I beat Prince of Persia: Warrior Within last night. It's really the same story as my last post about Sands of Time, good platforming, mediocre combat and a terrible, terrible port. The audio issues remain, the dialogue isn't soft like the first game but there seems to be a lot of SFX issues. I really struggled to get through this game, even though it's relatively short, I just couldn't motivate myself to pick up the controller, the story was crap and the voice "acting" laughable, they changed the voice actor for the Prince so instead of the British accent he has a silly "middle eastern" accent, I understand why they did it but I think it really hurt continuity. Not that continuity matters much as the story's delivered in such a way as to make it a great chore to follow what's going on anyway.
So yeah, for me it was less like enjoying playing a game and more get this bloody thing done and out of the way so I can get to playing Sly 3 and then God of War 3. If I hadn't set out to beat these three trilogy's (Sly, GOW and PoP) then I really doubt I would of kept playing. It's not terrible by any means, I just found it hard to care about all the drab and dark locations and the silly characters and the who gives a toss plot. Oh, and the music was absolutely atrocious, who the fuck had the idea to have rock music in the game? It's bloody stupid. I'll stop now. The game really got on my nerves. _________________

Dead Space 2.
I enjoyed the first game better than this overall. It's a worthwhile sequel and does improve notably in certain fields. It's even less scarier than the first which really wasn't scary at all. Some parts are disturbing yeah but there's nothing truly frightening. I'm hoping they really up the ante in the inevitable third game of the franchise. I liked the nods to the first game.
I haven't tried out the multiplayer as of yet. I might give it a go but it doesn't look very appealing to me. _________________

I actually really like DS2 multiplayer. I am like level 8 in that and up to Chapter 6 in the SP. It's a nice refreshing change from your COD style multiplayer. Great team games and such. _________________

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom on 360.
Really enjoyable game in the end. If you can look past the slightly above average graphics, there's some very nice puzzles, backtracking (after getting new abilities) done right and a bit of Zelda and (celshaded) Prince of Persia mixed together.
The story wasn't bad either.
| spoilers wrote: | | Even got a little sad right at the end when after all that work to save the world, the poor Majin had to sacrifice himself. |
There's a menu option for DLC so hopefully something is in the works.
I'd recommend the game in general but for $34 (JB at the moment) it's a no brainer. _________________ My YouTube game videos!

Finished Tomb Raider Anniversary on the PSP. Great looking game with some very sketchy controls. By the end of the game I was considering smashing the UMD... didn't though.

Shadowman PS1. Played this when I was young thought I would revisit it. Man it was mature for the time, I was too young when I played it. Very hard to replay now because its hella ugly and everything meld's into dull brown. But the story is still epic and I was still incredibly creeped out, Jack scared the crap out of me again.

Halo Wars. Surprisingly fun. Decent story and the controls were great for a console RTS.
Don't think I'll try the campaign again (which was quite short, really), but I can see myself having the odd skirmish.

I just "finished" Pokemon Pearl.
80 hours 23 Minutes, Pokedex: 144
My final team was really, really dumb - so I died a lot and had to reload, and plan my strategies perfectly. Not that I really knew what to expect from the Elite Four when I was going into it - I just used the same team I was using to get through Victory Road, hence all the HM moves. :/
My Team:
Palkia, Lvl. 53 [Heal Block, Ancient Power, Dragon Claw, Spacial Rend]
Rapidash, Lvl. 50 [Fire Blast, Stomp, Flamethrower, Flame Wheel]
Crobat, Lvl. 54 [Dark Pulse, Wing Attack, Defog, Fly]
Mantyke, Lvl. 43 [Bounce, Ice Beam, Waterfall, Surf]
Roselia, Lvl. 44 [Mega Drain, Giga Drain, Stun Spore, Cut]
Chimecho, Lvl. 41 [Psychic, Last Resort, Astonish, Confusion]
Beating the Lucian (4th Elite Four guy) and Cynthia (The Champion) became very difficult with this team, and I ended up relying on held items to give everyone an edge - something I didn't do the entire game, since I've been so used to the Red, Blue and Yellow 'thinking'. I was really relying on getting critical hit boosts for Palkia's Dragon moves most of the final fight, except for the ones where Dragon attacks were 'not very effective...'
I'm really satisfied with my experience with the game, and I am really looking forward to Black and White _________________

I just finished Dead Space Extraction on PS3/Move.
Can't believe this was free with DS2. Totally enjoyable experience. Even though I have recently completed two Dead Space games, I am still wanting more. Fantastic franchise. _________________

