Hey all,
I would like to request suggestions, reviews, and colourful language on the topic of good games that offer local (read: single/splitscreen) co-op (and/or adversarial) play - the focus is on consoles, although feel free to talk about PC too.
To start the ball rolling, I am looking for a good game along the lines of Mashed - or anything that similarly offers good, fun, four player action that can be easily picked up by casual players. Hopefully on PS3/360.
I tried the Demo for TNT Racers on PSN last night, and that had a similar feel to it but without the depth of handling/shunting gameplay - plus the powerups seemed a little shallow. For a low price point it might be worth investigation though.
Thought please? _________________

awesome thread Karai, love me some local co-op.
Gears of war's campaign modes in co-op are brilliant (Though only two player)
And though the game didn't get good reviews, Army of Two with another person is a great game.
There's also the games like Castle Crashers/ Scott Pilgrim etc a plenty on arcade. Did all of Castle Crashers with three people and it was great fun.
But all time fave co-op game is the original crystal chronicals on the cube. It takes a lot to get going but if you can get multiple people prepared to put in some serious hours and all with a GBA and a link cable that game is amazing. _________________

Oh, Castle Crashers is awesome fun with a horde of cohorts - and Scott Pilgrim is as good as any of the old-school beat 'em ups. Truth.
I'm more on the lookout for smaller, more casual type gameplay experiences. Something where rounds last only a couple of minutes or so, allowing for relatively quick rotation of players (assuming there will be more than four players) - also light on story, etc. allowing for drunken tomfoolery.
Also, seriously, anyone with an XBOX (old) and four controllers should get Mashed and play it with mates and booze. Best ever. _________________

Blur is a Mario Kart styled racer in terms of powerups, but it has licenced cars and is 4-player split-screen. Have had plenty of fun with this one in split-screen. Personally I find the game to be pretty damn good, moreso than what reviews are suggesting. You'll find the graphics a bit dated after playing titles like bulletstorm though. Versus modes only, no co-op.
And there's always Halo: Reach, which I'm sure you probably know of though. The firefight mode is crazy fun and it's always good taking a group of 4 online for the 4v4 team deathmatches. Contrary to Benza, I just couldn't stand Army of Two in terms of co-op, and neither will you after loving a game like Bulletstorm. I just found it too sluggish.
Kane and Lynch is definitely worth checking out with todays prices, surely it can be found for $10 or so, I liked it more than Army of Two as a co-op title.
Lara Croft: Guardian of Light is one of the best local co-op titles for the arcade in recent memory.
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 also has 4 player local co-op and is a pretty decent brawler, especially if you love your superheroes, though when you are all drunk you'll have a hard time figuring out where your character is oi-screen.
Earthworm Jim HD also has 4 player local co-op, though I'm yet to try it. Sure you're well versed on what this is about so should be an easy decision on whether you'll enjoy it or not.
If you consider you and your friends fans of South Park, South Park: Let's Go Tower Defense Play! is great for a laugh, though it could have been a bit better.
Worms/Worms2 'Nuff said really.
Anybody know when the new Timesplitters game is out? Keep an eye out for that too, as personally I find TS to be the pinnacle of fun for FPS games in a split screen environment.

I love Timesplitters, but last I heard Crytek had the rights, and only slight interest in utilising them I'm hoping 2K can get the rights, they'd do the series justice for sure.
Speaking of 2K, Borderlands is good co-op. It shouldn't be too bad for casual players, there's a fair bit of depth there but as long as you're not underlevelled horribly you can really jump in and out at any time. Game of the year edition is pretty cheap now, too.

Fifa has 4 player co-op. 2 on 2 matches are fun. Fighting games are quick and easy and you could just go for the button mashers to make it more fun. Killzone 3 from what I heard has a good local co-op. For drunkness though just put in rockband or something.

if you want button mashy fighters I wouldn't go past MVC 3, there's more depth to it but it's really easy to hit buttons and do cool shit. Also being able to play as Ironman, spiderman and wolverine is always a plus. _________________

Sadly at this point there are no plans to make a new TS unless Crytec UK know something we don't.
TS4 was scrapped when Free Radical closed down. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.

Check out Splint Cell conviction, brilliant co-op which has a different story / missions to the single player.

As soon as I saw that you'd posted I thought of this and that I should have mentioned it.
This game will either forge your friendship in steel or kill it outright. _________________

One time I got drunk and played Lips. From what I recall, it was a lot of fun, and I woke up the next day with a healthy boost to my GS. Bonus!
Totally not the type of game I'd feel comfortable playing sober (got nothing to blame the bad singing on when you're sober), so it was a refreshing change from my normal gaming diet of shooters and racing games.
I reckon give Lips a go. Otherwise, anything kinect, or maybe that co-op 2.5D Mario... they'd be my next suggestions.

^ I've just been informed it's heaps better than singstar, which is apparently more aimed at kids(?). Only thing is, the music might not be to everyone's tastes. I think I mostly just sang Be Good Johnny by Men at Work whenever it was my go.

Haha the crappier the music the better. My best singstar memory is me and a mate so drunk we had to lean on eachother so we could stand up screaming the lyrics to wannabe by spice girls at the top of our lungs at some guys party. _________________
