So if I'm reading this right, there IS time to play games, but only after you complete your work and revisions? Hopefully I don't have TOO much work to do for awhile then, I'd like to finish Star Ocean before I knuckle down.
Thanks for the advice and stuff, I really need to learn Time Management.

edit: I babbled on too long. Basically as long as you do 8-10 hours of study per week (inc. contact) and are genuinely interested in the material you'll be in the top ten percent. That leaves a few hours per day for gaming.
Though you will be in trouble if you get a girlfriend.

So perhaps for the first Semester, cut off gaming unless you have completed your work/revisions. It can be easy to overestimate how much time you need to do things. Once you have started to get a feel for things, then modify your gaming times to some more comfortable levels.
I suspect most people quit in their first year partially because they don't discipline themselves enough and drown in deadlines. When I did my degree, about half the people in my course quit in the first year. |

Don't let us overwhelm you though. A lot of people drop out because they feel overwhelmed and those assessment dates look sooo close together.
There is always enough time though, and if not, drop down to part time, not rushing and finishing is better than rushing and not. That advice will hopefully allow you to circumvent the panic attacks I developed

I'm not sure of your RPG collection, but judging by some of your posts I think you would love "Torchlight" on PC. Currently $24 (New) at EB games (not sure if its a Sydney only deal). As for PS3, have you played Eternal Sonata?

Uni moves at a very break neck pace, so from personal experience I would say to really cut back on gaming (especially RPGs) during your first year. It's important because you want to lay down a really solid foundation and focus on making a smooth transition into Uni life. Once you establish that foundation and get used to this new lifestyle, you can easily work gaming around it.
It's very hard at first, i was constantly anxious and freaked out. I didnt think Id play games again, but once the first year is done you everything about Uni becomes 'routine' and you have better control over it. I was able to review RPGs for PALGN during my 3rd year so it's really just about adapting to the uni life.
I just started my honours program and for the past 2 weeks I havent turned on my consoles. I was able to squeeze a few quick sessions of Sonic, but yea, it's a whole different league and on top of this im working as a tutor and admin. but yea...just trying to adapt to it at this stage ha.

Also, depends on what marks youre looking for, I always aimed for HDs ha ha

Sounds like I will have to cut down a bit then! Which I'm cool with, I tend to always go to bed and play DS for a bit and my timetable is pretty awesome so I could easily fit in 10 hours per week....Unless you mean per subject in which case that's gonna be hard.
But yeah obviously my 5 hours a day is going to disappear , but I can easily live with 1-3. Like I did during High School. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Depends on the course you're doing and the type of university you chose, like I've learnt entire units 2 days before the final exam and walked out with D. As in I hadn't taken a look at the first lecture notes yet before then. I don't think you can pull that off if you're in the Big 5 universities (ah why did I transfer out of university of western australia for some easy and **** uni) :/

You totally can 
Depends mainly on the subject.
Don't let us scare you though, you will have time to still game. Back in the dark ages when I was in first year the only study I really did was to go to class and speed read on the train. You'll eventually develop a feel for what is needed and more importantly, what you want out of the course.
These days I only do about 6-7 hours per week because I've developed an illness but a if you are a normal full-time student, if you do pull the ten hours per subject per week (which includes everything you do for the subject), it should work out at 8 hours per day (over a 5 day work week).
8 hours study, 8 hours rest, 8 hours leisure time.
That's what our unions fought for back in the day, your quality grinding time.
Also there are insane holidays.

D is a pass right? I've never got a D in my life. I'm doing Bachelor of Education Primary, so it's gonna be a bit easier than my friend's course who is doing chemical engineering, but still no cake walk I guess!
I like this 8 hour plan though, I'll aim for that!
But still, guess I chose a bad time to buy Dragon Age Origins and Pokemon White .

P3P is getting a local release? [/latetotheparty] Might actually pick it up (didn't have a PSP at the time it was originally released).
Still need to import Radiant Historia, the time travel mechanics look great and the overall feel makes it seem like the kind of game that will have an effect on my studies <_< (So perhaps I should wait..)
Also, a small piece of trivia on Skies: Did you know that Vigoro (the womanizer general) is voiced by Charles Martinet? XD

That's about right. The grades go like this (at RMIT, at least):
P = pass (50-59%)
C = credit (60-69%)
D = distinction (70-79%)
HD = high distinction (80-100%)

Oh I thought you meant D as in 50%. I have gone my whole life getting D and HD then!
Just another off-topic question though.....How do we know if we have HW? He didn't say anything in the lecture about it and I've no idea where to check for it.
And to bring it on topic, Dragon Age came today, to taunt me most likely......Since I can't touch it for awhile.

