So recently I tried making a wrestling thread, but deleted it in fear of embarassment and ridicule for essentially watching a show that we all know is fake.

But then The Rock made a (somewhat) surprised return to the WWE brand in recent weeks, and now I simply don't care anymore. It simply must be discussed amongst us PALGN wrestling fanatics like Matth3w, Jahanzeb, TheAnswer, Chickenplucka, Big Pete and the like.

Over the past couple of weeks, with Buttmouth's/my post in the funny links thread and other member's posts in the 'what are you watching' thread, it seems more fans have come out of the woodwork in the past few weeks and more people watch it than I was originally led to believe.

It's one of the highest rated shows (other than real lol sport (lol)) in America, and is also one of the longest running. There's many PPV subscribers in Australia so it only seems fair to have a General wrastlin' thread amongst PALGN to talk about all things wrastling. From the 'Attitude Era v2.0 - The Elderly years' of TNA, the "He's using HYPNOSIS!" laughable CZW, or the 'Cena and Orton Merchandise Hour' of the WWE. If you have something to say about any of the current events, feel free to post it in here jabronis!

This tread will be plagued with spoiler tags so I want to make it a rule that there are no spoiler tags in this thread. Enter at your own risk, or just wait until you're up to date and have watched the latest ep before waltzing in and laying the opinion smackdown.

So, the first major questions...

1. What are people's predicitons on The Rock and his involvment in Wrestlemania?

Some people think that he's just back for Wrestlemania, but from some of the things he's said, I reckon it's looking more and more like he's back for good, which would mean great things for wrestling and would start to turn things around for the WWE. They played it well when Rock initially left by Cena being the one to do the trash-talking, they knew he'd be the star if/when the Rock decided to come back. It's not as if he's got a million movies in the pipeline, he's done what he's wanted to do with movies. He was always better as a heel, and what better way to come back by going straight for Cena.

2. people's thoughts on Elimination Chamber?

I thought it was one of the better PPV's in recent memory, even if the results were all heavily predictable (much morso than other PPVs) The elimination chamber matches were mostly well done with a few genuine "holy s***" moments from the crowd.

3. Wrestlemania predictions?

Cena beats Miz, Rock going for Cena straight after taking the title, starting a fresh feud with Rock and Cena on the Raw show.

Oh and Matth3w, I ended up watching the TNA PPV, and didn't really like the roster enough to stick with it (as in in their weekly show). Hardy match was cool, but lacked the WTF moments of his early WWE days. Dudley Boys feud was kinda cool, but didn't like the whole 'custody of the kids' and 'custody of the wife' stories attached to them.

Hopefully a few of you are into it as much as I have been lately, and this thread can stay alive (at least for a little while).

4. Favourite Theme song?

I listen to some weird s*** like psytrance and hardstyle, but damn it I love me some wrastlin' theme songs too. Faves for me would be Cactus Jack, oldschool Edge and Christian (you think you know me) and from the present, Dre Mcintyre.

EDIT: Oh My God! Wrestlemania is shaping up to be pretty, well, aaaaaaaaaaawwwwweeeeeeeeessooooooooommmmeeeeeee, as the latest Raw episode attests to. WWE is slowly beginning to regain its former glory, with another announcement.

To be honest I go through stages of watching wrestling and then periods of not watching wrestling. At the moment I'm in one of those times when I'm not watching wrestling but I still read up on results and info on my fave wrestlers. Surprising to myself I seem to read up on TNA more then the WWE. Though with the recent return of The Rock to the WWE and his involvement in Wrestlemania I think this might be the catalyst for me to get back into watching the WWE. If he does indeed make a longer return after WM then that will definitely bring me back to see his entertaining promos. I just have to wonder how much moolah Vince has shelled out for The Rock to come back. A few old faces have come back it seems. There have been a few people come back recently such as Trish Stratus, Triple H back from his movies, Undertaker back from his injuries. Can Vince get anyone else to come back or even just come to the WWE?

On the iPhone now, so it would take to long to discuss mrcools questions typing on this, but will in the morning.

