Yep. Not a thing to do with 3D as in "OMG YOUR MOVIES ARE IN 3D!!!" They're asking for people that have worked with 3D graphics hardware of all kinds.
Given that they're asking for someone with knowledge in physics, that's a safe bet that they're looking at sticking a GPGPU in there.
If they're only hiring now for someone to see a console through from conception to completion, I'd be surprised to hear anything by year's end. Maybe early next year. _________________

Yeah, system R&D usually beings pretty quickly, and if Microsoft are still conceptualising at this point I think we're in for quite a wait. All three console developers have said they want this generation to last as long as possible anyway. I know some want new hardware, but the next systems are still quite awhile away, and if we get info on any new hardware I assume it will come from Nintendo first. _________________

3D graphics.
That thing Quake and Mario 64 helped popularise back in 1996. _________________

I think we will hear from Nintendo first in 2012. Nothing from MS or Sony until 2013-2014.

I'd just say : buy a good pc.
but then exclusives. I do think PS4 will be better for exclusive titles. _________________

That's the second smellovision joke I've heard today kartanym.
I'm calling it. A portable 3D hand-held. When that happens go back to this thread and proclaim me master of the future.

Finally Xbox720 in Xmas 2012. Calling it now. Why else would there be a definate lack of exclusives showing up for the 360 now? I truly think they are being worked on for the 720.
Its just my guess but I have a good gut feeling. I dont think Sony will launch until 2014 for some reason. _________________

If they call the console the XBOX 720 it will officially be the stupidest console name ever. _________________

Good point, but where do they go from now? Xbox 3? Xbox 361? Xbox Z? Xbox C? 3box? Xbox 480?
A weird naming choice for their second console is going to make naming the third even more weird. _________________

Microsoft are concentrating on cornering the casual market with kinect atm. I'd be surprised if they even announce a new console by xmas 2012. Unless kinect bombs in the meantime...

360 was their second console. And they chose 360 because it was competing with the PS3, so XBOX2 would have sounded like a lower machine. Maybe they can use Nintendo's idea of naming consoles after bowel movements, and call it the XBOX POO? _________________

I think 720 has already been ruled out, apparently it would give consumers the impression that it is only capable of 720p graphics.

Sounds like they're still coming up with a concept to me. Given how long development takes, I'd think this will still be 3 years away.
Nintendo, on the other hand, are capable of releasing a new console at any time. We only heard about the 3DS what, 6 months ago? I think there could be a new Nintendo home console next year. However, I don't think it will have any real advantage power-wise over the 360/PS3. I think it might be like a Wii but will have caught up to the competition in terms of console power. Maybe have some more powerful motion peripheral.

About time new console news hits the headlines. Lets hope MS design a console for the future and not the current day, otherwise it will be using out of date tech on release.

If you were to go buy a brand new top of the line computer right now, it'd be out of date tech before you got it home.

Not exactly but I get your point. That said, it wouldn't be a couple of years old. A bit of foresight wouldn't go astray. Atleast Sony played their hand right with using BluRay.

Sony were the ones developing blu-ray though, and pushing for it to be the new standard. It's not like Microsoft released an out dated console with the 360. It's aged quicker then hte PS3 sure but it's still lasted 6 years and is going strong. _________________

I think there were simple things both Microsoft and Sony could've and should've done for their respective consoles; added more memory. That in itself would've made a big difference.

honestly I don't think there's much more sony could have done. The PS3 was already ridiculously priced at launch, more memory would have just driven the price up or made then lose more money. Didn't it only just start becoming profitable last year? _________________

Sony sold the system at a huge loss, as did Microsoft, and adding more memory would have jacked the price or the loss even further. As expensive as it was, the PlayStation 3 was a 'good deal' in terms of the tech you were getting relative to the complete lack of profit made by Sony. _________________

I'm not knocking the PS3, I know all too well of the development cost and tech cost that went into that. Still, like the 360, it could have used some more memory (and a better graphics processor). I wonder how much more cost would've been involved in extra memory back then?