HW? As in homework? Uni has compulsory homework? Depends on the course I guess =P HD is too hard for me, the last unit I did was advanced business analysis and design, I got HD in all the assignments then during the final exam I ran out of time to think creatively about 1 pizza delivery business process question and finished up on 78% -_-

Luketheman you are doing the same course as me.
I'm 2nd year, fit in quite a bit of gaming last year. It just depends what else you do, girlfriend, sports, job.
I try not to kill myself so play sport 1-2 nights a week and work one big day a week. If my social life is slow I've got a decent amount of time for games, if it's busy then not a lot.
Although DS for a cheeky 30-40 minutes before bed is great.

Having good marks can be a good thing as you probably already have a good idea of how to study and manage your time, as well as some idea of how to research and write essays.

At uni, you never have homework and you always do. Most lecturers (and tutors) won't set homework except some sympathetic souls in your first year. They expect you to go over the material from class and figure out what you need to know and learn and then do it. Self-directed learning my lecturers like to call it, but my campus is an arrogant bunch. You'll also have assignments to complete - don't expect any in-class time for them, including group projects, beyond an outline of the assignment.
Doing education, your lecturers and tutors are probably a nice bunch who'll help you out if you need it, but you'll have to ask for their help. They'll simply be too busy to recognise drowning students.
One advantage of fewer contact hours is that you need to be at uni less. While that doesn't mean less work, it does give you more flexibility as to what you do with your time. But, when you go out on placements and actually start teaching classes, you won't have enough time to breathe, let alone game. Your career path isn't very compatible with free time, especially for the first year or so after graduation. Teachers work very hard.
I travel around 2 hours one way to get to uni and what with that travel, classes, study and spending time with my partner I'm barely gaming at all at the moment. That's okay, I still consider myself a gamer, but it won't kick back in again until the semester break. I'm used to having quite the backlog, so it's not much of a change for me. I think most importantly, I know that my games are there if I want to time-out and play them.

I played Torchlight when it was released on PC. Not a bad game, definitely needed co-op though. As for Eternal Sonata, I played that on release on the 360. I actually thought it was a decent RPG (a lot of people seem to dislike it).
I might give Bulletstorm a whirl before I replay Castlevania Symphone of the Night. After that, I may restart Demons Souls.

Don't scare the guy too much Don't worry, you'll learn to walk before you run. Like anything, education is a very broad field, and you are still at the start of your degree. There are many options that will become available, some for those who want to push the envelope and some for those who want to balance life as well. Part time and casual placements exist for a reason.
As for the workload, I don't know much about your field but in my experience just about every degree (with a few exceptions) has a fairly equal workload after graduation. Each field also has it's own stressors that are unique, but also has things that are easier than in other fields. It's a lot of work, but you won't be losing sleep or anything .

I haven't posted much for a while. Over the last couple of weeks, I've finished Final Fantasy X on the PS2 and all of the Dragon Age Origins DLC. So now I'm ready for Dragon Age 2, just have to wait for it to be shipped from Ozgameshop.
Currently hooked on playing Dragon Quest VI on the DS This is as awesome as I thought it was going to be, everything about these games just draws you in completely and won't let you go. Why can't Square Enix do this with new Final Fantasy games? The Dragon Quest games just get better and better while the Final Fantasy games just get worse  While playing in the casino in Dragon Quest yesterday, this happened:
I had been having a horrible run at the casino mainly only winning 1500, 3000 or 6000, with a couple of 30000. I was getting close to giving up on getting a nice amount to buy prizes with when I did a spin and the above popped up  Oh, if anyone is playing this, be sure to chat to your party members after you talk to NPCs.
I'm still playing Tales Of Eternia but I haven't touched it for a little bit, I think I'm about halfway through the game, I'll be returning to it soon. Geez so many new games to play now, got Pokemon Black & White (yes, both) coming soon, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Dragon Age 2 and all of the recent DS and PSP RPGs I bought need to be played as well. It's a good thing I'll not be buying much while saving for my PS3 soon....maybe I'll be able to get through some of my backlog without adding more to it.

There are a couple other small differences.
