Thread bump!
So hows everyones shmup skills going? Anybody playing anything of interest?
Finally decided to have a decent crack at the Gundemonium collection after eyeing off Admeisters score on the leaderboards, as much as I want to like it I just can't, I grew up on vertical shooters and have never really enjoyed any horizontal ones. The enemies are all too big, it looks weird, and I just can't get used to the PS3 controller after using my SF4 joystick on the 360 for Mushihimesama, Espgaluda etc.
After a decent break I fired up Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 again, and I'm struggling to get to the point I was at before I stopped playing (lvl 4 boss on one credit). With so many big games currently out and on the horizon (non-shmup related), I guess this game will start collecting dust now, would've been an awesome feeling to 1cc this one, maybe I'll try again over the Christmas break.
Great news on the Guwange front, finally took the time to check out some videos, to me it looks like one of the easier Cave shooters (if there is such a thing as easy when it comes to bullet hell shmups). Looks similar to Mushihimesama in scoring, can anybody elaborate on this? Slappy? Had a quick look on neogaf and couldn't find any 'rules' for Guwange, would love to know how the scoring system works before it gets released, it'll be a day 1 purchase and I intend on giving the leaderboards a decent go if there is any.

Here's a vid of another new shooter hitting the xbla/PSN store, it's called Trouble Witches Neo, and looks pretty awesome, even for a horizontal shooter:
Visually, it is one of the best looking shooters I've seen, so bright and colourful with sweet background environments. In gameplay, you can slow down enemy bullets and convert to gold, which can then be spent on 'cards' in the item shop to increase your magic/bombs among other things. Definitely worth checking out.
Xbox 360 has an exclusive arrange mode, and will cost 800MSP over the summer period.

It looks a lot like Gundemonium Recollection to me, maybe the enemies are a fraction smaller, but that's about it. Speaking of the Gundemonium collection, have you tried Hitogata Happa? Unlike the other two, it's a vertical scrolling game. Pretty tough too. _________________

Yeah does look quite similar to Gundemonium, still not sure whether I'm going to get it when it eventually gets released because of this.
Hitogata Happa is the only one from the Gundemonium collection I haven't tried, will definitely fire it up later on today if you say it's vertical.

G.Rev (makers of Wartech: Senko no Ronde) has announced a new XBLA exclusive called Seisou Kouki Strania
Check out screens and trailer here
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/10/28/strania_xla/
Reminds me of Radiant Silvergun, it's meant to be a classic 80s/90s style shmup. Looks really good. _________________

Well, I've had a chance to play Radiant Silvergun.
Words fail to describe how much I want a 360 just for that remake. _________________

So.....Guwange came out a few hours ago on XBLA, anyone else going to pick it up?
Typical looking vertical shooter by Cave, there's no updated graphics like Cave's retail releases, just a bare-bones port. There's no screen adjustment for size and tilt, which is a huge shame as the game isn't using the full screen vertically, so it could be slightly bigger.
Still figuring out what to do, have just picked one character and stuck with him for an hour or so, quite a challenging game. Can reach level 3 so far in arcade mode. A bit different from other shooters I've played, you can slow down enemy bullets at anytime by holding the shoot button and directing an energy ball thats in front of you towards the enemy with the left stick, which moves your character at the same time. But during this mode, you can't move your character up and down, so that's going to take a bit of getting used to. It's essential though as there's some insanely quick bullet patterns coming towards you, much tougher than Mushihimesama or Espgaluda for its earlier stages. As you're a character that's 'walking' rather than flying, you are restricted in where you can move in certain areas also. 200/200g is going to be a bitch.
Still not sure how arrange mode is different, but the 'exclusive' Xbox 360 mode is just the arcade version with your character's special mode mentioned above (holding the shoot button) removed from the game, so you're faced with dodging some of the hardest patterns I've seen (from the limited Cave games I've played at least) with no assistance. It's basically the game's 'hard mode' as you can't adjust the difficulty of any game mode you select, another feature missing from the retail releases.
So although its missing many features from the retail version like updated graphics and difficulty settings, it's a fraction of the cost and has leaderboards. I'd say the 1cc achievements can be done through co-op, so please add me if you intend on buying it and up for some co-op action.
Stuck with the Gundemonium recollection whilst waiting for Guwange and now I'm really digging it, as I have figured out how to play it properly and know all of its rules. Can make it to the level three boss, but sitting just outside the top 200 in the leaderboards, so it seems not many people really stick with this game.

