***** say whaaat?

The only casual console Nintendo has ever made was the Wii, and even then it was mostly the 3rd party developers making the casual stuff for it.

DS became a casual console but you are right. They found their success with casual though and I doubt they will turn their back on all the money.

Haven't you heard of the most popular selling game ever Wii Sports? 3rd party devs have always struggled with Nintendo platforms and the only hardcore games on it that were any way successful were made by Nintendo.

Am I the only one who thinks games like Call of Duty are just as 'casual' as Wii Sports? Different demographs, but the basic idea.

Once anything reaches a certain mass it becomes casual in a way especially when they only buy a game once a year whether it be the latest sports game or cod.

probably not (referring to 'competitive' games on consoles anyway) PC games like SC II, COD4 and CSS are certainly "competitive" games though, trust me some of the events they put on are insane and the skill level is phenomenal (Im a marketing coordinator for a LAN cafe)

I'm not talking about competitiveness though, as I think even the most 'casual' and basic games can develop a strong competitive scene (eg: Tetris). I'm more talking about the way in which the game is designed and the general public perception.

Your right, as far as FPS go I'd say COD is the most casual shooter on the market at the moment. It's about as casual and arcadey as you can get basically, esp online.

yeah most games are designed as casual games these days because thats where the money lies "competitive games usually arise with some kind of mod tools, yeah the COD franchise is pretty much spray bullets and hope your luck these days, but doesnt change the perception people have. We can thank some brutal marketing by mircosoft and Sony to discredit Nintendo as only being "casual" hell the previous Gen Im fairly sure N64 had the best competitive games (Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye) and the "greatest" game of all time (Zelda OoT).

still keen to see what Nintendo has to offer they rarely disappoint icon_smile.gif

The DS is one mother ****er of a hardcore machine. It also has a lot of casual titles, which helped it's success, but as with every market leader (such as PS2 and Wii) it gets overwhelmed with shovelware/casual titles.

CVG reports all new controller with built-in HD screen.

What's most exciting about the Wii successor however is its all-new controller, which industry sources have indicated is not simply an upgraded Wii Remote, and will even feature a built-in HD screen.

Our sources did not specify whether or not the controller displays will feature any other functionality, such as that of the DS's touch screen, but it's easy to imagine the sort of innovation an extra screen could bring to Wii 2 games.

"Nintendo's plans sound unreal," one source said. "Publishers are already planning launch titles and it's all very exciting.

"The hardware is even more powerful than current HD consoles and backwards compatible with Wii. The controller will be all-new and has a HD screen on it."

Im just hoping its not a waggle controller, its bad enough one of those babies flying off and hitting your HD tv its something else when the controller itself has a HD screen in it.

No more socking dingers drunk playing baseball if thats the case.

The DS is one of my favourite consoles ever. BUT Going by marketing and how it sold it is a casual console. Bit strange though as the 3DS has none of the casualness to it or at least they are presenting it as a hardcore console.

You might as well quit hoping. There's no way in hell Nintendo will abandon motion controls now.

***** say whaaaaat (again)?

Marketing is more than just advertising (according to my Year 11 Business Management teacher). And of course advertising will always be selling casual products; that's where the mainstream market is.

The actual products being sold are more what's important. And looking at the DS's library, it has Olympic swimming pools filled with balls to the wall hardcore titles, in addition to the casual stuff.

Saying DS is casual because the ads have Olivia Newton-John in them is like saying that the PS2 is casual because it has SingStar.

I'm saying the DS has sold off the back of it's casual titles. But thinking about it more you are right. The DS initially sold as well as it did because of kid's games, the hardcore games and only later did it morph in my head as being casual.

Someone made a good point over at GAF that's worth considering.

