So I'm turning 22, working casual and thinking now may be a good time to perhaps look into getting private health insurance? Ive had a look online but its all so overwhelming. I really have no idea of where to even begin to start looking.
I also understand with certain services, there is waiting periods before claims can be made and from what I can gather, you can only claim back a certain percentage of what you paid. In addition there are limits to how much you can claim.
Basically I well true well that I need some dental work done, perhaps even wisdom teeth removed but that can probably wait.
If anyone has any suggestions or could provide an insight into what I should look for that would be awesome. _________________

Im with HCF. They're a bit pricier but they do have HCF dental centers and the dental health care when you get it covered, under your plan = VERY affordable.
I had a bit of oral work done - teeth capped and bleached and it was all LOL cheap.
compartively, a mate who had no health cover had to go see a dentist and to fix a tooth, it was $400 bucks. I think my teeth things cost less than that. (and I get 2-3 free checkups/clean a year).
The thing is with major dental you have to see if you have to wait 2-6 months. Sometimes, they do "waive" waiting period offers. I'd call around.
www.iselect.com.au <--- if you want to find prices, and they'll call you to help you (commission from the healthfund but doesn't affect your premium). _________________

Shop around and get some quotes; compare what services you're likely to want/need and cover yourself as best as possible. The key is to get it as soon as possible to erode any waiting periods.
I can state from personal experience that putting private health insurance on the back-burner leads to lots of problems. _________________

Man you sound like me. I'm also 22 and working casual. 5 months ago I joined HBF. My first wisdom tooth has gone through and 2 more, according to the xray I did today are growing. So far, for checkup, cleaning and xrays I have paid $160 whereas the actual invoice is like $350 but HBF is paying 60% of that.
Definitely worth it. Also boo to wisdom teeth, the one I need to get removed is close to my nerves and the I'll need to pay $140 for the removal procedure. _________________

Unless you are earning a whole heap (above 70k+) you only really need extras which covers dental, optical, physio, etc. Private hospital cover is more for piece of mind but isn't really necessary unless you need it to avoid the medicare surcharge.
Iselect is a good place to start as stated above but bear in mind that their search does not cover all possible health funds.

This thread has come along at a perfect time as I am in the same situation as you Zhou.
I'm going to call around on Monday and get quotes from the leading companies. I'll keep you posted here. _________________

iselect.com.au (is really good).
^ dloiscute, you should have a look. They get a commision if you sign with someone so they'll do everything to get you a deal. _________________

Nice thread. This reminds me that I need to get private health; I'm going to get jacked by the taxman this year. I say the aforementioned sentence every year.

Also if you are working for a big organization full time you might be able to get some special corporate deal at a discounted rate with a specific health fund. Best check with your employer.
