Big + for the Horace Grant jersey. He was complete workhorse and not given enough credit for his play and toughness during the three-peat. _________________

yes do the 15k of course. your 60m/10k pace will be just slightly slower for the 15k (~92m-100m) since you're on aerobic anyway
build up to a 12k or so at similar or slower pace (75-77m) about 4 days before the race then cutoff (nothing more than 20min/day) before the race.
if you had more time you could do something like an 18k before the raceday but for early march stick to the above imo.
atmosphere of the raceday will pull you through if you think you're unprepared. do palgn proud.

The max I've done is a 24km race, horrible experience, won't be doing it again anytime soon 15km is a much nicer length
My advice is basically the exact same as crescent fresh's. Basically try to work up to 15km. You don't have long till the race now but if you've been doing 10km, you should be able to build that up closer to 15km before the race. In the end if you've done some training (which it sounds like you have) it's all about mental stamina, just keep pushing and you'll get to the end!
Due to having too much time on holidays, I'm going to 4 gym sessions a week from 3. Changing everything to suit 4 sessions a week but should be interesting to see if I get anything more out of an extra session a week. _________________

I lost another 1.8kgs this week bringing my total weight loss to 11.3kgs in around 4 weeks. I've also lost 6.5cm off my waistline as well. Still a long way to go though. _________________ RIP Buddha 19/10/1952 - 03/01/2004

On the weekend had 2 birthdays to attend.
Sat night i consumed 3 beers, 2 wholemeal semi healthy sandwiches, caeser saled and 2 chicken scewers.
That little effort made me put on a whole kilo exactly overnight grrrr.
Next night made a pig of myself at a Hills signature buffet for the other birthday...
But ran/walked 15 kms afterwoods to offset it.
Was not worth it for that distance lol.
Congrats to all in this thread that have lost weight : )

Who's got two thumbs and has lost 8kg and just over 5 inches off his waistline since the start of the year? This guy.
In all seriousness, I've been trying to lose wait and girth for my wedding in May so it's looking pretty good atm. Starting off at 98kg and a 108cm waistline was not doing me any favours getting into my wedding suit. Having lost the weight and the girth has certainly helped me fit into it at my last fitting. Still a little snug so I have to try and lose some more.
I've slacked off the exercise for the past 3 weeks unfortunately but I've also put myself on a 6 week liver detox program (week 1 is over as of today) in an attempt to help me lose even more weight and get my body right. Diet-wise I'm eating a lot more vegetables per day with either a piece of fresh fish/chicken/beef. Upped my fruit intake as well but taking some other supplements to help with digestion and the whole liver detox. I'm also drinking at least 3 litres of water a day to help flush out my system.
All in all, I don't feel anywhere as big as I used to and my clothes are fitting a lot more comfortably now.
If I can drop down to the mid 80kg mark, I'll be pretty happy! _________________

Just found this thread thought I would share. About a year or so ago I was pretty sick and didnt eat very much (was in hospital for weeks at a time) and when I got out I was underweight at around 70kg. When I got out I thought I should put some on. With the help of certain medication i was taking I did not realise just how much weight I put on. It was not until the end of january this year that I got woken up. I was playing a kinect game and I was looking at the photos it took of me and I was shocked to say the least. I got on the scales and saw that I was 84.5kg. I had put on about 15kg!
I decided that I would actually try and lose weight properly and when i do certain things I do them pretty strongly. I lost a kilo every day for the first 5 days doing A LOT of excercise and eating a VERY LOW amount of calories per day. For snacks I would eat low calorie jelly and fill up on low calorie cordial to feel full. My meals consisted of salads primarly.
I than decided to pace myself a little after I hit a bit of a wall. I was doing what I did before, but my weight remained the same for a fair few days. After a while it began to drop again. After a month I hit my goal weight. I reached 74.2kg (goal was 75) and have remained that weight as a type this making it a total loss of 10.3kg. I am fitting into my favourite jeans again and feel much better in confidence as well as just being happier and feeling healthier.
The worst part is I was lifting weights (free weights at home) daily but due to the lack of food instead of gaining muscle I was losing it lol. Other than that I am very happy and glad to see everyone else is doing so well _________________