Nintendo's Wii sales are in a very steady decline. The system itself isn't selling badly persay, but it's not selling anywhere near as good as it was 12 months ago. There's been a tremendously sharp drop in sales, is looking to continue dropping, and the software support from both Nintendo and third parties is practically dead. Nintendo themselves have Wii Sports Motion and Zelda and...that is it for the entire year. Conduit 2 is literally the last 'profile' 3D party release. After that there is nothing at all except shovelware.

Now, at the end of this month Nintendo are due to give their fiscal year meeting to investors. Considering the Wii's drop in sales, it's not going to be a flashy report, and they're not going to be happy. Nintendo, like any public company, will want to impress shareholders, and one of the best ways to do that is to show what they have on the horizon.

This would be the ideal time to announce the Wii 2, at least from a business perspective.

Additionally, while rumours are always suspect, Game Informer are usually on the ball. In terms of rumours, they're one of the most reliable, and their report was posted with quite a bit of confidence. The reports coming from other places is also interesting. It doesn't so much suggest they're all reporting what Game Informer posted, but are posting from the same source. Essentially, Game Informer may have broken a gentlemen's agreement, and since they were first in it's fair game for everybody else.

I normally dont jump on this kind of stuff, especially for Nintendo since there's always so much bullshit circulating, but the math adds up better than I expected.

There's still DQX... there was an interview a few weeks ago saying it was still for Wii and that we would hear (the first) information about it at(by?) the end of the year... That is probably 2012's only worthwhile Wii game. Japan will eat it up well.

And goddamn it, Pikmin 3! icon_sad.gif

E3, be our savior.

That's nice for consumers, but not for shareholders. Nintendo cant really say at the meeting "Wait for E3!". They'll want to show them impressive software and news for the future right then and there.

That might mean new software announcements mind you. That too would be good.

And them unlocalised Japanese games like Xenoblades and Last Story. But yeah, there really isn't a whole lot...

Xenoblade is confirmed for Europe at least, Last Story might come. But I doubt Nintendo or third parties have anything major left for Wii. They might announce a big title or two at E3, but nothing too "big", resources are going towards 3DS and the new console I would think. But who knows, Nintendo like to dump all their titles in Q3/Q4 in short notice. Just have to wait to E3. It's Nintendo.

Oh, there's also the new Kirby...

New reports from IGN reporter:

Additional sources informed IGN the screen (on the controller) has touch capability. Dual analog sticks on the controller.

[ With other info it seems: the controller is a touch tablet, with moderate graphic output (appears to be sub-HD, so nothing comparable to an Ipad, for example.)
controller specs : 6-inch screen, single touch (so no multitouch, it seems), front camera, acts as a wii sensor bar, has a d-pad, two bumpers, two triggers, possibly more. ]

Can stream game content from the console. Not sure if it'll be full games, mini-games, or apps.

There will be first and third party "Wii 2" games at E3. No clue if they'll be playable.

New Nintendo controller allows players to stream entire games to the device from the console - "like a miniature television."

Honestly, me.

I'm having enough trouble trying to get excited for skyward sword as it is. I'm kind of getting bored of the same old shit from em. Give me a new IP damm it. A good one not Wii music.

Seriously, I'd be perfectly fine with it being SD if only it were any GOOD.

Don't forget though, Nintendo are the people who still use N64 graphics in Animal Crossing icon_biggrin.gif

I'd be kinda disappointed, to be honest. The Wii hasn't really had its chance to shine yet (unless you count that golden age of mid-2007 to late 2008) and this generation seems far from over.

A DSi-esque incrimental upgrade wouldn't be too bad, though, as long as it supported HD. That would be enough to make me play through the Mario Galaxy series again.

Each generation gets shorter as technology advances at a faster pace. We don't really get to appreciate anything as much as we used to.

New consoles and handhelds still excite me but not in a way that they used to, because we can expect better, faster - so there is far less "wow" than previous gens.

Also, we need a bigger house to fit our consoles. Slow down people, let us afford a bigger place before you release more console upgrades. icon_razz.gif
