Is it possible to play japanese snes games on a pal without any modding?
Or does it need a converter to play them? I have never used famicom games before so I have no idea.

You cannot play Japanese or US (different shape anyway) SNES games on your PAL console BUT you can get a convertor or adaptor that allows you to play them. But I think they get slowed down to PAL 50hz speeds. _________________

A few things.
If you don't want to go down the converter route (which i recommend, they are temperamental and some games don't work on them anyway), you will need to install a region mod switch on the actual SNES board. Fairly simple (couple of wires, small soldering etc). This will allow you to play all SNES games, Australian/European, Japanese and U.S. As we run on the crappy PAL 50Hz system and you will need to be able to run NTSC 60Hz, otherwise the carts wont boot. It will remove the black borders and will speed the game up to it's intended rate. That's half of the job.
Then, to fit the U.S carts, you will need to do some modification to your SNES console, as they won't physically fit in (they are square, not rounded like our carts). This is easy enough (snapping some plastic tabs).
Bit of work, but well worth it. Plenty of guides out there, both written and video form. If you can't solder and don't know how, you will have to rely on adapters unfortunately.

I've been looking into this and yes the adapter is the easy way to go, but if you want better per-formants you best to install a region mod switch on the actual SNES board, it dose take some time but you'll love so much more _________________

I have the Australian (pal) SNES and I bought some Japanese pal games (same cartridge). Do I need a mod still?