Just needed to lose that last 1kg to meet the doctor's target. Have not reached that for 2 week already.
Got to admit I was starting to become lazy so I'm glad I didn't gain weight but I will need to start working out some more. I am getting a bit tired of jogging due to losing energy more quickly than I used to do and replaced it with walking but I should also do something else to compliment walking...
I have found the pre-diabetes diet the doctor put me on, I couldn't jog as far as I could before it, which is why I've turn to walking but everyone is telling me different things. I am now confused as to was it my change in diet that gave me less energy to jog (this diet reduced the amount of carbs I intake daily) or is it more a mental thing... I think I might need to go to a dietician because I am confused and I can't just intake carbs freely. Doesn't help everyone is telling me different things and some say I need to go on shakes, some said I'm just want the easy way out of jogging, more carbs, less carbs, more protein *head explodes*
Edit - was told to have a banana an hour before the jog/run. Hopefully they will provide enough fuel to last at least 15 minutes!.
Edit 2 - seems like the diet doctor set is the major factor. I might stick with brisk walking until my next blood test and a possible visit to the dietician. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Bit of a bump, but anyways:
I've just started going to the gym every week on tuesdays for one hour. I also play football (soccer) with training on Monday and Wednsday and a match on Friday every week.
I just wanted to ask a few questions about gym:
I'd like to gain some muscle (I don't want to 'weight-smash') in as many places as I can, I'm very weak and I'm only 50kgs which puts me at a disadvantage when I get challanged in a game. Whats the best way to go about this? Would it be to concentrate on form, do low weight but high reps? Or vice-versa? Is it impossible to get any results at all going to the gym just once a week?
Also, I get pains in the muscles I work out after a day or so. Is this my muscles getting used to gym, as I've only just started, or am I over-doing it? These sometimes last a few days, but the severity and duration of the pain is receding.
Basically: I'm a gym noob and I need some help
Thanks a lot PALGNers! _________________

Kenny, I must say I'm impressed my boy. I'm not a PT or anything but I can give you basic answers.
The pain you're feeling is natural, especially for beginners and as time goes on your body will recover much quickly. Developing these lean muscles is always the hardest step. Within a week or two you'll feel a little sore but you'll find it much easier to cope with.
Higher weights + fewer reps is the way to go. But getting form down is important, especially when you're starting out. There's no point lifting a higher weight when you're not doing it properly, it's much better to be able to do the excercise even with a lower weight. Get the form down, then go a 3 x 5 (default, this can be adjusted depending on the excercise) route. Compound lifts (Bench, Military Presses, Squats and Dead Lifts) are always the best course of action. Especially when starting out. Eventually you might find yourself targetting certain muscle groups but that won't be for a few months in.
You'll want to hit the weights three times a week, with a rest day between each session. If you want to keep your body going, then I recommend a cardio session with some circuit training (push ups, sit ups etc) to keep your body burning.
Most importantly, eat and eat a lot. If you want to put on muscle you've got to feed your body the appropriate amount of nurtrients for them to grow. Obviously you need protein so hit up eggs, skinless chicken breast, turkey, kangaroo etc. and you'll be right.
Even more importantly, have fun with it. This shouldn't be something you do for say one winter, this should be something you keep with you for the rest of your life. Don't get mad at yourself if you didn't reach your target goal one week, bodies can be stubborn things and it might take some check and error work until you can progress. If you keep up the good work, the results will show.
All the best my friend! _________________

If I could add to Big Pete's advice, I would say don't underestimate the benefits of using the row machine. Rows are great for core strength!
Also, mix up how you do your workouts every now and then. Our bodies are prone to becoming complacent and if you're doing the exact same thing all the time, you will eventually see less results.
Stick to the basic 3 sets, 5 reps type of thing, but for something different, on the odd occasion start with a slightly lighter weight and more reps with the first set. Next set, add a bit more weight, do less reps. Then for the last set, chuck as much weight on there that you can handle and do like 3 or 4 reps (whatever you can do).
And have a two week break every couple of months. This way, when you get back in to it, your body will be like WTF? all over again and you'll be kicking it back into gear.
I'm not a PT either, but this is all advice given to me by my PT from 10-15yrs ago. I say from 10-15yrs ago, because I haven't really kept up-to-date with training techniques, so please correct me somebody if this info is outdated.

