That's a very broad statement. It depends on what sort of encryption was used and if the key was available in some form to the attacker.

I've seen some reports of people who use PSN having their card defrauded recently, but nothing concrete linking the breach to the fraud as of yet.

Wait... so Sony employees are all just kicking back somewhere, telling jokes and twiddling their thumbs, because "meh, it's not like people are paying us for the online"?

I find that belief laughable. Of course they are doing all they can to sort it out. To think otherwise is just plain stupid.

Sony would be fully aware that every day that PSN is down, is another day they lose customers to Microsoft.

if someone spends the time and effort of discovering my details and steals the $47.32 (or whatever) in my bank account - I'll be super pissed.

I'm keeping my PS3 console offline from now on, not even kidding.

Jumping ship to PC gaming, asap.

AND

Sony should send me an apology letter, for having this issue distract me from Minecraft.

Great idea. The PC is the ultimate platform in terms of data security. It's impossible to steal your credit card details from one of those.

I'm sure the employees they have are doing everything they can to get it rectified, but do you seriously think sony are sinking an equal amount of cash into a free service that microsoft are sinking into a service that costs however much a month?

With that money comes extra people, extra maintenece, extra secuirty etc.

Also I've gotta question the people saying that they're pissed off because sony promised a free and continuiing service? It's not like PSN is gone for good. I'm sure that XBL has had to have had down time in the past, I know stuff like WoW has had heaps of down time and server crashes. It's just in that situation Microsoft or blizzard can refund people the money. Son'y can't exactly refund the nothing your spending on PSN membership.

Give it a rest already. Pretty much every friggin post you make about this involves you going on about how PSN offer a free service. It's getting very tedious.

We're all aware that PSN is free and XBL charges for online.

Just cause PSN is free doesn't mean they aren't putting the same amount of effort into fixing the issues and it also doesn't mean they don't have the money either. You don't know what they are doing to resolve this or how much time it will take or how much money is involved, no one does. So stop saying that Microsoft would fix the issue faster, just cause people pay for there online service, cause you really have no clue.

Who knows? Do you know benza? While PSN is offline, their reputation is going down the sh***ter and the online component for PS3 is just as important to Sony's customers as XBL is to Microsoft's, so I don't see why not.

Less then half my posts in this thread have been about it? And none of my posts in the other thread have been about it.

And what now if I respond to your post you're going to complain that I'm focussing too much on it again?

I was simply meaning you've mentioned that PSN is free alot of times and its been your basis for your arguement, as to why Sony aren't caring as much as Microsoft would.

You have no idea if that's the case and I'm sure Sony care just as much. Just cause online is free (which it should be on all console's IMO) doesn't mean Sony are being slack at sorting out the issue.

I don't think it has anything to do about sony "caring" i really think it has more to do with sony resources to fixing the issue. That would come down to if the service is free or not because of ready funds...

IMO

I really think also sony are feeling the problems of having a free service but hey what do i know....

Yeah, cause offering a free online service, totally means that Sony has no money to fix problems. icon_rolleyes.gif

Well judging by how many days its been down for "8" a case could easily be made.

So you're an expert on fixing hacking issues are you? You have no idea the extent of problems these hackers have caused and for all you know they could be (and probably are) working around the clock.

I'm not defending Sony and I think its bad that they have allowed this security breach, but I'm just saying that there free online service means squat. If this had happened on 360, the problem could take just as long to fix.

Didn't I read somewhere Sony got a security firm to investigate this? So doesn't it meant it could be up to them as to how long until the PSN is back online?

A security breach of this magnitude will take time, just because technology advances, it doesn't mean things can be done in a day. Investigation takes time, regardless of whether the service is free or not. Especially if there is going to be a court case in the future, then there are evidence to gather as well and that in itself have a lot of rules for the evidence to be a valid one. Gathering data must following certain steps and a lot of documentation which can be time consuming.

Extra money may lead to better maintenance and security of PSN. But with anything, you can never be 100% secured.

Why does shit like this always have to turn into a pissing competition?

Basically I'm a long time Sony customer, but also Nintendo and Microsoft. They made a mistake, which hasn't affected me whatsoever, aside from playing my games offline, which I do frequently when I play singleplayer games anyways.

It's not a big deal to me, Sony will fix it, the world will keep on spinning. I will still buy their games and products, just as I would any other company in this situation. It was a mistake, everybody makes them, I'm not going to punish you for it. Forgive and forget. If it was a repeated issue, then sure, I'd probably reconsider my next purchase.

To the people going on about free service, if PALGN or Facebook goes down do you rage and cry yourself to sleep? No. If they accidentally let your personal information slip would you be angry? Sure, but you'd probably keep using their service.

Yes. Security holes will still be there. Most of the time you can only safeguard from known security exploits.

You mean the basis of my argument on the subject of weather sony's service being free has anything bearing on the issue at hand focused on the fact that sony's service is free and how it relates to the issue?

... What?

I wasn't even the one who brought it up, other people were allready discussing it and I through my oppinion into the ring.

Honestly I don't think the PSN being down thing is going to be the biggest hit to sony, I think it's the fact that a lot of confiedential info is now out there to a bunch of hackers. And depending on weather you beleive the hackers or Sony even credit card details.

That's fucking huge.

You lot talking about PSN being free are ignoring something important, PSN is a revenue stream for Sony via the PSN Store and having the network down is costing them money (opportunity lost). They will naturally want to minimize down time while removing any known security holes, in order to get their revenue stream back.

We'll probably never get the figures from it, but I bet this is costing them an ungodly amount of money for 2 weeks downtime, despite any legal repercussions and extra costs to rebuild their security.

I honestly don't care if some anonymous has my details, anyone with intent could get that information if they tried hard enough (as Till@ pointed out regarding Facebook, but I've also given my details out in countless Ebay transactions). It took me 5 minutes to get my debit card re-issued, took me 2 minutes to change my e-mail password.

If I get a call from someone saying I haven't payed my latest instalment on a mortgage I never took out, in a place I've never been, no biggie, I'm not the kind to freak out. That shit ends up working itself out as long as you're capable of explaining yourself. I wouldn't hold anyone responsible, I made the choice to give out that info knowing the risks. Perhaps I'm too easy going though? icon_wink.gif

PSN will be up again on Tuesday 3rd May.

Sony has confirmed that it hopes to restore some fuctionality to the PSN service by next Tuesday in a new statement on the PlayStation Blog.

"Our employees have been working day and night to restore operations as quickly as possible, and we expect to have some services up and running within a week from yesterday. However, we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we are confident that the network is secure."

Dated April 27, the update posted by Patrick Seybold (Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media), would put the estimated return date for PSN services as May 3, meaning that the service will have been offline for two weeks.

Although which services will be coming back online next week is unclear, Sony has stated they are working on new security measures for the future, as well as seeking out those responsible for the breach, confirming they "are working closely with a recognised technology security firm in order to find those responsible for this criminal act, no matter where in the world they might be located."