I tried the demo, it def 'feels' very different, the walking makes it feel like an action game, I actually enjoyed the demo and just the feel in general, doesn't feel like an ordinary shmup.
I agree the screen is too damn small, I had to squint my eyes for the most part. I'm waiting for my free 800 M$ points, now I'm tossing between this and KOF 2002 Ultimate Match.
You can count on Bev to purchase and review Guwange _________________

Import only (Japanese Xbox 360 only) and mega pricey too, I know ZBAU (wrong spelling I think) has it. You can get it on your iphone, which got excellent reviews btw.
It looks good but I can't count on shmup sites...they praise every shmup game ha ha. Hoping someone can share their experience with it. _________________

Ahhh ok then, I'll probably never end up getting a japanese 360 console, they're just too expensive once you buy a couple of games. There's more than enough shooters to get me by, I don't see the point in buying heaps of new shooters if I can't 1CC most of the ones I already own (Guwange, Espgaluda II, Mushihimesama)
Still addicted to the Gundemonium Recollection the past few days, a 20-min session turns into a 3 hour marathon all too easily. So freaking close to finishing Hitogata Happa on standard difficulty. Reminds me alot of the Touhou series which Lapzod (I think?) is in love with. Just amazes me how such a simple genre offers up so many unique ideas. It's great being able to spend gems that you collect on different 'dolls' to use through the 6 levels. So your skill in the end affects how many lives you have from the dolls you buy. Honestly had 1mm of health on the final boss before losing my last life. The PS3 controller is still awful for shmups, I'd probably be able to get there with an arcade stick.

I would like to bring your attention to a potentially region free 360 shmup (more likely than not)
Do Don Pachi Daifukkatsu Black Label
DoDonpachi Resurrection Black Label (English)
The game is simply an expanded version of the original DoDonpachi Resurrection (released in Japan back in November 2009). Black Label will be released on the 3rd of Feb, so the gap between the two releases is rather small, makes me glad I didn't import the original back in November.
Some features/changes in Black Label (taken from Wiki)
| Quote: |
Ship selection changed: Players now select the fighter type, then the style (Bomb, Power, or Strong). The style now corresponds to easy, medium, and hard difficulty respectively. Then, player can select whether to utilize auto-bomb or not.
Ships can now fire both laser and shot simultaneously.
Score counter's number letter sizes increase every 5th digit for easier viewing
Added Red Mode (烈怒モード, Reddo Mōdo?), a small long bar at top right (or top middle when playing with two players) which increases if you shoot both laser and shot simultaneously. When it passes a certain threshold, the bar in the meter turns red, and the game becomes much more difficult while it is in the red. The bar will reset when the player dies, or reduced after hyper ends / player does not shoot both laser and shot.
Hyper meter now increase very slowly unless you turn the "Red Mode" bar red. In addition, Hyper power itself runs out much faster after use.
Hypers can now be "collected" for the Power style. Continue to increase the Hyper meter and it will stock up like a bomb when the meter is filled.
Activating the hyper now shows the current "rank" of the Hyper effectiveness with blocking bullets temporarily.
The bee bonus items in the stages function differently.
Hibachi (true final boss) now can appear in the first loop if certain requirements are met. In addition, the difficulty / durability of both the final boss Taisabachi, now renamed Supreme Weapon of Extreme Hellish Annihilation - Golden Disaster (獄滅極戮至高兵器ゴールデン・ディザスター, Gokumetsu-Gokuriku Shikou-Heiki Gooruden Dizasutaa?) and the true final boss have increased dramatically.
Hit combos are now calculated differently. Namely, the hit combo does not go up as fast unless you turn the "Red Mode" bar red.
All the music has been replaced. |
Exclusive to the Xbox 360 version are:
1. An Arrange mode
2. Crossover content from Ketsui (the only retail shmup I own for my Japanese 360)
As most of you know, the last Black Label release "Espgaluda" ended up being region free. So there is actually a good chance that this will be region free, we will find out on 3rd of Feb! *fingers crossed
Here are some trailers (shows off some of the Ketsui stuff too). (embedding doesn't work with these videos!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Grj9Sw4SAg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFjEFjx8B_4&feature=channel
Love the music!! looks like I might order this along with my friend's bday present. _________________

So is anybody else going to be importing Deathsmiles from the UK? We need to get people buying this so more Shmups get a released outside of Japan.
It's currently $31.99 on ozgameshop and 17.85 pounds plus postage at Zavvi and is out on February 18. _________________

This may sound slightly silly, but you might like to check out the Flying Hamster mini on the PlayStation Store. It's a surpringly simple, yet fun and challenging shmup in later levels. You can get it for $3.45. _________________

Mmm sounds intriguing Admeister, will check it out next time I log on to PSN.
So from the Cavefest conference or whatever, I had a look through the blog and it looks like Radiant Silvergun is due out on May 26. Includes an extra stage and boss, and updated graphics. All this for an Xbox Live release, so I'm glad to see that the cave games for the arcade are getting as much attention to detail as the recent full release shmups like Espgaluda and Mushi.
And Deathsmiles PAL for x360 has now been released and is on its way to me! Might write a mini review after a bit of play if a few are still on the fence with this one.
