^ I thought about that the other day. Heard "We desperately need rain" all too often in the last few years. Not funny that it went down like this, just an observation.

There are some truly tragic tales starting to get told… Was watching the news earlier this evening and heard about a family that was caught out – A Mum and Dad just managed to get their kids into the ceiling moments before a wall caved in and they got swept away to their deaths. The children survived.

^ Heard about that from someone at work. Effed up.

Got a text back from the person I know up there... they were sandbagging all day... they said it's A LOT worse than what they are showing on TV. Always the way. This is why I don't turn the damn TV on. Lies, lies, lies.

They are also being told to prepare for king tides tomorrow, more flash floods following that, and then a cyclone that's building off the coral coast and due to hit on Australia Day.

Michael of Brisbane And Craigo. I suggest you check the Wivenhoe Dam capacities. There is one for storage capacity and another for flood mitigation. There was also no Somerstet Dam in the 1860's. How can that flood be related to 1974? Storms don't create floods. Prolonged rain in the catchment does. Did either of you grow up in SEQ? Did Newman grow up in Brisbane? It may happen again one day. That is quite true. Why create panic among people now? I'll remind you both again in May after it's all over and Brisane has had it's normal summer rain and storms and NO FLOOD has occured.

Luckily I live on a hill so my house isn't effected, but it's seriously bad.

My old house is currently underwater. Old housemates aren't in a good spot at the moment.

Roads are cut off everywhere. It's just..unlike anything I have seen before, and I really feel for all the people who are effected by this. Tried to help out with sand bagging today but was turned away. I guess it's good that they have more than enough people to help, i just feel helpless.

My workplace has shut up shop for the week as well. Too many people are being flooded in and cut off from work. Going to be a lot of work to do come Monday.

Oh lawds, I laughed a lot.

Good news everyone! Half the street I last lived on in Brisbane is flooded, the place should escape flooding though. Kinda wish I was back up there - I'm one of those freaks that loves displays of nature and this is right up my alley; and it would have been an excellent time to do volunteer work and see if I remember stuff from my SES days.

A good friend of mine is in Caboolture, I think he took my suggestion of turning his ute in to a paddle boat seriously.

EDIT: Although they might have had to change back to the strict rules with more people coming in, not sure.

Still doesn't help the scores of livestock that family have lost. My mum being into horses has been going on about how much livestock have already been found dead as some people have returned back to their properties. People have had to just start cutting fences down and letting what are essentially pets to them run off in hope that they'll find some high ground or refuge somewhere.

Sadly a lot of these people won't see them again. icon_sad.gif

Funny that you say that... I've got family living there that decided to stay on their property even though the place has been evacuated. By all accounts they seem to think that their 'fouby' (four wheel drive for those outside of the area) will keep them safe... *facepalm*

why do people even bother.

It is one of the best scams in the world, and everyone just cops it.

You can tell they go through and find the most likely scenario and carefully word it out of the policies...

what a load of uninformed ****. Already, suncorp and the other insurers habe taken a massive hit in share prices. because they're going to have to pay up. In this instance, being insured is going to save the livelihoods; stave off financial ruin fro a lot of people.

this article dated DECEMBER 16th last year:

http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/lord-mayor-campbell-newman-warns-brisbane-residents-of-holiday-floods/story-e6freoof-1225971757071

BRISBANE residents are being warned to take out flood insurance and move precious possessions out of homes in known flood zones with predictions the holiday season will be marred by disaster.

did you even read the post before mine....god you are a tool....i must protect the corporations!

If you read it, it says that someone rang their insurer and insurer said too bad you are not covered for river breach.
So yes go, run and hand money over to insurers.
Please tell me how not being insured for river breach even though you are insured is going to stave off financial ruin.....if the water reached subbastards house....his insurer has openly stated he is not covered for it.
Now tell us he is lying and your precious corporations are gods.

PHEW!! He's safe! Next?
(a little humour to keep the spirit and hope alive for us up here)

Anyone who has clothes, bedding, toiletries and shoes have been asked to take them down to the crisis centres.
The biggesst request is thongs....men's thongs in particular. So send your spare pluggers people! If they receive too much we'll find some use for them...Thong throw comps FTW icon_biggrin.gif
Also toys and boardgames for the kids to lift their spirit.

And to update on the pet thing....Vets/ pet hospitals/RSPCA all around the higher areas of brisbane are taking in pets. My sister's surgery is nearly out of cages and enclosures to house these, but there are still some who are able to take them! Check the counsil and flood relief websites for the list of locations.

THEMAN are you Infested Jibbs?

edit: Please tell me the names of the insurance companies that will cover a river bank breach flood event besides Suncorp? I've spoken to quite a few business owners in the same situation just because they back on to the river.

Everyone reacts and feels very differently about this sort of thing. Yes there has been a lot of devastation and lives lost and thats horrendous.

But, there are also sharks and snakes that is both interesting as it is a threat.

And when people put things like floaties on a statue - that is someone reacting and finding a lighter side of a cruddy situation and there's really nothing wrong with that. It isn't offensive and some people are craving that kind of light-relief in these times.

A man on the news before was interviewed about how his wedding has to be postponed because it was scheduled to be in one of the churches in the city - and not a moment later people were on twitter ripping him to shreds. "How can you be so selfish caring about your wedding when lives have been lost". He wasn't even complaining, he was just stating a fact that the wedding had to be postponed and people jumping down his throat doesn't help anyone or anything and floods twitter with unnecessary bullshit and clogging the qldfloods hashtag.

While there are lots of personal losses and individual reactions, its all valid and everyone is entitled to feel what they feel.

Except looters.

It's rumoured there's a mass underwater grave at Grantham.... people, families in cars that were trapped and have perished. I cannot imagine what that little community is having to face...absolutely devastating. It hasnt been confirmed yet....

And let's not forget what's happening in Brazil, where i have a friend in the middle of it who has contacted me to see how we're holding up! Bless her!

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/americas/01/12/brazil.floods/index.html?hpt=T2

And apparently in the US nobody has a clue about what is happening down here. The media don't tell us what we need to know, plain and simple.