Do not let the cute picture of Sackboy fool you to think this is a childish game. It is highly innovate without sacrificing fun. However, I do not recommend having a long marathon as I have tried it and the fun factor drops so it is suggested to play over a period of time, even with multiplayer (or that's just me but it's not a crime to be me, right?).
Multiplayer is fun, there are many ways to send other sackperson to a G/PG rated death, there was many ways to keep other sackperson dirty and distracting fun like shooting each other with painball or decorating a friend's hideout. However, I did come across our online session being hijacked quite a few times and one of them happen to involve a foul-mouth kid who was telling us off for a reason we did not know. We assume he was having a bad day so he hijacked our multiplayer session to release his anger? Hopefully this has been fixed.
Overall, it's innovative, interesting and is a game I reckon you need to play in short burst to get the most out of it. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Dead Space 2 (PC)
I did yet another of my 'awesome, Saturday night is free so I'm going to overdose on some gaming goodness while I can' nights. So this time it was Dead Space 2's turn, about 8 hours straight of headphone wearing worth.
Normally, I break my reviews into Graphics, Sounds, Gameplay, Multiplayer or some other facet of the game that I deem important. For Dead Space 2 I'm going to give a brief overview of the Graphics and Sounds and skip Multiplayer since it doesn't interest me.
Graphics
(on my PC) Are absolutely stunning. I can't remember the last game that used it's graphics to create such an atmospheric and visually impressive setting. Animations are also great and I couldn't fault them. Top stuff.
Sound
Much like the graphics, yet another masterpiece. The use of sound effects, music and white noise amplifies the direction of this game. Playing with headphones is another bonus as you truly feel like you are Isaac as you hear every creak, scream and haunting footstep in his nightmare. My favourite use of sound is when the music quickly hits a crescendo right when something frightening occurs (although I had a couple experiences when nothing happened and when the crescendo happened a bit before event, ruining the surprise).
Gameplay
Ultimately, the most important part of any game. Let me quickly sum up my opinion of Dead Space 2; the first five chapters are awesome, the second five repeat everything done before it and the last five are filler that made me dislike the game. For the record, I loved Dead Space 1. But... I feel that Dead Space 2 doesn't actually do anything new. It's a sequel that could be confused for an (old school pre-DLC) expansion. Throughout the entire time playing the game, all I could think is how 'I've done this before... soooo many times'. After the first few chapters, the next few are simply repeats of what happened before. Corridors, for most part, start looking the same, especially after you've been in a particular environment for a while. Set pieces repeat (room with boxes, elevator, corridor with wall gratings, etc) and after the first time, there's no shock or surprise to have when a nasty jumps out at you (although the game tries its best to keep this fresh). But even that, the 'Dead Space' element wears out; you walk into a big room, ammo all over the floor, yep, there's a big fight to have soon. That breaks the immersiveness for me. But it's not just that, the environments become a bit cliché; kindergarten:check, annoying children:check, protagonist flipouts:check, weird exploding babies:wtf.
Maybe some of you liked those, but I didn't. And then there's the ending... seriously, what happened? Maybe I wasn't following closely enough (and that's probably true, because by the tenth chapter I wanted it to be over), but there must be some loose ends with the plot (I won't spoiler it). And the excessive amount of gore; limbs flying when you stomp someone, the start when the guy slices his neck, and the end with the thing that goes in the other thing... huh? I admit, I was tired by the time I reached the end of the game, but still, did Dead Space 2 become Saw or Fahrenheit? It's like the developers took the some what serious game world they created and added some teenage angst manifestations to it. I found it bizarre and not suiting.
So that's it. I can surely bet that there are many out there that disagree with my thoughts. It's a good polished game but it does nothing new and *may* struggle to hold your attention.

Vanquish 360
Seems like yesterday I only posted this in the 'what game are you playing' thread, so yes it is a short game but for the non-stop action it delivers, I don't think I would have wanted too much more.
I called it Metal Gears of Halo in that thread. It has got inspiration and gameplay from all three of those but definitely makes it's own name for itself.
The graphics are very good. Super smooth frame rate, great detailed and well animated models and heaps of explosions and action on screen. The screens for the game prior to release and most noteably on the back of the box are full of crap though. Way too crisp and hi-res... whereas the game itself seems to be running below HD. Reminds me of a Dreamcast game in that sense.
The story and acting are both pretty average but they don't really take away from the game. More like, they stop it from being top class. To have the main guy a light bearded hero, with (an over-acted) husky voice, who constantly pulls out a cigarette for a smoke is pretty stupid but ah well, can't expect much originality these days.
Negatives aside, the game nails the controls and the gameplay and action is awesome and well worth playing.
It can be imported from the UK for around $30 so it's definitely recommended.

