In no particular order:
- Rock Band 3
It's almost like a broken record every time something Harmonix puts a game out. Definitive music game to own. Pro Guitar is amazingly awesome to play.
- Bad Company 2
I have a s**thouse PC, but I can still appreciate how awesome this game really is. The sense of being in a proper war is there- watching you and 15 other people run up a hill to an objective together is something that is hard to experience in an FPS elsewhere.
- Medal of Honor Multiplayer
I thoroughly enjoyed this multiplayer for the brief duration it was played. The Attack/Defend maps were quite fun and seeing teamwork occur in a game aimed at the Call of Duty KD-before-winning crowd was quite a sight to behold.
- Split/Second
Burnout with more explosions. The feeling of driving on a sinking aircraft carrier with planes sliding off infront of you is f**king crazy.
- F1 2010
I didn't think this would be as fun or as good as Dirt 2, but I was very wrong. Beautiful visuals, cars are very fun to drive and putting Vettel into a wall is worth the price of entry. _________________

1. Game Dev Story (iphone)
Initially thought this wouldn't work as a game as there are so many intricacies in making a game but it simplifies everything and has that 1'll bet with my next go i can make a number 1 game .
2. Need for speed: hot pursuit
Great game, arcadey feel, I love the huge levels and the great soundtrack. The mulitplayer is heaps fun.
3. Heavy Rain.
Amazing game, really blew my mind when it came to graphics and great gameplay mechanics.
4. Starcraft 2.
Tried to get my hands dirty with starcraft 1 but never got the hang of it. Though sc2 is heaps of fun to watch and play. If there is one game that will take forever to master it will be this one. _________________

Oh wow cool thread. In order:
1) Rock Band 3
2) Donkey Kong Country Returns
3) Doodle Jump
4) Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Couldn't think of a 5th, as these are all I've bought this year and played constantly. _________________

5) Heavy Rain: I felt it lived up to the hype. It's so good to see some developers out there willing to take a risk. I liked a lot about this game, I really became consumed by the need to make sure I saved Shaun, some kid in a videogame. It's a game that all PS3 owners need to rent at the very least.
4) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: The true sequel to Snake Eater. I only wish it were on PS3 so I could actually make use of the multiplayer component. Like in Portable Ops, I liked sinking time into recruiting soldiers and upgrading equipment as much as possible.
3) Red Dead Redemption: Awesome game. I grew up watching Westerns and still remember the day when I thought Maddog McRee was the greatest Western game I'd ever played. Mexico felt a little slow to me but it didn't ruin the game. While some didn't like the slow build up to the ending, I thought it was perfect. I could sense what was imminent, which made the bonding much more special.
2) Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: I just finished this tonight and I was tempted to put it #1 but I just can't. It's very much a case of "keep playing, it gets better!" The start was slow and frankly, quite boring IMO. Polar opposite to the finale. What an ending too.
1) Mass Effect 2: Apart from the end boss fight which was a let down, this game delivered. Bioware deserve the praise received for ME2, it's a real gem. _________________

OK SO RANKINGS:
Inlcudes this topics votes only and many of you did not rank them so - ranked by mention in top 5 (must be in top 5 - excludes notable inclussions):
Donkey Kong Country returns (9)
Heavy Rain (11)
AC: brotherhood (12)
Red dead redemption (13)
Mass effect 2 (16)
and if based on ranking (no rank provided = automatic equal 5th) and a minimum 3 voters and using the magic of rank averaging and acknowleging the lies of statistics we come up with:
mass effect 2
red dead redemption
donkey kong country returns
Bioshock 2
starcrat 2 as GOTY year
Personally I'd stick with the first list as an unranked top 5........ _________________

Bit of a nostalgic year for me really, spent most of my time playing genres that were arguably more popular over a decade ago than they are today (shmups, platformers and RTS, oh my?).
10. Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) - Not a great game by any standards really, I'm just in love with the graphics, music and the battle/upgrade system, and is the only JRPG I've played in the last couple of years.
9. Mass Effect 2 (360) - Improved in just about every aspect over the first, which is probably my favourite story-driven game this gen.
8. Espgaluda II (360) - The best that the shmup genre had to offer this year
7. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (360/PS3/PC) - Just edges out over Blur for its racing aspect, very simple, fast paced game that uses the best friend integration system that I have ever seen, which becomes the basis of the game. Awesome.
6. 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3) Charm up the wazoo, this took me right back to where I started with the original Zelda. Vibrant and unique graphics, a freakishly catchy chiptune soundtrack, and secrets galore made this probably the most straight up 'fun' game for me this year (except for a couple of the dungeons)
5. Alan Wake (360)
4. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (PS3/360/PC)
3. Super Meat Boy (PS3/360/PC) It has the same abbreviation as Super Mario Brothers for a reason, as it's easily the slickest 2D platformer to come along since. Tougher than Chuck Norris, this game suffers from the 'just one more go' syndrome, which just fuels the fire for the inevitable rage quit. Good times, good times.
2. Bayonetta (PS3/360) Easily the most insane game I've ever played in probably my most favourite genre of them all.
1. Starcraft 2 (PC) The first RTS I've played since the original Red Alert series is my number 1 for the year. There's nothing really new to offer in the genre, it doesn't look all that flash, but it offered up a unique story structure which I had never seen before and loved, in its research and unit upgrade system. This game also unleashed the most intense competitive gamer in me upon its release, it was just pure adrenalin whenever there was a game winning battle in it's incredibly addictive online ladder system. I even went as far as creating a PALGN tournament for weekly matches, but that didn't turn out so great. It was always quite popular and seems the most popular in here based on emech's post, it really should be resurrected one day
Edit: Damn, forgot descriptions for Alan Wake and Battlefield, too tired to bother doing now.
