooting game Ikaruga (first released by Treasure in arcades in 2001 and then subsequently on Dreamcast, GameCube, and Xbox Live), this is a very exciting time. Kotobukiya is proud to present the main player unit from the game in a brand new Fine Scale Model Kit, IKARUGA WHITE! Based on an original garage kit by Isetani Hiroshi, then further improved by the original designer Suzuki Yasushi, the Ikaruga is a fantastic futuristic fighter plane and the only weapon able to take down the Horai. A completely unique craft with twin engine pods that absolutely bristles with weaponry, this is a great model kit for intermediate builders with approximately 150 pieces. Accurate down to the smallest detail, the Ikaruga White features all of the cool mechanical parts you’ve come to know and love from the game, and as a bonus it includes special homing laser effects parts! The plane is over 6 inches tall (1/144 scale) and can be displayed on a special pyramid-like base decorated with the motif of the game’s final boss. Finally, the Ikaruga White comes packaged in a box decorated with an all-new illustration by Suzuki Yasushi!
It can be found for about US$42 and is released in July by import.

Hi there!
I'm pretty new to shmups, and was wondering if I should get Castle of Shikigami 2 and/or Psyvariar, as they're $7 each at EB. I do have two Namco sticks for some shmup action, so I'd appreciate it if I could get some thoughts especially since I've never really touched the shmup/bullet hell genre. _________________

$7 for Castle of Shikigami 2 is well worth it. I reckon it's a very solid vertical shooter. It plays smoothly and it's difficult, but not super impossible or anything. The English dub is apparently awful (I've only played the JP version), but for that price shouldn't really factor in much.
*EDIT* Ignore some of that post... It's a bit sad when you get horizontal and vertical confused. They're both vertical _________________

Unfortunately I don't have a 360, though I'm looking forward to getting one just for arcade titles not on PS3. Just need to save funds! I have heard of a lot of 360 options too, just that those two games at $7 were pretty tempting!
@Pilot:
Thanks, I'll see if it's still there tomorrow. I might pick up Psyvariar if it's there as well then. _________________
