I am shocked and appalled, Nintendo - I would never have expected you to do this.

Also: Cannot wait.

I'm surprised they haven't just rehashed Mario 64 again for it ala the DS and Wii VC releases. Maybe that's just a matter of time though.

Looks a lot like SMG. I should really finish that sequel =\

I'm not sure why people aren't more surprised, to be honest. The idea of a new Mario game isn't surprising, but the idea of it being a new 3D Mario in the style of Super Mario Galaxy should be more interesting. That said, it fits the 3DS's capability much more than a 2.5D Mario would.

What's surprising is that it isn't a launch title.

Do my eyes spy a Tanooki tail? That's sold me already! Good old Nintendo playing on my Super Mario 3 nostalgia.

It actually appears to be more '3D Mario in the style of 2D Mario', what with the raccoon tail and the small mario. Which also sounds awesome.

It doesn't matter what it is though, I want it.

How is that surprising? Games take a LONG TIME to develop. Other Nintendo launch titles on handhelds have been ports, and the last Nintendo launch title on a console was a port too, so it's more surprising that Zelda OoT 3D wasn't a launch title than this.

Edit: ^ holy hell, I didn't notice the small Mario. If that's the case, then that's awesome, because I've always wanted small/big Mario in a 3D Mario game.

Wow a Mario game with question mark blocks, goombas and coins! If it's not set in space like Galaxy I hope it at least retains some of the crazy gravity elements.

Why would a fully 3D mario game on a console that's entirely built around the concept of 3D be surprising to anyone?

Well, you've got a point, but they've never made a new 3D Mario game on a handheld before. It's always been side-scrolling, with Mario 64 DS being the only exception.

The screens of the game certainly look promising.
It kinda looks like SMG and NSMBW had a baby.

Definitely going to pick it up, I haven't bought a new release Mario game that has disappointed me.

When I first read the title of this I had the sinking feeling that it was going to be a Super Mario 64 remake and didn't have any interest. But I clicked on the article and looked at the screens and then changed to immediate want. Seems like the most natural fit in the world and it could end up being very spellbinding indeed if the gravity elements are integrated into it a'la Galaxy.

It's surprising that they're not launching with one of their stronger franchises to help drive initial sales. It's only my opinion, but the launch titles are pretty lackluster so I'm left waiting till OoT3D or SM3D hit before I grab me a 3DS.

Games take a long time to develop, but it's not like Nintendo only heard about the 3DS just now.

That would make sense if Nintendo Hadn't sold out already in Japan. The 3DS is selling itself well enough at the moment that Nintendo doesn't need one of its big franchises to back it up. Besides, Nintendo has been talking up their support for 3rd parties and dropping Mario or Zelda on them at launch wouldn't be very pro-3rd party

As pom said, they dont need to drive sales stronger than they already are. Its nice to think from a consumer perspective that there will be huge titles at launch, and I was sure Nintendo would get the OoT remake up as a launch game, but from Nintendo's perspective they dont need it. If they can launch out the gate as hard as they already have, with such a lackluster launch list, why launch with big titles? Why not save those big titles for later on, spreading out software, and using that software to push even more sales?

End of the day it's business, and all Nintendo really needed was Nintendogs.
