So, just playing a game and all of a sudden the Playstation freaks out and turns off. Then the red light begins to flash. So hold down the "on" button and it starts up again, turns green, then i see some yellow, then it goes back to the flashing light. So, i'm freaking, any suggestions. And no, its well past its warranty. Thanks in advance. Also it appears if i turn the whole system off for a while then try again i get it starting up again (without seeing anything on the screen but blue light) on system, before it goes back to flashing red light. icon_sad.gif

You have the YLOD (Yellow Light of Death - probably caused by overheating of the console due to being in a confined area). Solution: Buy a slim model icon_smile.gif
You can get it fixed locally for about $100 (give or take depending on who you go to); which, if fixed, should fix your PS3 long enough to take back home and back up your game saves.
Then, buy a Slim model the next day and transfer your game saves to the slim.

I had a 60GB model that got YLOD 3 times in 2 months. Its just not worth keeping if it stuffs up once, because you'll probably have troubles in the not too distant future and need to get it repaired again.

Or you can fix it with a hairdryer. Mine was still working weeks after I fixed it (it might still be, I don't know), though it was only on for a couple of hours over those weeks. It's definitely not a permanent solution, but it lets you back it up to a new PS3, if you choose to buy one.

Just in case you are new to the YLOD, here is a PALGN forum link to a Yellow Light of Death thread http://palgn.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=29828&start=0. Has people experiences and possible short fixes etc.

Thanks everyone, i reckon i'm going to try and get it fixed and have my saved games backed up onto the PC, from there, if and by the sounds of it inevitablly when it comes down with the yellow light of death again, i'll just be grabbing me a slim model.

Put it in the empty PS3 box upside down and blow a hairdryer on it for a certain amount of time, might be 20 or so minutes. It seems to work for a lot of people, and worked fine for me, it's obviously not a permanent solution but it's a LOT better than paying $100 or so to repair it just to copy your save games over.
