I have been trying to look up AFL 2010 but all I have found was an old entry on IGN and the Big Ant website which mentions the AFL game but hasn't been updated since 2008, neither has the Red Ant DVD website. So I looked into it a little further and found this...

http://blogs.theage.com.au/digital-life/screenplay/2009/02/11/capcomjumpshi.html

That's dated February and I can't find anything else about it, does anyone know what the situation is with Big Ant? And is the AFL still getting made or has production been suspended?

How long ago was that? It just seems odd for a little company like Big Ant to have such a massive project like the AFL game and just not put any updates, images or anything at all to suggest the game is still in production.

As far as I know Sony still hold exclusive publishing rights to the AFL franchise. They might be holding off until Sony loses exclusivity since releasing a niche game on the most expensive console in terms of purchase price and development price may be financial suicide.

Had a look at the Big Ant website and there is an update of:

"AFL!

Now that we have released info on Rugby League Live, expect news on the upcoming Australian Football League game for the Xbox360, Playstation3, and PC here soon!"

There is no date of when this "update" occurred and no time-frame of when to expect the "news". The only date on there is the release date of Rugby League Live on the 2nd of September. This is the only official comment from Big Ant on the AFL game since initially announcing the project in 2008. Does that mean this game has been on the shelf or does it genuinely take this long to make? And why on earth has League been getting priority over AFL?

I am happy to hear that an AFL game is allegedly still being made but this hugely vague update on the Big Ant website leads me to believe it wont be released this year. Otherwise the long awaited official update from Big Ant, years in the making, would be more comprehensive than a single sentence.

I am actually really keen for this game. I love AFL a lot lately and never owned a Sports Game before so this will be my entry to the genre! I heard Hamish and Andy talk about playing the World Cup for 90 Minutes and I just thought how fun that would be to do with my favourite sport, AFL.

So here's hoping it's coming soon!

Yeap, it's still going strong - was talking to an ex colleague recently who is working on it now. He's at least 9/10 genius, so the MP at least should be pretty damned solid icon_wink.gif

This is an interview with Big Ant CEO, Ross Symons about the AFL game. The interview was done last year, though only published recently.

http://www.theage.com.au/digital-life/games/blogs/screenplay/a-tale-of-two-codes/20100707-100jj.html

According to the article, the game is due is September, which would coincide nicely with the Grand Final.

I had a good read of the article and after reading the comments below, the release date is actually just for the rugby game and that there is no release date yet for AFL, although the commenter then goes on to say that the start of next season would be a good guess.

I hear ya. But unfortunately it's now AFL 2011. Official statement from the BigAnt website:

"AFL Release Timing Announced

AFL on Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii will be released in the first half of 2011. We are working hard to ensure we deliver the best and most up to date AFL experience possible on console and we thank you for your continued support and patience.

It is possible that the Nintendo Wii version, which is being developed by Wicked Witch Software , may come out slightly earlier."

I am very much under the impression that BigAnt needs to be replaced pronto. Atleast with a company like EA it wouldn't take 4 years to make a game that should be (and was being) made annually.

Big Ant is a small local studio. EA is an international development and publishing behemoth. If Big Ant had the same resources as EA, then they'd feasibly be able to pump out an AFL game every year.

You also need to understand that they're starting from scratch. Once they've got the engine and mechanics sorted out, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to make minor adjustments year on year as EA do with Madden, for example.

Give them a break. I'd rather they spent more time working out the kinks and polishing it to be a great title than shoving it prematurely out the door to critical and commercial ruin.

I can't wait. It'll be miles off FIFA or NBA 2K for polish, but fuck, new footy game.

I've also heard the release date is April 2011, but that's all I know. It's either the 8th, the 12th or the 30th.

You can pre-order from EB now. I'd expect a concrete release date to be announced around the NAB Cup final.

Hopefully they'll polish up the linking between the animations for running and kicking- sticks out like a sore thumb.