In my opinion that ain't HD (I only considering HD to be 'True HD'). Some other though will be staunchy opposed to my beliefs.

Jimmy's Vendetta and Joe's Adventure - Mafia II DLC
Jimmy's Vendetta totally sucks. Poorly implemented and totally pointless.
Joe's Adventure is a minor improvement. The crumby missions are still here, but some actually have you doing something different e.g. one has you driving a car that will blow up if you go below 35mph, which was interesting. That, and there are some pretty good proper story missions (such as the witness, and the supermarket) that keep it alive. Still, it's definitely a poor effort. _________________

I had a feeling there were more story missions in Joe's Adventure due to the achievement list. However I don't think I will ever see them because, as hard as I try, I simply CAN NOT beat the mission where you have to stop the van that comes out of the docks.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated nothing I have tried has worked.

That mission is an ABSOLUTE CUNT!
My tactic was to take a relatively heavy car (there are some in the carpark close to where you start - by going through the gate) and time it so that I block the first van. If you do it right, you should block both cars. Then get out and use you car as cover. Unfortunately, you can get unlucky with police and explosions, so it's not a fool proof method unfortunately. But that's how I got past in the end. _________________

Just finished up Castlevania lords of shadow on ps3. I nearly went by without purchasing this game dismissing as just another hack n slash action game. The game came up a fair bit in peoples game of the year on palgn so I decided to give it a shot. Im sooo glad I picked it up I enjoyed every minute of it and being that it's quite a lengthy game that's a lot of enjoyment. Everything about the game was so very well done from the awesome visuals some truly epic vistas to the sublime soundtrack. I actually really enjoyed the story especially how the last chapter ends, I hope to god this gets a sequel. If I had to pick a negative it's those damn chupacabras I wanted to punch the living he'll out of them! _________________

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
It's been a long time coming for me, but i finally knocked off the single player, and tbh i think i'm done with it in general.
there's a couple of achievements i probably could get if i really get bored any time soon, but aside from the one that i missed due to not being able to leave the animus after a certain point, i'm not really worried about them. (i'm not so worried about the now unobtainable - through this playthrough - one either, but i initially thought it'd contain some additional lore.)
so yeah... well AC is probably my favourite franchise new to this generation, and ACB was a great continuation of the story.
i was a little concerned when it was announced, as i thought the SP might feel tacked on to the MP, but it really is a fully realised campaign.
and one you definitely need to play before AC3, if you're in it for the story.
it's not perfect. horse-riding in particular is incredibly dodgy after the likes of Red Dead Redemption. Civilian AI is as annoying as ever, and more than once i was annoyed when Ezio (or Desmond) didn't jump in the way i expected him too.
the combination of horse riding and civilian AI did produce some entertaining situations though, especially when i was meant to be following someone on horseback, as they'd ride without regard for any pedestrians who happened to be between them, and their destination.
but i was thoroughly entertained throughout, it kept me coming back to knock off as many sidequests as i coule (which ended up being all of them - i haven't collected all the flags or treasure chests, but i never tend to go for those things anyway, as they always feel like artificially lengthening a game, to me.)
it was also kind of amusing the way things progress. It's one of my foibles that i do get wrapped up in side-quests for long periods of time, often at the detriment of the main story line. happens in pretty much every sandbox-ish title around, and with this i'd often get to the end of a 2-3 hour session and realise i didn't touch a story mission.
as such, my recruits were all graduates by the time the story graduated a "real" character, so there was a bit of "oh so that's what that means" after the fact.
likewise, i'd liberated most of Rome before the story told me how to go about liberating Rome.
i did like the sidequests though. the missions for the courtesans, thieves and mercenaries each had their own storylines of multiple linked missions. they were simplistic, but they did add to the experience of the struggle they faced.
so yeah - great game. glad to have finally finished it, and very much looking forwards to more AC titles. _________________

The Longest Journey for PC
Beat this for the second time. The last time I beat it was about 2 or 3 years ago.....
I still think this game tells the best narrative ever made for a video game. Period. And it's without a doubt in my top 5 games ever made list.
And it still holds its own in the point n click genre as well as gaming in general. I would love to see this released as a remake similar to the monkey island games. The Longest Journey/Dreamfall franchise has become a cult classic series and I'm sure a remake would prove to be very popular.
And lets not forget that Funcom still need to get off their ass and get around to finishing off the series by making the 3rd game in the trilogy.. if it ever comes out. _________________ http://bencadphotography.com/
