Ive been looking into getting the program and would like to do some editing.
Im not real interested in sony vegas,
As ive watched a fair amount of AAE tuts.

There's an educational version of AE you can get that's cheaper than the regular one.
It's still a fair bit of money, but you can use it legally to make your own films and earn a profit, which they didn't allow before.
Outside of that, all of the cheap editing programs I used back in high school aren't really around anymore, or if they are I haven't seen any new versions. _________________

VirtualDub is free and powerful for editing, particularly if you learn how to use AviSynth with it.
Not sure about special fx, but there are the usual video-manipulation tools onboard VirtualDub and AVISynth.
