I think $80 is the retail for most so we better get used to it. The lower end games seem to be $70 however

hmm, I have Street Fighter 2 already on my DS, I don't think I'll buy it for $80 especially when the iphone version is way cheaper.

As much as I love Street fighter I doubt I'm gunna buy this.
A: It's not Arcade
B: shoulder buttons for punches is horrible.
C: the 3d view thing while looking cool would be irritaing as hell to play.
Bring on Blazblue I say.

The iPhone version is a completely different game. It's like comparing the PS2 and GBA versions of Prince of Persia.
I'm fairly certain that this is basically a handheld version of the PS3/360 SSFIV (which is still a hell of a lot cheaper than $80).

$80 IS ridiculous, especially since the US version is retailing for US$40 - which is about AU$38 at the moment.
Anyone who isn't importing a US 3DS console is wasting a lot of their money - $100 on the console itself, and at least $40 per game.

It's an insane price but not for the reason you think it is.

What's the reason then? I've seen a lot of explanations from game publishers regarding 'localization' and 'shipping costs', but the fact is:
The localization costs would only apply to Europe, where they have to translate to a multitude of different languages. The primary language in Australia is English, the same as in the US and Canada; why do we need a localized version with all the European languages?
And when you consider that the games themselves are usually manufactured in China, given the trade deals we have with China that are nowhere near as restrictive as the trade deals China has with the US, shipping should be even cheaper.

I would agree, except the one thing has has impressed me about the 3DS (and to a greater extent, the NGP) is that the line between a console game and a handheld game is blurring. Obviously to a Street Fighter fanatic the 3DS version would be inferior, because they couldn't plug in their $300 Tournament stick, but to the average gamer who plays fighting games with a controller anyway, the difference is negligible in function, and in this next generation of portables, in graphics.
