Indeed, there's an impressive amount of stuff to see and do in the game! Getting the Platinum trophy would take a lot of hours. I just popped the game into my PS3 again a few days ago and started doing some more side-quests. My hours are much higher than yours, but my completion rate isn't!

Man you guys will never believe what just happened!

Ok so I'm fighting Dahaka (chapter 11 boss, final fantasy 13) for like the 4th time, and it's going better than expected. The moment he casts the spell that gave all party negative status effects I immediately summon Odin. Now I was meant to trigger the gestalt mode but I got distracted by a phone call and missd it...and that's when something really weird happened.

So while Odin was summoned, I had the boss on stagger and so it was down and out..but after Odin left (without activating gestalt)...the boss just...stayed down...even after the stagger effect had worn out. So no matter what I did, the boss just wouldnt get up!!! EASY GLITCH WIN!!

I love it when that happens...

Don't know if any of you guys are looking forward to this or not...but one of the coolest Xbox Live Arcade games will be released in a month on the Xbox 360.

Info from Runic Games site:
Quote:
Q: What has been changed to make the game work on the 360?

A: The UI is COMPLETELY overhauled from the ground up. Nothing works the same. All new art and navigation. The concept of item ’slots’ is done away with – you just have a number of items you can hold ( 50 – ignores stack counts ). Potions and scrolls stack up to 99. Potions ‘auto pick’ the best potion to heal you or regen mana. You don’t have to think about it or map it. We iterated on the UI a ridiculous amount.

You can have 4 active mapped skills at a time, and a secondary set that you can swap between (using the dpad) for 8 mapped skills. Most of us actually find it easier to use a variety of skills on the console vs. PC, oddly enough.

Force feedback is in for quakes, strikes, low health heartbeats, and tugs on the fishing line icon_smile.gif Feels nice.

Q: How are controls different?

A: Control is direct – no virtual cursors ever. Combat is a little different – you move forward slightly with melee attacks and all the attack animations are redone to support this. You don’t ‘target’ enemies – you’ll get a red highlight for a ‘primary’ target that is in range, but for melee attacks you hit everything in your damage cone (secondary targets get secondary damage ). Feels natural and does what you expect.

Ranged combat is actually in many ways easier – kiting and dodging are significantly more viable with a controller and the autotargeting for ranged attacks works pretty well. ‘lobbed’ skills mapped to the triggers have a default distance, but you can finesse them for longer or shorter throws by holding the trigger at a given depth. Combat pace feels ‘faster’ and more maneuverable. If you’ve played classics like Dark Alliance or Champions of Norrath, you have the general idea ( but no jumping ). Movement speed is analog – you can move slower by easing on the stick, something you can’t do at all on PC.

Q: Has anything been removed/added for the console version?

A: No skills have been omitted. Some skills have had alterations to their functionality to make them feel better ( i.e. you don’t select corpses to summon a Nether Imp – you just cast it and if there’s a corpse around, there you go ).

Pretty much everything from the PC version is here. We didn’t remove any features, with the exception of secondary weapon sets, because there was no way we could find that didn’t feel horrible in inventory management. Socketing, enchanting, fishing, the infinite dungeon, item combination, are all represented.

We brought over some goodies from TL2 to the console version. Loading times are much reduced. Better animation blending makes combat snappier ( hard to describe, but you’ll probably feel it ). Automaps are brought over from TL2’s new automap system ( They are rendered out and much more readable, and icons cleave to the borders of the ring ). In addition, there are three new armor sets (one for each class), some new random quests for one of the miners in town, and a new pet – the Chakawary.

Q: Will Torchlight be released for the PS3 / PSN?

A: There are no PS3 plans at this time. Microsoft is acting as the publisher for the XBLA release.

Gameplay Demo:

Latest Trailer:

I'm buying this as soon as it hits the Xbox Live Marketplace. It will cost 1200 MS Points and it's being released on the 9th March.

I've nearly finished the main quest in Torchlight on the PC and I liked it but it felt so lonely beating up tonnes of monster all by myself! I can't believe they didn't implement a co-op feature in the XBLA release, that's just odd. Just a tip for anyone planning to pick up the XBLA release, turn the difficulty up to hard because the game is pathetically easy on the normal difficulty.

Co-op for Torchlight would of been awesome. I'm guessing they wanted to keep it as close as possible to the PC version. From what I've heard, co-op couldn't be done with the PC version so leaving it out of the 360 version would keep fans of the PC one happy.

I just hope they bring Torchlight 2 to the 360 as well as I think that will have co-op icon_smile.gif

If they threw co-op into the 360 version then I would have bought it again. I heard they wanted to save the co-op aspect for the sequel so that's probably why they didn't bother. For that reason I'm really looking forward to Torchlight 2. It's a great game but co-op would make it an absolute blast in my opinion.

I just had an awesome session in Demon's Souls. I was playing through 1-3 and I got invaded by not one but three other players and managed to take each of them down with ease. The last one was funny because he rolled off the side of a building as I was attacking him and fell to his death. Another invader was trying to poison me and then run away but I've pumped my vitality stat so high it had little effect and I was packing pink lotuses (I think that's what they're called) that cure poison.

Anyway, I'm having a lot of trouble with 4-2 at the moment. After you kill the reaper there's this cliff area with about 6 or so skeletons and those flying sting rays keep bombarding me with spells.

Bah! It looks like Tactics Ogre is a good (maybe great) game, while I was really hoping it wouldn't be so I could blissfully ignore it and be that much time- and money-richer. I'm very close to preordering from Ozgameshop - $41 delivered, premium edition containing 44-page hardcover artbook and soundtrack CD. I could just buy it from EB games for $68... or not. I feel kinda bad saying it (after my last comment), but I'll ditch buying this locally when I can get it 40% cheaper overseas.

