I currently only have completed videos shot on proper equipment but I'm in the process of a short film for a local film festival. I'll post it up in 2 weeks or so when it's done. Don't expect much though lol. I am not putting the same effort into this compared to professional or academic work.

Was just offered a deal at Clive Peeters:

Canon 1000D with EF-S 18-55mm IS lens for $600.

Seems like a really good deal.

Thoughts? Anyone? Thanks.

Edit: These were $493 at Clive Peeters online in October last year. Hmm. Guess not such a good price after all.

That lens has an RRP of $399 though! Is that still the case?

That's the standard single kit lens yeah? That lens is under $200 delivered online

In other news, my 100mm macro lens turned up today from TopBuy. Shipping is not cheap, but they FedEx'd it out pretty quickly so I'm not unhappy with the extra cost. Looking forward to trying it out tonight =)

At the end of the day, that is still a good price for someone who wants to go in store, pick one up and have a good night sleep not worrying about imported stock's warranty.

I buy all my gear from overseas as its dirt cheap, and canon lens's provide an international warranty. Body's however I'm a bit concerned about, and would need some reassuring before I make the jump (even if they are $800 cheaper)

have a look at your local office works, i went down to my one today and picked up a pentax K-x (recommended by Spanca) for $475 with the DA18-55mm lens, i've been look to start photography as a new hobby recently so i've been reading alot of reviews and comparisons and from what i've read the K-x is a much better camera then the 1000D

Tomorrow i have a morning shoot - here is hoping i can pull it off.

I'm not very good at making things look pretty - let alone - 3 women.

That being said it will be a great learning experience - considering im being paid in chicken - I dont feel to insane an amount of pressure.

That being said id love to see it work out.

Wish me luck!

^ Good luck to your young Mick, may the force be with you!

But no seriously, as long as you just approach it casually, talk to your subjects etc I'm sure everyone will have a good time.

I also have a shoot lined up for either Tuesday or Wednesday but have yet to scout a location. bleh.

Just make sure you get them facing the sun, wearing at least four layers of makeup, and smear vaseline on the lens to make it look softer and hide any imperfections and they'll love the result.

Nice. Which store did you get it at that price for? Looks like it's $499 at most Officeworks stores.

Anyway, after reading your post I went back and found Spanca's post on it, then went and read up on Whirlpool. Seems like it trumps the 1000D and even holds its own against the 500D. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxkx/page21.asp

Pretty sure I'm heading to Officeworks today to pick one up. Never thought I'd go for a camera that uses AA batteries either, but again Spanca made it seem like the better choice (even though those Eneloops plus charger are going to cost me about another $30 on top icon_razz.gif ).

Let me just say Eneloops are hands down the most awesome battery I've ever used. I have a set powering my sb600 and I've used it for at least 2 months now and STILL have yet to run out of charge. Also recycle time between shots is insane.

Picked up the Pentax K-x today! Thanks to all for the help! I really mean it.

Now I just need a bag and a faster SDHC card (to try out that 720p video). icon_smile.gif

I'm curious what you guys use for backing up and displaying your photos.

I've been using Google's Picasa to share some highlight pics but my free 1GB is almost used up and I've deemed it too expensive to upgrade the storage to back up all my data (around 100 GB total for $60/yr).

Currently weighing up my options between Flickr ($25/yr), SmugMug ($40-60/yr) or going it alone with Amazon Web Services ($0.1 / GB / month). Anyone using them? Pros? Cons?

In terms of backup, I put my important stuff on my 1tb converted fallout lunch box Hard drive. My work that I want to share I have a pro flickr account. I'm not sure if it still applies but if you make a new account you get a free ebook printed from snapfish. Sure you pay handling of $5.95 but the end product is pretty shmick and its rrp is $39.95. So flickr was a bit of a no brainer for me.

I'm not sure of how much exposure you will get from smugmug/amazon web services but Flickr comes with a stats counter that not only tracks the number of times people view your photos but it also shows what is being searched for when people get to your pictures, times photos has been viewed etc etc. and from what I've seen, my stuff has gone through some interesting trends. Eg. A simple 2 second picture of a coke can I took with an iphone is getting more views daily than a carefully composed shot that took 30 minutes to light correctly on my d90. icon_confused.gif

I've always used Photobucket, but is Flickr better?

I tried it out a few months ago but I didn't quite understand it's layout and the fact that it was run by Yahoo scared be off a bit.

Sorry I should have said: I definitely want off-site backup of my photos, which makes online storage the simplest option (I'm not messing about with storing multiple drives at a friend's or family's home). I'm a little paranoid after being broken into and a lot of computing/gaming gear getting stolen - including portable harddrives.

What does Photobucket offer in terms of storage? I can't see a description on their site
