Hi all,
It's that time of the year again for me, time to scratch my MMO itch. I've been thinking of picking up Rift but have heard very little of it since release. Is anyone here playing it? If so, do you have any thoughts or opinions to share?

I played the Beta and it was actually quite promising. I didn't really play for very long so I can't give too much of an opinion on it but from what I did play, it was definitely the most interesting MMORPG I've played in a long time. Reviews seem to be pretty positive too. I'd like to give it a proper shot before Guild Wars 2 comes out.

I enjoyed it but I started playing it towards the end of my MMORPG lifeline, it was time to end it. If you do play and you like pvp... don't roll defiant on briarcliff, they just continually got facerolled in every single bracket of warfronts week after week, it was really depressing.

I think I may pick this up over in the states during my holiday if I see it cheap enough. The cheapest I've seen it here is $85 at GAME!
--Update--
Sorry, JB have it for $79

It's $50 on Steam. I'm really tempted to get into it.

Rift is great fun, my main is currently a level 48 cleric on the Dayblind server for Defiant. There is tons to do, the pvp is great fun. I especially like the soul system which gives some very unique and flexible builds. The game has been very well supported by Trion, this week marks the first major content patch which includes a new 20 man raid and a massive world event open to all lvls for a week offering some sweet loot/mounts etc. For a mmo to receive a big update like this a mere month after launching is very promising.

Warfronts can be very frustrating with random players with most people having no idea whatsoever. However enter with a group from your guild and you will destroy the opposition. We won about 13 matches in a row the other night, a couple of codex matches we won about 1000 to 100. The advantage of having vent and sticking to a plan. _________________

Thanks for the feedback mantra! I'm definitely going to pick this up now, but it will have to wait till after the time consuming wedding and honeymoon. Do you recommend the Dayblind server for Aussies? Is there a particular non-official Aussie server?

Dayblind is the server a lot of aussies went to after there were huge ques on the Briarcliff server. As a result there are a good amount of players on 24/7. _________________

Rift doesn't do much in terms of innovation or raising the bar. If you want the same thing yet again, then Rift is worth a look, otherwise keep waiting. Most of the people I know who jumped on board are already burned out again. It got rave reviews for stability and completeness, but an MMO these days needs more than that.

Wish this was the case when I was playing. If you were able to get a full guild group you got a very occasional win, but that was very rare, we always had to fill in with some pugs. The entire server was complaining that we were losing literally 9/10 WFs, week after week after week. I am not even exaggerating in the slightest. It was REALLY bad on Briarcliff.
That sort of imbalance puts me off a game so bad... for a start I was on hugely imbalanced servers for my first MMO, on the underdog side, which never really got fixed and NA population has died rapidly as a result (oceanic died out almost completely now) - but also, I don't even like pvp in the first place. So it sucks that I could never even get into it on more balanced servers like some of the other Rift servers I heard good things about.
Again I am not exaggerating about Briarcliff - I don't know what it's like now since I quit a month ago, but it was going through a really rough period. The morale was extremely low on Defiant, it was depressing to even log on.

Really enjoying this game, seems to really take the best bits of a number of games and still feel new.
Took a screenshot before...
Game looks real good!

Asphodel, only chose it because it was the only one that didn't have a queue when I played the trial.
The random events and ability to quickly join a group in the area are brilliant.
For me, the weakest part of the game is the audio. Generic sounds with no real oomph. _________________ My YouTube game videos!

A couple more screens.
First one is same location as the pic above, just at a different time of the day to show the nice lighting the game has.
The last one is the first instance.
It does seem a lot like a reskinned WoW but it's no less fun because of it
Got to level 20 now too!

Stopped playing Wow about a month ago. Thinking about giving this a try.
Is all the game data on the disc in the retail version or is there some kind of massive day 1 download and is there a decent sized player base?

Yes, latest patches etc. I expect there to be some downloading. But what I want to know is the whole client on the disc or is there some kind of whopping great 4GB+ download like there was for Cataclysm.

Ok, just put together a new PC so got to reinstall Rift from scratch.
The trial I downloaded was 8+ gigs but installing the full game from the disc, it only need a 1.5gb patch to take it up to current version.
Oh and btw... 120hz, full HD gaming (new PC and monitor) is AMAZING!!! _________________ My YouTube game videos!

Cataclysm was different as everyone needed the same files, as every zone changed and it would be unfair to force everyone to buy Cataclysm to just play WoW by itself.

This game is just beautiful...
Up to level 35 now. Lots more random PvP'ing which is great and some cool world event invasions.
I am addicted to collecting all the artifacts too!
So much polish for a new game.
Although it does seem to be WoW all over again with the defiant faction seemingly doubling or tripling guardians, which really sucks. Especially given that you can create toons for both factions on the same server. Quite a lot of players I grouped with are creating defiant characters now which sucks and doesn't really keep the server balanced.

Not an easy game to max out. On a GTX470 and I7950 I get less than 30fps in most places with custom settings of all settings on max. Had to scale it back to high for it to even be playable in some of the major invasions where there are more than 30 people participating.
The game itself is pretty good. I especially like the invasions event or whatever they are called. Only problem I have with them is they should scale better based on how many people are in the zone to assist. A couple of nights ago we had one at about 9.30PM local time that saw what must of been 100 death rifts open at once in the Freemarch. As there were not many players around it was impossible to fight off and it made the zone impossible to quest in.
