So... last night I went to my first gig in about a year and a half.
I've heard everything from the haters already, so no need for that but I'm glad I went. The last gig I went to was Bodyjar's farewell gig in Melbourne, and while it was awesome the crowd (particularly for 28 Days, I think) was pretty rowdy - I stay out of the mosh but I got pretty bruised even on the barrier. Pair that with my glasses being broken at Soundwave that year from a crowdsurfer kicking me in the head, and you might understand why I was put off going to concerts for a while
Anyway, I wasn't super-enthused at the prospect of an arena show (never been to a GA one before, the last one was Matchbox 20 a few years back that was all seating) since I figured the crowd would be even worse than at the Corner, but I absolutely adored Good Charlotte back in high school (this would be a good 8 or 9 years ago, at least) and I thought I should see them at least once. Boys Like Girls being booked as one of the supports sealed the deal for me - unfortunately they pulled out, but their replacements (New Empire) were pretty good - I'd never heard of them before but they put on a good show. I can't say the same for the other support, Sh*t Stack
I was really happy that they played a lot of their old stuff, although it made me feel old that (1) the stuff that was coming out around the time I was really into them is now their "old" stuff, and (2) the place was full of schoolkids. The crowd wasn't fantastic though, there were a lot of annoying kids around and there didn't seem to be a lot of energy in it. I don't like crowdsurfers and I can't say I was hoping for a lot of surges and squeezing but only a couple of surfers came over my head (and I was front near the middle) the whole night.
Made me remember how much I love music though - I spent years absolutely hooked, but somewhere along the way I stopped listening to/keeping track of music, radio, etc. Most of the songs of the past few years I'm familiar with come from Glee or maybe Rock Band. I want to start a band again now - again, this was a dream of mine stemming from years ago. When we had to write an essay in year 10 German about our hopes/dreams, my teacher told me I'd never be in a band because it "wasn't me" - I'd love to prove her wrong. It's a pity I only have a couple of friends into the same kind of music, and they're completely unmusical and/or tone deaf
Yellowcard and GC are co-headlining a brief tour in the USA in June, so I'm thinking of hitting that. _________________

I miss Magic Dirt. This is very different from the Dirt, will definitely have to go to the gig though.

I had no idea TMV were playing here again! Dang! Saw 'em at the forum a while back, and even though dudeman couldn't hit the notes (more hair than voice from memory), they played damned well and the sound was killer. Hope he does better this time! _________________

Cedric (singer) no longer has the hair but he is still as dextrous as ever. I have seen TMV seven times and At The Drive In once, each of their shows has been a truly unique journey with some of the most amazing musicianship I have ever seen, improv and some really really haunting trippy sections / tempo changes and outright reversals of tone. I could go on. As a live band I suggest everyone check em out once (preferably not at a festival where they tend to just play a set rather than a 2 hour journey).
They land somewhere within the grid that shares a place with some of the themes of Tool and Meshuggah.
If your in Melbs and can afford the $90 definately go see, best viewed with 3D glasses if you know what I mean.........
Anyway, keen as to meet up for drinks with you Fetid. Msg closer to the date. _________________

I'd love to see them again, but there's no way that I'll be paying $90 to do so =( _________________

Going to see SBTRKT play some sort of a DJ Set on the 21st of October, closest gig to my birthday that I actually want to see.
Stephen Malkmus is coming soon too apparently! _________________

Tossing up if I should go see Periphery tonight at 'the zoo' in the valley, anyone know if there's anywhere I'd be able to park my car nearby without having to pay crazy fees? _________________

[quote="Cian"]Exactly why I skipped this time. Amazing at The Forum in 2008, but they've gone steadily downhill since Bedlam. Make sure you guys bring comfortable shoes, y'all be running for the first street bench when you get outside.
quote]
Wha? Is there no seating or something? Volta usually play for around 3 hours if thats whay you mean. They will also be playing material from their new album (which is done but delayed by Warner due to RHCP new album apparently). I wouldn't say they have gone downhill, their live performance is as tight and wicked as ever (new drummer rips too, check youtube of recent Omar Rodriguez Group shows) and like most progressive acts they evolve which possibly isn't to everyones taste. Personally cant wait, maybe getting into splendour tomorrow too to see them. (/end TMV worship). _________________

Ended up going to see Periphery and TesseracT last night. Had a great night, I went alone but overheard some people talking about the bands on the train (left my car at a mates), ended up hanging out with them most the night and they turned out to be from a pretty awesome Brissy band and they're going to send me an EP.
Some random local band started it all off, they were fairly average and I'm not sure if it was their fault or not but it didn't sound very clear. Also for some reason they had two dedicated vocalists, I couldn't really understand why. The only really good thing about them was that they made it
TesseracT I'd only just heard for the first time in the car on the way down, which I kind of wish I'd listened to them more so I would've been more familiar with their music, but it was their performance was still great and their vocalist was amazing (dare I say it better than Peripheries).
Periphery I've loved for ages and are the band I'd been waiting for. I managed to get in the center about 2-3 rows from the front, which is what I'd consider the perfect spot and in a great part of the mosh. This was my first 18+ gig and I think the mosh was overall much better because of it, there wasn't a single fight dancer all night, I was a little disappointed with the lack of movement outside of headbanging and jumping though, but that's just being picky.
Afterwards I went back to my mates and then drove home, glad I did too, next to no traffic at midnight, made for a pretty nice drive compared to going at peak hour. _________________

Very limited seating at The Palace, and something tells me you'll be right up in the pit. And if you want my advice, stay off the balconies, the sound has always been shit up there. I went to see Eddy Current Suppression Ring last year and left early because it was so bad.
I'm sure they'll put on a great show as always but unless you're completely obsessed, I don't see how they're worth seeing more than twice. That was enough for me anyway.
DJ Shadow tomorrow night, YEEEEAAAHHHAHAAHAHHHAHAHAA!! _________________

Mars Volta was fantastic, was on the second balcony with a perfect view and the sound was really really great. They had their speakers suspended pretty much eye level with me, the sound wasn't so good at the very top or back from the rail and was better ont he floor level (though this was packed and too pushy for me / we got our own corner to rock out and couldnt be happier).
Mind you I have only seen them play three venues in brisvegas (all nowhere near as good as the palace or most melbourne venues for that matter) and two festivals. This was by far the best volta show I have seen, straight into an hour and fifteen minutes of new unheard material (mindblowing future punk / tripped out sound warp / minimalist setup) ; cedrics performance was at a new level (must have done heaps of vocal training) he really nailed it. All 9 people I went with were blown away.
While it was only 1hr 30mins (previous shows have gone for three+ hours) it was absolutely worth it.
Saw Wu Tang as well, was funny and novelty but really pretty poor effort for such a large rap act.
Spent a good bender in the cherry bar (my friend is a pro skater, had the bar shut down till 9am was off the chain) after wu, slept, hit volta, did some shopping and went home.
Sorry I didnt get a chance to catch up with some of you (fetid) BUT!
I will be back for the BLIND GUARDIAN concerts Sunday October 2 and Moonday October 3. Staying in little collins at the victoria hotel. Would love to meet some of you this time (wont be with as many crew from melbs or here) so were can we meet for a beer Sunday October 2nd, round 2pm onwards? (I check in at 2, be with the gf).
YieW! Melbrourne is awesome btw. Retro Star rocks for clothes, minotaur was kick ass (scored heaps of books and dvds) and the lego exhibition was NUTS.
P.S. I am obsessed with TMV, they are the best band of all time imho, best recording artists, best performance and the music is righht up my alley and constantly blows me away. _________________
