| Quote: | VG247 claims to have obtained two images of a PSP2 development prototype -- pictures that appear to have been taken with a Barbie Video Girl-quality camera. The images depict a "slider" style device with the familiar PlayStation button layout, two thumbsticks, a microphone, two cameras, and a trackpad on the back. See the other picture after the break.
The site notes that the development kit "isn't the console's final form factor" -- and then, in an update, mentions that, according to a source, Sony has already replaced this version of the dev hardware with a non-sliding version, designed to rectify an overheating problem. Which means that even if this thing is real (and we're not at all convinced it is, considering, for example, that it lacks the distinctive segmented PlayStation D-pad), it doesn't look anything like whatever the final hardware will be.
[Update 5:15pm ET: We've got some more truth gasoline to add to this rumor fire ... or something. After running the images, IGN updated its post with the following: "A development source confirmed to IGN these photos are legitimate." So, best case scenario: this is what the PSP2 dev kit looks like and a rough idea of its feature set, though the hardware (including the PSP Go-style slider) is still at the prototype phase. |

Can't wait to see PSP2 games running on this thing~ _________________

Rear trackpad? The Hell?
Could also lend credence to the PSP = phone concept what with having two cameras and mic and stuff.

The burning question; if they adapt the PSPGo-esque model again, will they stick with UMD?
Even as a render of a leaked dev kit, I'm not seeing a slot on that thing... _________________

I doubt Sony will stick with the PSP Go shell (it's a great device but still a flop saleswise) and those analogue sticks are in nasty positions/groves.
I also doubt they will include any sort of disc based media. If it is indeed as powerful as the PS3, then it will need a sizable disc. So I don't think they will bother and just go digital.
What I do know is that it will be heavily geared towards anti-priacy.
Playstation phone idea to me is still silly unless it can play PSP games. If it can though, I still it doing pretty well. _________________ Shin J Leon.

I don't think they'll go digital download only either though LeonJ, because personally I think that's why the GO flopped. Sure a lot of hardcore gamers like DD, but the vast majority of people do not. It would be severely damaging to have no physical alternative. My thought is, they'll sell games in stores on some kind of memory device, like an MSD or an SD card, as they come in fairly large sizes for a small price nowadays and ran faster than UMDs.
As for the design, Sony themselves confirmed there are two different developer kits: One that looks like the PSP1000/2000/3000 and one that looks like the GO. The leaked pics are of the GO version, but that doesn't mean it's the winning design (although I think it probably will be, people seem to like slidey phones, personally I prefer the classic non-sliding one). _________________

Slider devices usually make for better portability though, which is a win in my book.
I do agree about those thumbsticks though, they are really awkwardly-placed... _________________

I do hope you are correct Peveus. I don't like digital in the hands of traditional game companies (Ninty, M$, Sony) because they don't really believe in *deals* like itune store, steam etc.
I'm very interested how they do approach a *hard* copy distrubution though. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Not digital only reportedly : 'Retail games on the NGP will come on new physical media in the form of flash memory-based cards'
Weird but makes sense.

This should be a new rule for any game developer making something on a touch based device.
Run your slogan by a 12 yearold first, if they start giggling GET A NEW SLOGAN.
Interested to see were this goes, the PSP was kind of a dissapointment for me. _________________

Actually I think that pretty much sums up why the PSP was a dissapointment for me, they treated game development on it as if it was a home console that you were sitting on your couch playing, and not as a portable game consoles with portable games.
I mean I loved Uncharted, but it's the kind of game I finished in two sittings, I can't imagine doing that on a hand held. Same reason I'm more excited for Lylat Wars then Ocarina on the 3DS.
Oh well hopefully these are just tech demos to show what it can do and not a look at the actual games comming out for it. _________________
