I'm a massive fan of the books and I've been keeping a close eye on the TV series right from the beginning! Acting/story remains to be seen but the sets and costuming are pretty gorgeous, and GRRM has a hand in it so I think it'll be pretty good. I can't quite get used to them aging the kids up though, something about it just feels weird. _________________

I'm currently reading the second book. I'm gonna fucking die if I don't get to watch this soon.
Dany looks spot on and Sean Bean as Ned is a beauty. Robert doesn't look how I pictured him, though.

I'm very excited. Hopefully it gets the Walking Dead treatment where the show is concise and to the point, while still taking liberties to change it to fit the film/TV world.
Makes me wonder if there will be a Wheel of Time TV series. I know there was a game and it was great for its time but it completely went under the radar, overshadowed by some other big releases.

It's got a midget! It can't fail!
I haven't read the books but I've been looking forward to this for a long time. Hofepully it's not going down the Walking Dead route of not being available and me having o acquire it in any way possible.

Damn that actually looks pretty damn promising... Looking forward to seeing it as well as reading the final damn book (at least I hope it's final) _________________

Final? No, no. A Dance with Dragons is book 5. Then there's The Winds of Winter. And then there's A Dream of Spring. Judging by how long it's taken the last few books to come out, I'm guessing we have 15 years before the series finishes (if it doesn't split again - it's gone from 3 books to 7 over the course of the planning). _________________

#@!$.... GRRM will be dead before it's done then, old fat man that he is. I'm not sure if anyone could take up his mantle like Robert Jordan's has been either. There's too many damn characters and subplots. _________________

On the bright side, now that there is a tv series, he will probably be under a lot more pressure to start churning out the books.
That said, the tv series, should it go on long enough, probably has a contract clause to go their own way if he doesn't catch up.

I can't see the TV series catching up. Assuming it doesn't get canned immediately (US series tend to do this a lot, especially the "good" ones) I can't see them fitting a whole book into a season. That's at least 5 years up his sleeve to get the next book out. _________________

They have announced that it will be one book per season.
When was the last book released? 3 or 4 years ago maybe?

Yeah i just can't see them continuing to fit a whole book in a regular TV 20ish ep season without it just being a gloss over. But who knows, maybe they'll do 50 eps for a season.
Crows was the last book, released end of 2005 _________________

So the show premieres tomorrow.
The reviews have been streaming in, and they are glowing:
| Time wrote: | | Watching Game of Thrones is like falling into a gorgeous, stained tapestry. This epic, unflinching fantasy noir takes our preconceptions of chivalry, nobility and magic and gets medieval on them. |
| New York Post wrote: | | The art direction, acting and incredible sets are as breathtaking as the massive scope of the series. A bit slow at first, but it's a grabber once you get into it. |
| The Hollywood Reporter wrote: | | There's a real allure to costume-dramas that pair dense mythology with all of the crowd-pleasing elements of war, honor, pride, lust, power and, yes, even humor. Thrones has all of those in spades and supports them with exceptional storytelling, strong writing, superb acting and some stunning visual effects. |
| TV Guide wrote: | | After putting its distinctive stamp on genres as diverse as the mob drama (The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire), the Western (Deadwood), the urban crime saga (The Wire), the period-piece potboiler (Rome), the horror-show bodice-ripper (True Blood), HBO now turns its extravagant attention to adult epic fantasy. HBO has found its answer to Lord of the Rings in adapting George R.R. Martin's enthralling, sprawling, ruthlessly brutal and magnificently entertaining series of page-turners. |
| Multichannel News wrote: | | HBO provided six episodes of the Game of Thrones for screening. It’s the most engrossing six hours of television I’ve seen in years. I made the mistake of popping the second episode into the DVD player around 9 at night, and was so mesmerized I just couldn’t stop watching, and stayed up until 2.am. I was an exhausted wreck the next day…. It was TOTALLY worth it. |
There's a lot more but you get the idea. It's said Game of Thrones does for the fantasy genre what The Wire did for crime. Take that as you will...
I read the first book a while back I can easily say it was the best novel I've read. I'm just about done with the second book and I have the next two sitting on my shelf. This series is going to be fantastic. I've not anticipated a series premiere like this for a while. It's good to get excited about stuff like this again!
Btw, HBO put up a pretty cool interactive viewers guide for the uninitiated. Got a map and House guide too. _________________

I'm basically dying for this. Monday's going to be a long day at work.
I'm part-way through book 4 and I can comfortably say it's the best series I've ever read.
Stellar year for HBO with this, Boardwalk Empire 2 and Curb Your Enthusiasm 8.
