Hi guys, I don't really know anything about mp3 players, my brother wants one to listen to music (obviously) and podcasts, just wondering what's good out there, all I can find is outdated reviews... _________________

depends how much room you want on it, if your brother has hundreds of thousands of songs he wants constant access too then you'd probably be best with an iPod or something similiar. If he's fine with having a couple of gigs worth of music on him at any time though you could probably pick up a decent random one for $30 or so from office works.
Whatever you do though don't buy the soundwave transformer one, it sucks. _________________

Check this site for everything apart from iPods:
http://anythingbutipod.com/
You can compare and search for media players on this site based on storage, screen size, supported formats, etc. _________________

I'd still recommend an ipod. Especially if he really wants to listen to podcasts. Yes yes, apple might be the most evil corporation on the planet, but you can't deny their design is just awesome. _________________

CD? Cassettes?
I've completely revamped my music collection and gone retro. I have all my music played live by my own troupe of minstrels.
You ever heard the bassline form Battery played on a lute?

Lute's are too mainstream, I prefer The Final Countdown as grunted by paleolithic cave men. _________________

The tape deck in my car warps everything I play in it. I can roll down the main street with my arm out the window and my 4" subs blasting out gibberish the likes you have never heard. _________________

Honestly, I'd be looking at the brand 'creative' or 'creative Labs', they've been the king of MP3 players for years. Awesome equilisation options, great value, and aren't a cheap yum-cha brand. Plus you don't get a 50c pair of headphones when you buy one of their units, unlike the iPod. They've been around for years even before the iPod, and know their s*** when it comes to mp3 players. Check out the Zen series of Creative mp3 players as a starting point. Newer Zen models may be worth avoiding though, as there's a heap of extra features like 2MP camera, GPS and wireless LAN capability, a couple of models back should be perfect for you, a much better sounding unit that's cheaper than an iPod.
How much are you looking at spending?

Sometimes, things are popular because they are good.
Also, I've never met someone who bought a Creative MP3 player who didn't have to return it six months later because it stopped working. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

So true.
However, sometimes things are popular because people are idiots and sheep. More concerned with aesthetics than functionality.
All I want is dedicated volume controls and support for lossless formats.
yes, I own 2 iPods >_< _________________ Da Bessssss

All I want is masses of storage space, tbh. 160GB iPod Classic does me fine. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

You can't argue the fact they're good, actually, excellent in design, but that's the only main appeal, they're not good at anything else. All personal opinion of course.
I've had the opposite experience with Creative units, have gone through 3 different models, only reason I say three is for upgrading. This was the first beast:
$800 second hand!
Then used the Zen series after that and never had any faults. Haven't used them for a couple of years though, but the equilisation options and other features were always superior to Apple back when I was using them. May be worth checking out forums for reliabiality on the newer units, I really can't see how they're faulty, the company has been around for 7 years before the first iPod.
The next thing I'd be researching is the 'iRiver' brand, another player with great audio options.

Yes, I have a 160GB for the same reason. Need a lot more space though, I've been removing stuff for months to put new stuff on. Apple need to step it up. _________________

From what I hear, the main reason the classic tops out at 160GB is that nobody makes 1.5" drives in higher capacities anymore because it's actually cheaper to make Flash.
The Classic is on life-support until they can introduce a 256GB Touch for a market-acceptable price.

They're also very good at playing music. You should try one sometime!
And yeah, a few friends of mine had those Creative monsters. They all had to replace them, while my 20GB iPod soldiered on. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

I also strongly recommend Creative, though personally, depending on how much space he requires, 99% of phones hold SD cards up to 32GB, get one of those and you're laughing.

@the dude two posts above:
Actually in most tests with dedicated audio analysers iPod's DO come out of it fairly well. I'm fairly anti iPod but I wouldn't fault the quality of their internals.
Their headphones are ****, their audio processors are actually pretty good.
