I got confused, I mentioned the whole ignorant cattle thing, then you posted while I was posting and I went back and edited my post without really thinking that "Hey I only posted that after Fetid posted and as such he hasn't read what I posted before he posted" and assumed you had and yeah. So basically just me being a spaz icon_razz.gif

So supercomputers are better than humans at Jeopardy - by a lot - now.

IBM's Watson Wins Jeopardy! Next Up: Fixing Health Care

Quote:
With final Jeopardy, it was Jennings' last chance to win, since Rutter had fallen behind. His correct question of "Who is Bram Stoker" to an answer about 19th Century novelists was accompanied by a message: "I for one welcome our computer overlords." The message was prescient. Watson also had the correct answer, though, winning it the game with $77,973 total. At Spin NYC, the bar erupted into applause at the win.

Computer overlords indeed.

Yeah. Watson had trouble with a few of the questions because of implied meanings or very subtle differences in the language. Of course that didn't stop it wiping the floor with the meatbags though - $77k to $22k and something a lot lower.

So, an enormous database full of factually correct trivia won out over some people in a game of trivia... am I supposed to be surprised? =P

They couldn't have done this 10 years ago.

The hard bit is parsing the phrasing of the question (answer?) to get the correct answer (question?). There's also a bit of game theory involved in how large the wagering should be and some statistics based on if it's confident enough to buzz in.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they're going to apply the technology to real business now. Some of the articles I read say they're going to target the health sector.

It also apparently crashed constantly taking ages to reboot each time making the show take 4 hours to film (instead of the usual 1)

re: Waco. After the whole Timothy McVeigh thing I doubt the US will be quite so heavy handed again.

From the headline I thought it was going to be a retarded attention grabbing family untill

Quote:
A new Egyptian father has named his daughter Facebook in honour of the role social media played in his country's recent revolution.

That's actually a fair call. Facebook did kind of help them over throw a tyrannical dictator is partially responsible for the fact that she'll be raised in a better more free and open country.