Look forward to talk wrestling with the 6 or so people on here icon_biggrin.gif

I don't get the stigma about it being fake - 99% of the fanbase knows it's fake, in fact it's just like any other tv show to us. Really wrestling gets a rough deal from a lot of people.

1. What are people's predicitons on The Rock and his involvment in Wrestlemania?

I'd imagine it's going to be like an extended version of Austin/Hogan's role at Wrestlemania XXI. He'll appear in a couple of segments and then involve himself in the Cena match where I expect he'll put Cena over like Tyson did for Austin by lifting his arm after the match.

Quote:
2. people's thoughts on Elimination Chamber?

Good show, thought the SD EC chamber was one of the best chamber matches in it's history and the Raw equivalent was relatively enjoyable too. Kofi was a good opener and Lawler vs. Miz was a well told match. Also glad to see Christian and Trish Stratus back - will be interesting to see what roles they play at Mania.

My only criticism is how predictible the results were, not that I had an issue with them. Just wish the show had of been promoted better.

Quote:

3. Wrestlemania predictions?

I expect the card to be...

John Cena vs. The Miz: Cena Wins

Alberto Del Rio vs. Edge: ADR Wins

Triple H vs. The Undertaker: Taker Wins

Randy Orton vs. CM Punk: Orton Wins

Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan: Bryan Wins

Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes: Mysterio Wins

Money In The Bank Match: John Morrison Wins

Trish Stratus and Kelly Kelly vs. Laycool: Stratus and Kelly Win

Quote:
4. Favourite Theme song?

All Time: Corporate Ministry - Was basically the only good thing about the faction.

Current: Oh geez um...I'll go Zach Ryder's theme, suits his gimmick well.

I'm the same with your predictions for the Del Rio match, and with all of this old school stuff that seems to be happening, I'm hoping for an Edge/Christian tag team reunion, there's just no ring to '13 time champ' for Edge, there's no way they can keep using him in singles title matches. Tag teams are completely boring, glad to see Koslov and Santino out of the spotlight after the PPV.

Time for WWE to let Morrison and some of the others shine.

i don't really want to get this thread side-tracked, but since it started on this line of discussion, i thought i'd add my $0.02.

speaking as someone who isn't a fan of wrestling, the "it's fake" excuse never really made sense to me either. i mean i'm sure there are fans out there who do believe it's real, but they usually outgrow that by the time they hit double digits. (this isn't intended as an insult, quite the opposite when you think about it.)
fair enough if they don't enjoy any form of fiction (and i do know people like this), but if you do watch any sort of "made up" stuff, then i don't really see the difference.

I just don't find it entertaining - just like i don't find Two and a Half Men entertaining, doesn't mean i....

actually that might not be the best example, as i have been known to rage about the inexplicable popularity of 2.5 Men, so i'll just let you all get back to it before i really go off-topic...

Long time wrestling fan, don't watch it as often as i used to. I found it getting weaker (pandering to a G rated audience more), so i started not paying as much attention as i used to.

Actually funny how it started out, i had seen some of it when i was younger... never really paid too much attention to it. When i started paying attention i started to love it and get into the characters, play the videogames (WWF WrestleFest @ Time Zone, WrestleMania Challenge on NES etc). WrestleMania IV was the first WWF video i hired from the video shop, of course i only hired 1 part of it (split on two seperate tapes), so i had to wait awhile to watch the half i had missed.

It's funny how it worked out, i lost interest around the mid 90's. I got back into it towards the late 90's (as the Stone Cold era was taking place), after renting WWF: War Zone on the playstation. It had me intrigued and i wanted to explore the era of the WWF i had not seen before.

Converted once again, i caught up on the years i had missed (had a great ppv marathon including Royal Rumble + WrestleMania!!). From then on i had stuck with it, purchased lots of merchandise - mainly just the ppv videos + dvds, magazines, books on wrestlers, shirts and video games (Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth = still my favorite wrestling game and hasn't been topped yet).

Demolition, Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan & Stone Cold Steve Austin - some of my favorite themes.

Favorite ppv: WrestleMania 15 is my all time favorite, loved the matches and how the storylines wrapped up or had an extra twist to them.