Thanks for the replies!
I'll definitely take the routine advice as it's something I'm struggling to understand at the moment. Thanks!
I'll also push to get into the gym a second day, it'd be hard to push to a third cos I'm coaching a junior side too and I've still got to balance it out with year 12.
I'm definately starting to enjoy myself more in the gym, even in these first few weeks. I'm starting to look forward to it and I'll definately sign up for a gym during the off-season.
Thanks PALGNers! _________________

Bummed around in the last few weeks and I lost another kg. Found out I have to be on this diet forever unless I want diabetes, curse you family history of diabetes!!!. I really wished it was actually short term, no one told me this was for life?!? Losing weight while hardly doing anything is nice though since the doctor placed a target of 6 extra kgs and I lost 1 of 6. Before my ever-changing blood test, I was 75kg, now 65kg .
Having a sweet tooth, it is difficult to see people eating sweet stuff so happily. However, I am getting over rice though, it's evil! (gone of the days of eating 2+ bowls of rice) _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Increadi-bump!
Quit gym ages ago seeing as I was far too lazy to go more than twice a week and that $40/week was really eating into my wages. Then kinda did nothing in terms of exercise and noticed I was packing on the kg's again.
So for the past few days, have started walking around the block a few times. ~3km/night. Its only day 3 and I feel markedly better with increased energy. Still eating terrible, terrible stuff though. Eg maccas/icecream/etc, but eventually will phase it all out. _________________

Hooray for walking!. I walk 30-40min during lunch break at work 4-5 days a week and the kgs keep on dropping slowly .
That and 2-3 days of light arm/abs/butt workout. Lately I haven't been having shoulder and arm pain issues anymore so the arm workout is working.
My progress - 4kg to lose!!!. Can't wait because I am saving up money for a big shopping spree when I meet my target. Chances are I would've dropped another dress size. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

^ That is awesome! I love going clothes shopping and fitting into things I wouldn't have normally. Makes you feel all sexy.
I joined a gym a few weeks ago and I'm falling in love with it all over again.
I used to go a couple of years ago, but stopped because it was so expensive. This new gym I go to is only about $12 a week and includes classes.
I have been managing to go 3-4 times a week. I joined to improve both my physical and mental health, and it is really working. My mood has improved and I don't have as many aches and pains. I have even lost a bit of weight, which I wasn't expecting as I haven't been controlling my diet. _________________

Had a bit of a set back recently, being quite sick for a few weeks, but went for a run on Saturday, and planning to go again today hopefully if the weather is decent, otherwise I might follow Island_Wolf in going for a run during lunch break tomorrow (granted it would be a different park...)
Currently aiming to drop 15-20KG down though, which is what I was close to doing last year, but managed to put on the KGs again unfortunately.

I haven't been able to renew my gym membership becuase of financial issues but I really can't wait until I get back into it, it felt great to lose a bit of weight and now I'm worried I'll put it back on.

I just got a bit of a gym question, don't really work out or anything. I did for awhile but stopped and now I've gotten busy with Uni so no time to join a gym really.
I'm about 91kg when I weigh myself first thing in the morning and I'd just like to drop to the 80's.
But is walking enough? Like maybe walking my dogs for 50 minutes a day and eating less at dinner? (Normally go for second servings.)
Or do I really need to do more? _________________

Increase protein intake, lessen your carbs, 50mins of walking a day should be plenty enough.
Its not the amount of food that you intake, its the quality of it.
It also depends on how much time you have to devote to exercise and how quickly you want to drop the weight. Maybe try adding a little bit of weight training if possible? To increase muscle tone. _________________ I have no signature
