Yes Kyle, I love TiTs, oh, wait... wrong kind icon_smile.gif

Looks like a good game though. I'm hoping the PSP2 is backwards compatible with the PSP, there are so many games I want to play on the PSP but I really don't want to pick one up.

No, it's not, and it's probably recommended to play them in order to get the full effect. I mean, there are characters who appear in Ar tonelico 1 that appear in AT 2 and I'm guessing in 3 (Qoga) ... and characters that appear in AT 2 that appear in Qoga, too. Not to mention the game play gets more refined and while each story is kind of standalone, there's a few ties between them all, even if they're minute and are probably only going to appeal to a gamer who cares.

Definitely play the Ar Tonelico games in order, it makes a lot more sense. Qoga is the most linked one so far, there are characters from both AT1 and AT2 in the game, and the story follows on (indirectly) from AT2's.

As for the gameplay becoming more refined, this was certainly true for AT2 as compared to AT1. However, AT3 does drop the ball somewhat, particularly when it comes to battles. The battle system is easily the worst in the series. Only red magic is available, you can only have one Reyvateil in battle at once, and the action RPG gameplay in general just doesn't feel right for the series. From what I've seen so far, each Reyvateil only has one song, which is simply powered up repeatedly as you progress through the game.

On the positive side, everything else is about as good as ever, and the graphics are pretty nice for 3D Gust game. I haven't played the game since I made my last post about it though, as I've been busy, but I'll be putting in some hours over the weekend.

The first one is Alchemist of Ar....something right? Or am I thinking of something else? Might have to check it out!

You're thinking of Atelier Rorona. The first AT game is Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia.

Ah yes, that's exactly what I'm thinking of. I was wondering why so many people would like a sequel to an apparently average game, thank you!

Also, thinking back, if you were at all interested in the series, like a certain person I know (hint: it's not me or Ad, he'll know who he is, and he might like to dob himself in if he wants!) you would obviously have some sort of interest in the game, right? What better way than to start at the beginning, because something about the game intrigues you, so you might as well experience the entire series in order.

Having said that, there's still some copies of Ar Tonelico 1 on ebay, I think, Luke, if you were interested ... I'd recommend the first one, at least. I think it sucks you in pretty well as it's not a typical RPG ... Well, it does have typical RPG elements, like turn based battles and so on and so forth, but the setting is quite unique, and the premise is quite different, too.

Now, you're thinking of the Atelier series, made by the same people. They deal with alchemists and item creation and characters doing kooky stuff for the main part. They're like your typical light hearted RPG that doesn't take itself overly seriously.

So, the Ar tonelico series is:

Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia for the PS2
Ar tonelico: Melody of Metafalss for the PS2
Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel for the PS3

Oops, I was a bit too slow! Or longwinded, one or the other.

Anyway, yeah, I really liked the first game, I liked the second game ... for the most part ... but something is holding me back. The second game did have a lot of flaws ... I mean, a lot of sexual innuendo in amongst a lot of spelling errors and grammatical trouble. It got a bit too much for me.

Oh, and by the way, that person in question who is just about to get into the series ... well, he better make a post about the game when he gets it, detailing what he thinks.

Wow, Luke ... that's so harsh. Possibly true, but harsh. The Atelier series is pretty good, but they've apparently gone back to basics with Atelier Rorona and it's more like a HD version of their earlier titles ... or so I've heard. Atelier Totori, Rorona's sequel, apparently mixes it up by bringing a lot of the newer additions back whilst retaining the old Atelier stuff, too. Totori is one of the games I can wait to hear of a translation coming in the near future ... but I must admit that Rorona isn't something I'm dying to play over other games I have.

Oh, here's something else I found about Trails in the Sky. It's a ten minute demo/interview. Take a look.

(I'd love to watch it, but I bet that grandpa wouldn't be happy ...)

I'm liking Ar Tonelico 1 as much as when I first played a Persona game! Which means everyone needs to take their PS2 back out <_< There were a few typos so far in AT1 and some (framerate?) or lag issues everywhere, specially in battle, the animation isn't as smooth as it should be which I find odd... since it's 2D sprites but those stuff don't matter too much to me. Apart from Misha, Aurica and Shurelia the english voice acting in AT1 is a bit... not quite on the mark, mainly with Kruche and the NPCs who talk here and then (omg they are terrible XD). Lyner's voice actor sometimes misses the mark as well and feels a bit awkward at times.

Yeah I might have worded that a bit too harshly, sorry!
I meant like, I can't judge it because I haven't played it so my thoughts/impressions are a blank slate. But I've just heard from others like Gamesta in this very thread that it was average. I'll probably try it out for myself sometime in the future!

As for Ar Tonelico, I might look at it when I get through this backlog of mine and get a bit more money! Thanks for all your help Admeister and Kyle!