Other sentimental favorite's include: WrestleMania 4. 19, 20, 22 (i also have a soft spot for 18.... mainly for The Rock - Hogan match!).
Royal Rumble's 97, 98, 2000.

Isn't his role that of a 'Guest Host'? What exactly is a 'Guest Host'? Is that like a GM? I haven't read the RAW Spoilers, however, RAW is on today so I'll tune in to see if he is there giving another promo to hype WMXVII, and hopefully give some more insight to his role.
Sadly, I doubt he's going to be here after Mania; and I don't think he'll get in the ring {despite being in awesome shape}. Special referee for the Miz/Cena match maybe? Maybe cost Cena the match against Miz, cos of all the trash talk Cena has said to him in the past.

mrcool37 wrote:

Meh. Whats an 'Elimination Chamber' or 'Hell in a Cell' or TLC PPV these days without blood? *Sigh*

I didn't watch the PPV, however, I watched the RAW chamber match on YouTube yesterday and it was OK I guess. I feel that even though people want Morrison to be rocketed to the moon, his time will come ala Jeff Hardy. WWE slowly built Hardy up from late 08 until December 2009 when he finally won the WWE Title at Armageddon. I feel that's what they're doing with Morrison. Him winning the #1 contendership here would've been far too soon, but his time will come.

TBH, I really couldn't care less. I'll be ordering it anyway, even if it will be abysmal with only one good match on the card like the past 2 years, simply because it's Wrestlemania. icon_biggrin.gif

If they are planting seeds for a Cena/Rock match, after WM would not be the time to do it - unless it culminates at Summerslam, the second biggest PPV; as this match alone is Wrestlemania worthy ala Hogan/Rock, Austin/Rock, Hogan/Warrior, Hogan/Andre etc.

Lol, I see you watched 'Against All Odds' huh?
TNA I'll admit is in a bit of a slump right now, and has been for a few months. The Jarrett/Angle 'custody battle' is by far the worst thing going on ATM, but sadly is getting the most TV time. Team 3D splitting up and feuding is what no one wants to see anyway; and as for Jeff - TNA fans speculate that because of the lighter travelling schedule, these older wrestlers tend not to work a match as hard simply because they can't be bothered, and know they can get away with it - Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, RVD are a few examples. Also, without the WWE machine behind them, and only performing in front of 1200 people in the iMPACT! zone, doesn't really give them the awesome factor like back in the day.

Easily, and I mean easily Edges' Metalingus by Alterbridge.
Mizs' theme is a far behind second place. icon_smile.gif

That's basically how I see it Obs - Wrestling fans are really no worse than Sci Fi or Soap Opera fans, albeit their tv shows are generally no where near as sophisticated.

On that note and on XtremeXfactor's point, what got you interested in wrestling?

People that bag wrestling for being fake are idiots. They think the majority of us fans think that it's real and don't know it's "scripted." They alwasy think they are SO smart when they point out that wrestling is fake.

We watch wrestling the same way women watch soap opera's.

Anyway mini rant over.

I was excited when Booker T came back.

I knew beforehand that the Rock was the host of Wrestlemania but I was still happy as hell when I watched his return.I had chills and I practically felt like a kid again.

So anyone disappointed that Sting didn't sign with WWE, and that the Undertaker was the 21/02/11 surprise?

But Undertaker wasn't the surprise, they heavily alluded to it with the promos, to make sure that no one really suspected HHH, that was the true surprise.

But, they showed his trailer for his crap movie 2 weeks ago, so it was only a matter of time as well.

Sting will tarnish his name if he ever signed. He's the only major iconic wrestler that I can think of that hasn't really appeared on WWE (since the buy-out at least).

Well that's lame. As scripted as everything is, I like to think that these stars stay half true to their words.

Rock: "I'm back and I'm never going away" except you're pissing off after only 2 appearances, and will probably make a third when eventually announced as a Hall of Fame nomination.

Another thing pissing me off is WWE Smackdown in general. I generally like the roster more than Raw, but half the time it's just promo's for the Raw show. Nearly 30 minutes of this week was replays of last weeks special announcement, and Cena's response to the Rock. Lame, and I feel sorry for anybody that buys tickets to their shows, only to have to sit and watch this drivel that they saw on TV 4 days prior.