This thread from The Something Awful Forums is a very good resource for the game. I don't think a copy and paste job would truly do it justice and it'd be at least as long as some of Kyle's bigger efforts icon_wink.gif

Is the Rune Factory series any good? We have one at work and wasn't sure if it was worth getting or not.

It's like Harvest Moon but with a dungeon crawl added on. I actually enjoyed them more than HM.

Short answer: If you've ever played a Harvest Moon game, it's just like that but with some dungeon crawling thrown in for good measure.

Long answer: The Rune Factory/Harvest Moon series is pretty unique. It's all about farming. The eventual goal is to earn lots of money, upgrade your farm, seduce some villager woman with gifts until she marries you and you have a child together. Or something like that. You end up so caught up in the minutiae of running your farm that the (in-game) months can just slip away like that.

Running your farm is the most important thing in the game. It's the source of the majority of your income even when you take selling items gathered by dungeon crawling etc into account. You clear your farm, plough it, plant seeds, water them and harvest the plants. It's both tedious and utterly engrossing, though definitely not for everyone. You have limited hours in the day and limited stamina (energy for any task from swinging a sword to watering plants), so a lot of the game comes down to prioritising. What chores do you need to do on the farm before socialising in town? Do you have any helpers? Do you need to grow/buy more food for your animals/monsters? Do you have enough time to get to x-level in y-dungeon?

There's some sort of reason you need to go around to each dungeon and defeat its boss, but it's really just to get you visiting each place and unlocking more farmland. Story isn't a strong point of the series, but it's there.

The Harvest Moon/Rune Factory series is like a big joke on gamers; it's kinda not a game at all but a series of tedious and/or repetitive tasks focused around a farm. I enjoy it but I struggle to maintain enough long term interest to see myself past a couple of in-game years. Don't worry too much about which number Rune Factory you pick up, they evolve at about the same rate as the Pokemon series.

If you want to buy a Rune Factory with all of the best features, start with the third one on the DS...if you don't care about that, go with the first or any other Rune Factory game in the series.

I played a tiny amount of Rune Factory 3 earlier and it is definitely kilometres ahead of the first game in the series which I also own. Lots of new little features and the whole farming and fighting system just feels so much smoother. I haven't played enough to get much of an impression yet but it has a lot of features from the other Rune Factory games like crafting, fishing etc.... There's new stuff I've come across (so far) like quests you can do for other characters and there seems to be clothing (not sure if that existed in RF2 or not).

As I said I haven't played much of it yet so I'll be able to give some proper impressions later, this was just a quick post before I go off to explore the Calm Lands in Final Fantasy X icon_smile.gif

We have the second game at work, I'll probably grab it from all that input because while I didn't mind Harvest Moon I found the constant farming to be quite tedious after a while, so I think the dungeon aspect will help to break things up and will be a much better experience.

I like tactical rpgs, but not FFT and this is starting to remind me of FFT unfortunately. A shame, because I was quite interested in the game initially.

I should point out that you will also be farming in the dungeon. Indeed the best farm areas are deep in the hardest dungeon. Different plants grow in different areas. Monsters vary between dungeons as does their combat- or farming-related loot. At least that's how I remember it working (I think I played 1 and 2).

2 more chapters in Resonance of Fate to go and I still don't understand the importance of some characters!

Trinity Souls of Zill O'll demo is also on PSN now.

edit: whoa button bash galore, i think reviews will ***** about the game's textures and give it bad graphic ratings XD

I agree. I am a big fan of strategy rpgs, but I can not stand the two most popular games, being Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea. I find the way the combat systems are set up to be horrible, and cannot understand why they are more popular than others in the genre.

I believe Tactics Ogre is made by some of the same people as FFT (former Quest), and they are very similar.

I wasn't a big fan of FFT (or Disgaea) either but Ogre looks quite cool and seems to function differently from what I played at a friends many years ago.
It is still isometric and has a similar art style though.

Out of curiosity, what are your favourite SPRGs?

Vandal Hearts (the first, second is garbage), Jeanne D'Arc, Stella Deus (yes Stella Deus) and Valkyria Chronicles. Those are probably the stand outs that I can remember.

That's an awesome list. The only one I haven't played is Vandal Hearts (though I did play the second and it was garbage).

Stella Deus was good gameplay wise too, just couldn't take it seriously because the villian's name was Dignus, which is a letter swap away from Dingus.

I decided to grab the witcher few weeks back and I'm finally up to chapter 4.. I felt that chapter 2 dragged on for ages, however I'm really enjoying the story so far and the side quests are fun.

I'm not a big RPG fan, I've tried to get into many but end up getting half way through and forgetting about them. As i'm pumped for the 2nd, i'm determined to finish it.

question: Is the witcher one of the best RPG's for PC? Are there any others that stand out that's not BG2?

I grabbed the divinity 2 (upgraded one) when it was on steam sale, I am going to try and get through that next, is there a specific type of class I should play. What is the most fun? I quickly got up to the section where you get to pick if your melee/caster/hunter.. thanks!!!

One of the best? Yeah sure.

The best? Doubtful.

It's got to compete with Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Fallout, Planescape, Neverwinter Nights (and bazillion mods for it), Dragon Age, Knights of the Old Republic, Eye of the Beholder (and the rest of the SSI stable), Might and Magic, Elder Scrolls, Ultima and probably a million others I've played and forgotten =P

Managed to finish my initial playthrough of Valkyria Chronicles 3 while waiting in line last night for the 3DS event, and damn it's good. The story is alot better than #2 and it complements the story of #1 very nicely. Can't wait for the localised version

Hmmm, roughly a week and a bit I think.
That said, I still haven't done the Free missions nor the extra missions, I only worked on the main story
