^ My thoughts exactly. They recoup some of their development costs & get some free play-testers. This does look like it would be more fun to play than most of the current 3DS library at least.

Paying for a glorified demo or to get into a Beta is nothing new. I pre-ordered Rift to get into the Beta, own Minecraft (still in Beta), bought BulletStorm to get into the Gears3 Beta.

**** you capcom.

Anyone can make a forum thread or sign an online petition saying they want Such-and-such game to be made, it's another thing to put their money where their mouth is. Then again, it'll be a real slap in the face if this demo/beta sells well and doesn't end up being green-lit.

Anyways, I'd love MML 1 and 2 to be re-released. And even though I'd rather see this new game on a home console... At least it'll give me a reason to actually get a 3DS.

That's retarded. Beta testing is a job people get paid to do it.

Not the other way around. Paying to buy the beta for minecraft or getting one game to get access to the beta of another is a completly different thing.

QA is a job. Public Beta tests? Not so much. I've been let into a bunch of MMO Betas, and not been paid for any one of them. So whoever is paying you to do this Beta testing, let me know. I'd love to quit my day job and test games for a living. =p

And buying the Beta for Minecraft is different to buying a Beta for MML3 how, exactly? Both are unfinished games with no potential release window in sight. Or are you giving Minecraft a pass because it's by an Indie developer?

I don't know. In one sentence you say it's not ok to pay for a Beta because it's something people get paid to do (which isn't really true for Beta testing). Then you turn around and say it's ok for Minecraft, or as a pre-order bonus (or a bonus from another game).

Yeah actually, I generally hold a giant multinational company that made over 500 million dollars last year to a different standard then one guy developing a game in his bedroom.

The same way I'm cool with fan funded movies like that Nazi's on the moon one but if Michael Bay or James Cameron tried to pull that I would call bull shit.

The pre-order to get into a beta is completly different because your buying the game and getting early access to the beta. If you buy this you're still going to have to buy Ledgends 3 when or if it gets released.

Buying one game for beta into another is again completly different because you're buying a full working game. And as a free bonus you get Beta to another game by the same developers.

And one-guy has made, what, 20million Euros or so off of Minecraft? Free QA testing. Development being funded on the fly. He's shown that the model works, and the only strange thing is that more developers haven't tried to do the same. Why take a gamble on 2-3 years of development if you don't have to?

We don't know how it's going to work either. How much will it cost? Will there be updates to the prototype? Do we get the full game for free when it hits, or a discount? What do we get if the game isn't green-lit in the end? Now if you take a hipster-cynic approach and assume the worst-case scenario of course you're going to say "**** you Capcom." But there aren't any details on it yet, so it's a bit early for me to troll Capcom.

He's shown the model works in a sandbox experiment game with no goal or end when you release a fully functioning sandbox and slowly add features over time.

Releasing a story line goal orientated game in the same manner is completly different.

This is capcom we're talking about. Charging 10 bucks to unlock alt costumes that are allready on the disc, re-releaing the same game with incremental updates and charging full price again when it's been out for a year. You seriously think they're not going to get as much fucking money out of this as possible?

Did some searching and apparently it will be priced at 200 yen in Japan, which is about $2.30 Australian.

I'd pay that. Paying to beta test a game is a bit lame, but as long as it's only a small amount like that, I don't mind too much.

A Beta is a Beta. Whether it's stress testing an MMO in progress, working out balance issues in a competitive multiplayer component, or ironing out the kinks in a single player game. You play and you provide feedback.

I'm guessing you're having a go at Street Fighter? Alt Costumes aren't mandatory and don't impact on the gameplay. Also, depending on how cynical you are, those aesthetic DLC packs funded the free extra modes that were added as DLC. Super Street Fighter 4 came out at half price. You're getting these facts of yours from where exactly?

Oh and a cynic is someone who has a negative view of the world.

That's awesome if it's true. And does that mean the 3DS store will use actual currency and not a points system?

It's confirmed to be priced at 200 Yen, but I dont know what it will be officially priced at here ($2.30 is the direct conversion), if it even hits our store. I dont think it's been confirmed outside of Japan yet, though the English PR should indicate it will get some kind of localisation. With region locking it could be just for NA though.

And yeah, I think the 3DS store has already been confirmed to use currency, though it might be like PSN where you have to buy points in bulk. I'm not too sure.

I can only imagine a hipster-cynic as someone who wears the popuplar women's underwear and thinks of no action as selfless. Or something?

Typical gamer whingery. Nobody takes a moment to praise someone like Capcom trying out a development process that is open to community involvement, they just ark up and crack the shits about having to shed a few dollars to check it out.

We indulge in a expensive hobby, but wow do we crack the shits when we don't get everything for free...

I'll be checking it out, for sure - reminds me of Shareware, really. Besides, I'd kick myself for not checking out an available release of a new Legends title.

I just imagine what the quality of games would be like if developers would release playable builds for community playtesting and feedback. Although that's only if developer's are actually taking the feedback on and using that to improve on the game. Just look at what community involvement has done for something like World of Warcraft.
