*clap clap* There's no reason why these maps couldn't be made available to all buyers, not just those who plonk down their cash on a preorder. I hate stuff like this.

And yet... it's Karkand... they *know* people are going to shell out for it.

I would.

I will.

I think it's more likely it's going to be the EA's ten dollar thing. If you buy it new you get the maps, buy it used you have to pay for them.

This is a right thing done wrong. I think things like the Cerberus network can ensure that they get some money off the stupidly huge second hand market in consoles. But I feel this on the PC is going to splinter some of the PC market much like euro and armoured forces splinted the bf2 online market.

I'm surprised at the amount of complaints being made in the forums I visit regarding this. My first reaction was "Holy sh*t awesome" I get to revisit BF2 maps, which I loved.

If you can't put aside $90 or less over a ten month pre-order period, then you deserve it.

I think the main reason this gets so much flak is that people have it in their heads that they deserve the full game all at once. In reality, software is one of those goods which can easily be split into partial and full packages, and in fact there are advantages to doing this in many cases, because you can sell people what they need for price X instead of selling them the entire package for price Y.

However, this doesn't apply so neatly to entertainment software, where people will generally want ALL content. The only real question here is what a "fair" price for the game and for the DLC (4 maps != expansion, IMO) is.

If we just look at pure intrinsic value, this isn't a big deal at all, especially for a long-life game like BF3, if the game is decent quality and is well supported then it's easily worth $90+$10.

Compare this to games with low replay value or tiny campaigns (MW2?) and then it's harder to justify that price.

Given the amount of free content for BC2 and the reasonable price of Vietname DLC, I don't see why anyone would be complaining here.

So... are we buying shareware or a *full product*?

I'm sorry, when I go to buy a *complete product*, I expect to be given the entire thing.

You may like it, I don't. And since I'm the master of my money, I get to choose where I spend it. Thus, it won't be on BF3.

NOWHERE is it said what the 'full product' is. This is clearly a case of PEBKAC - read before you buy. There is no false advertising here.

When I buy a car, I can pay extra to get things like a sunroof etc. When I buy a house, I can get an extra story for extra $$. When I hire a cleaner, I can get them to clean more if I pay more.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with this from an ethics, fairness or moral standpoint. It might piss you off that you need to pay more for something you want, but that's applicable to EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT out there.

The REAL issue here is that people equate EA with Evil, and therefore any time they do something you don't like, that action becomes evil in your mind. That's badly flawed logic.

It's not like they're raising the price of bread or healthcare - they're just modifying the price point of their product. You have no obligation to buy, and sulking about the price is childish and unproductive. If the price point is too high, EA will lose out in the long term, but I have no idea why this is 'wrong' to you.

1) I never said it was false advertising, I was just saying that the practice is BS
2) for me, it has nothing to do with EA. I couldn't care less if it was EA, Activision, Mum & Pops Indy Game Dev Studio or anything else, it's just a BS practice

Why? All it is is a price hike. Keep in mind that just like you, I prefer to part with less money when buying games, but I still don't see why this is 'wrong'. The only valid argument against this is that it will split the multiplayer community, which is a fair concern, but everything else seems to be people crying because of a $10 price hike. If it bothers you, buy the game second hand a few days after release for $10 off, and then buy the DLC. It still boils down to: if the game is worth the price, buy it, otherwise don't.

If you want to tackle a REAL issue, then you should be protesting about where the extra profits go. To CEOs, or to developers? That's a more valid question IMO.

So from arguments I've seen on here most people seem to agree with the video game companies when they bitch and moan about people buying second hand games as being evil and worse then piracy.

But then video game companies do something to combat that and people hate them?

I'm getting confused here.

I fail to see how offering part of a game only if you preorder stops piracy. If you're a fan of a game no matter what then it doesn't make a difference, but if you are someone who has a) other things to spend money on, and b) likes to make sure what they're buying isn't a waste of money (i.e. the game isn't as great as you/reviewers thought it would've been), then you shouldn't penalised because you didn't preorder.

I would be fine if they adopted something like releasing the preorder maps for free a month or so later for everyone who did buy the game. At least the online validation should filter out the pirates.

It's not much different from a bloody keyring or plush toy or whatever you get if you preorder.

You don't see people crying who buy it later, that they deserve their toy do you?

There's always going to be paid DLC and this is what will happen with this mappack... early orders simply get it for free.

I don't understand the whingers.

I ain't whinging cause I ain't buying it regardless, but I can understand those who do.

In this case, I don't see it as 'DLC'; I see it as part of a game that is being withheld unless you pay more. A toy is something in addition to what is being purchased.

If you want to buy it, great.
If you don't want to buy it because of this, great. It's your money.

Actually, thinking about it, it would probably be better to wait till it is released, pick it up cheaper than the regular retail (preorder) price and then buy the DLC. You might be able to save yourself a few bucks icon_smile.gif

It's just extra maps. It's not like they're withholding the final chapter of the campaign.

It's like buying the regular edition of a movie vs. the director's cut. There's more there, but nothing crucial.