The same people that attend Smackdown, also get to watch the NXT and Superstars shows aswell, as they're taped before Smackdown (or after....can't remember), so it's like 4 hours of wrestling. So they kinda get their money's worth....

Well not the entire Superstars show, but at least the taping of 1 or 2 matches.

They also get a dark match before (generally with a trial for a rookie) and after (a big main event match) after the show.

Still, I prefer the live events where you're getting good matches with a decent length and the wrestlers actually acknowledge the crowd.

The last episode of NXT was hilarious, although I can't believe that Derrick Bateman was eliminated.
NXT and SD superstars are shown before smackdown in that order, the other half of Superstars is filmed before RAW.
The results in elimination chamber were pretty average, although with the exception of Miz/Lawler the matches were great. The Stratus botch was classic.
The rock appearing in Wrestlemania will be something special. A few of the newz sites were reporting that Rock/Cena is something they'd like to plan for WM28- which makes sense, this Wrestlemania just having the Rock at the event is amazing, next year will need to be pretty special to top that. Austin is appearing at the 5/3 RAW so hopefully there'll be some kind of WM reunion.
WM predictions:
Cena defeats Miz - Miz has held the belt since november, so it'll be time for him to give it up. Cena will then continue his feud with CM Punk.
Taker defeats Triple H (Shawn as guest referee)- HHH get's Taker in a Pedigree and Shawn delivers SCM to HHH and cuts promo about how he didn't use outside help in his matches vs Taker. Shawn leaves ring and match needs to be restarted with new Ref.
Alberto Del Rrrrrio defeats Edge and enters program with Sin Cera (Mistico)
I'm expecting Michelle vs Layla for Diva title.

The best theme song on WWE at the moment is Ted Dibiase's "I Come from Money" - in the past I'd always crack up at Jimmy Wang Yang's "I'm Gon Have To Punch Someone Tonight"

I said no spoiler tags, but when it comes to future appearances and such, f***ing spoiler tag that ish up. I like to be surprised with this sort of stuff. Why bother reading about this stuff then watch it, it takes the fun away, no one does it for any other show, wrestling should be no different. The banners ruining the surprises in the crowd, eg diesel and rock, should be banned during any taping.

Laycool versing each other for the womens title sounds good to me - the sooner they break up the better! And obviously Alberto will win the title off Edge. Oh, and Brodus Clay FTW on NXT icon_razz.gif

Agreed! I remember going to the house shows in 2005-2007 and seeing all my fave superstars like Torrie Wilson, Trish Stratus, Stacey Keibler, Eddie Guerrero {RIP}, Jeff Hardy, Rey Rey, JBL, HHH, John Cena {back in May 05 - when he was popular and cool icon_lol.gif }, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Mr. Kennedy etc.

Looking back now, only a handful of those people are still in WWE - the rest have moved on. Although I did manage to meet Mr Kennedy and Beth Phoenix at a JBHIFI autograph signing:

Is anyoine going to the house shows come July/August this year? I won't be - personally I'm hanging out for TNA to come here icon_razz.gif

Here's a video of The Rocks comeback to John Cenas promo last week:

WWE are blurring a fine line between script and reality here. Makes me actually think Rocky and John have disdain in real life.

BTW, I don't see this as a spoiler; as anyone who watches RAW knows it's boring and would probably fast forward to this promo tomorrow night anyways icon_razz.gif

Pffft, speak for yourself. icon_razz.gif

Actually this episode was relatively boring and counter-productive, I even found The Rock promo somewhat disappointing, not technically bad but just not up to his extremely high standards.

As for TNA House Shows, I hear they're really good, to the point where if they based the TV product on the House show production they'd receive a lot more critical acclaim.

Is anyoine going to the house shows come July/August this year? I won't be - personally I'm hanging out for TNA to come here icon_razz.gif

Well TNA was supposed to come to Aus in early 2010 but they cancelled that tour when they went to Monday night shows to try to compete with Raw. Even though the Monday shows have stopped they haven't organised an Aussie tour since which is disappointing.

I'm thinking of going to the Sydney WWE show this year though.