Just finished The Answer, funnily enough on April the 1st too. I think it was a pretty good follow up and overall conclusion of Persona 3. I didn't think Aigis was a very strong character (I mean she is a robot) so it was hard to feel much emotion or empathy towards her. With that said, I did enjoy all the other characters and surprisingly Metis too. She has a totally different personality to Aigis and in a good way. She was a fun character to interact with and use in battle.

Gameplay wise, it was pretty much just Tartarus style dungeon crawling for 95% of the game except the difficulty was turned up a few notches. Fighting the same old shadows just with a different color here and there got extremely repetitive and tedious. The lack of enemy design is my biggest dislike of the Persona series and seeing as The Answer was mostly battle and dungeon crawling, it wasn't exactly the most exciting experience.

However the story makes up for all that and I must say the last few battles as well as the final boss were as good as the endings in P3 The Journey and P4. Also the music used in the last few bosses definitely didn't disappoint, look up Heartful Cry and Darkness if you want to hear some awesome battle tracks! I hope I haven't sounded too negative because it wasn't a bad conclusion to P3. I think I've had my fill playing Persona 4 and then 3 back to back, I think it's time to start another game in the SMT series. I'm thinking about Digital Devil Saga icon_y1.gif.

I just got Rorona a couple of days ago, it seems pretty good from what I've watched. I can't really judge yet as I can't get the missus off it...first game in a while that she's living and breathing. As others said, it seems pretty light hearted. I mean the story is about saving a shop/workshop, rather than the world, haha.

On the subject of PS3 JRPG's, can anyone recommend some of the top notch ones (or personal favourites)? I've had a JRPG itch as of late and I'm looking to expand my collection. I also feel like punishing myself in terms of time consuming/hard to get trophies, and JRPG's are notorious for difficult platinums.

EDIT: Should mention that I know Resonance of Fate and Ar Tonelico Qoga 3 are some fairly well known ones, I've read comments on the latter, any recommendations for the former?

I would welcome a DDR-RPG, If TWEWY is anything to go by icon_lol.gif .

Anyway I couldn't resist any longer and continued a new game on hard for Yakuza 4. Still on part 1, just strolling around doing sub-stories and of course kicking people. icon_smile.gif

My completion rate is 7.10%, so yay, I suggest doing the sub-story with the desperate man. Love how the humour is integrated into it, also I saw an awesome move that requires a friendship with the M store manager.

So yeah fun, fun.

1. Eternal Sonata (I would totally get this first)
2. Final Fantasy XIII
3. Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (It has Shining Force, Phantasy Star, Oasis among others)

Played 360 versions of these games, but yea, try these

I've well and truly completed FFXIII, about 120 hours to platinum, haha. But I shall definitely be getting the other two, cheers for that man.

To add on to that list, I'm going to recommend......

Star Ocean: The Last Hope International

I really liked it icon_biggrin.gif Especially the climax. I picked it coming a mile away, but it was still awesome!

I've heard good things about Star Ocean, but I'd completely forgotten about adding that to my list. Thanks dude, I'll make sure to pick that up as well.

Lol. I'm the same with PS3 and 360.

Handhelds, particularly in Japan, are sadly where it is now at for good RPGs. Home consoles can't keep up.

The reason for handhelds being so popular (and the reason why I keep thinking about picking up a PSP.... but must wait...) is that 2D RPGS are where it's at. No messing around with 3D models, ugly ones at that, or having to create complex 3D worlds, it's easier with 2D. Additionally, it's easier to add substance, charm, style and creativity with 2D images than 3D models, in my opinion. That and the (handheld) hardware can't do 3D very well.

I think this one has been mentioned before, The Little Battlers, an RPG that is similar to pokemon:

A new, tiny vid has been released advertising the Japanese version. I really hope this game gets an english release.

Quote:
It’s still two months away, but Level-5 is beginning to promote The Little Battlers with TV commercials in Japan. This short video gives us another look at 2050 and the LBX world.

The Little Battlers is planned to be more than a game. Level-5 has a multi-media strategy with manga, an anime series, and plastic models. One of them comes with the PSP game, which is slated for release on May 26.

I was waiting for this as soon as the topic of the original Ar Tonelico came up. Kyle, I promise you I would be playing Ar Tonelico now but I'm the kind of guy who likes to play his games in the order of purchase and Ar Tonelico is the 7th game in my ps2 backlog pile (which includes games like Persona 4 and Viewful Joe). Trust me I would rather being playing Ar Tonelico then Phantasy Star Universe as PHU is just so bland, but I'm halfway through the story so I might as well just finish it.

Also speaking of the Grand Knights History game from Vanillaware/Marvelous. I though there next game was something to do with Greek mythology based on a picture linked out ages ago.

Jahanzeb wrote:

Odin Sphere had some excellent writing and one of the best english dubs ever!!!

True that. After all its the only reason I put up with the very repetitive gameplay in the same environments and the constant recycling of boss.

I don't suppose anyone else though about this but with the PAL version of Xenoblade being called Xenoblade Chronicles could this be a hint that there might be more in the series, if it sells well enough.
