I'd argue that Endtroducing is a pretty major album, but I'm sure someone else could argue that Mix Master Mike's album from the same time is just as significant.
| Quote: | | And U.N.K.L.E. doesn't really have any place in a Hip Hop thread. Even on Wiki it's listed as trip hop / downtempo / electronica / trip rock. |
Trip-hop is... a dumb name for a genre that no artist (other than Shadow) wanted to be associated with. The bands that were lumped with it (Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky primarily) all considered themselves to be producing a form of hip-hop, with a much more British bent than what was coming out at the time.
Listen to the first albums by all three of those artists, and tell me it's not some kind of hip-hop. Even Dummy uses hip-hop "instrumentation" as it were (among other things).
While I'd agree that calling any U.N.K.L.E. albums hip-hop is a stretch (the first one has some very hip-hop tracks on it, but they went with more an electronic/rock sound after that), the EP I'm talking about is very different to any of their albums (it predates Shadow's time on the project, and features Tim Goldsworthy instead).
| Quote: | | Lyrics Born's solo album? Some of the Latyrx stuff before it was decent. Again, kinda "alternative" Hip Hop, which is where your tastes seem to lie. Not that there's anything wrong with that. |
Very much so, and I was gonna mention Latyrx as well, but I like Later That Day more.
I was very much what would these days be called an "indie kid" as a teenager, except that back then the music didn't suck so much, so it was actually cool to listen to it. I have pretty wide-ranging and varied music tastes to begin with, and I tend to use broader categories when talking about music.
On the other hand, I also have some Beastie Boys stuff, N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton record, Wu-Tang's 36 Chambers and some of the more "mainstream" stuff from recent times (Saul Williams, for example).
One question: What is it about Nas' Illmatic album that makes everyone go crazy? I've never heard it, and always put it in the category of "top 40 hip-hop I'd never want to listen to", but people keep raving about it and putting it on "best album ever/of the 1990s" lists, so I'm getting more and more curious about it. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

Okay, English SAC is horrendously over.
I don't mind me some old school - My music taste is diverse enough as it is, but I don't mind any of the albums suggested to me, been listening the De La the most though, seeing them living is probably why

The lyrics. The beats. The... everything?
Yeah, if you think instrumental Hip Hop albums should be included in any list of the best Hip Hop stuff ever and you don't think Illmatic should, you're, umm... alternative, as you put it. _________________

Maybe I should actually listen to it and see what the hype is all about. I guess that would be the best way to answer my question. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

Yeah, check it out. Very very heavy lyrically. It is one of the most amazing Hip Hop albums of all time but I feel like maybe it won't be great on first listen in 2011. You kinda "had to be there" - for lack of a better term. See how you go. _________________

I struggle to get into Aussie Hip Hop too. Latest Bliss N Eso isn't bad, and the Hoods are pretty good. Playing alot of Pez and whatnot on the radio nowadays.
I stuggle to find hip-hop I really enjoy nowadays. Little Brother is a big fave that aren't together anymore. I'm slowly deviating away from the real street stuff.

Oh man. Man. That's one of my favourite albums of all time.
I remember printing out the lyrics and researching all the stuff he talked about on that album.
So amazing.
In fact, I'm gonna put Poet Laureate II on right now... _________________

How we all going?
Did anyone catch DOOM? Or have the terms of his delayed gigs not been solidified yet?
Anyway, MF Doom and Thom Yorke, looking forward to that shit. _________________

Pretty sure Doom has finished his shows now? Apparently a big success, he smashed out some great tracks, and everyone was happy. _________________

^^^ Yepp, I saw him last Saturday night. Pretty awesome show, he didn't come on until 1:40am though which is a bit rediculous. Doom aside, anyone checked out Odd Future Wolf Gang? they've come out of nowhere and are definetely worth a listen - all their stuff is available for free download so you'd be doing yourself an injustice not atleast giving a few tracks a go. Pretty much all i've been listening to for the past two weeks.

Yeah. Earl is technically the best rapper. Tyler's got some decent beats. Look forward to his new album. _________________

Yeah, I'm gonna help fly the OFWGKTA flag. Fantastically refreshing hip hop -- I like to think of it as the sort of angle Def Jux was trying to take on earlier this decade, except these kids do it exceptionally well. Simple, grating, and deep production, excellent flows, ADD lyrical content, and plenty of teeth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSbZidsgMfw
Tyler, The Creator's 'Yonkers' -- quite exemplary of the OFWGKTA crew. Dope video too.
If you're into it, get on that iTunes thang and pick it up for your $1whatever. Addictive track! _________________

Ice-T is releasing a documentary called The Art of Rap. Can't wait, he interviews everyone from the old school masters to the current best.
And he puts up random pics on his Twitter. Most recent being this one:
Em wishes he had a trophy wife that looks like that.
Note: Em's wearing Illuminati insignia. _________________

Butterfingers are my fave when it comes to aus stuff. Although they've broken up now Evil Eddie is putting out some solo stuff soon and his first single sounded a lot along the same line as Butterfingers. _________________
