*gasp* Faxanadu... that game is awesome! I played it when I was still a little kid and I know I really enjoyed it. I had forgotten the title of the game, all I remembered for sure was that
--SPOILER-- wrote:
the game starts with the main character walking to a creepy-looking city and it ends with him walking away from the city again, which then looks like a much better place.

I just checked it on YouTube, this is totally the game I was thinking of! I'll make sure not to forget this game's name ever again. ^^

I still remember tunes from that, and the blinking... oh the blinking!

Rad game, and as unforgiving as any out at the time.

Well, it looks like I'm going to be giving up my job and full-time gaming just to get through all of the 8-16-bit era games on the list next year! icon_lol.gif But yeah, the next step would be 32-64 bit era. I think there'd be less games worth playing, but generally I think they'd take longer to play through so that might be another year's worth. Don't know, perhaps 2012 will be 32-128-bit eras. And then 2013 can be the year when I catch up on all the games I've missed in the past 2 years! icon_lol.gif Oh well, at least by 2013 we'll probably be up to the 3rd version of the 3DS and it'll be half the price...

Thought of a few other retro games I once played, just throwing these out here (not saying they should be added to TC's already tight schedule xP).

Solstice (NES): pretty much a love-it-or-hate-it type of game. I think it's failry well-known, but if not just check this: <click>

Solstice also had a sequel for SNES, known as Equinox. But that game is even harder, a lot longer, and even more of a love-it-or-hate-it case (I personally like it considerably more than Solstice). But while Solstice is a finish-in-one-day game, you'd probably have to be using a guide if you'd want to finish Equinox in just one week.

And lastly; Rygar (NES). Also a finish-in-one-day game.

Lol, back then having fairly lengthy games with no save or password feature seemed to be acceptable. Jurassic Park (SNES version, which I see is on the list) is another good example of that. It's quite a long game, but you had to finish it in one sitting. I was so proud when I first finished it way back then. I sure wouldn't have the time or patience for that anymore...

Ah Solstice. I remember finishing that game. I was so proud of myself when I did. I never finished Equinox. Come to think, it is hard to come by that game - quite a rare title.

Hey Irvyne, if you do ever decide to play through the PS1/N64 era. I wouldn't mind it if you played through Croc;

One of my favourite games ever, I wish it would become popular again so they can make more but yeah, I still have this game to play icon_smile.gif

I don't remember how old I was -7 or 8, maybe- but when I first went to the store with my parents to get the game, we were told "Sorry, this game is much too difficult for someone so young, I can't sell this to you". They bought me the game later from another store (I made sure not to show myself, lol). I mean, sure, it's a hard game. But hey, I did finish it eventually. Too difficult for someone so young... pfft!

OMG this is a game I forgot about until I read your post.I read the name and I thought to myself "hey I reckon that's one of the games I played on my uncles NES." After looking it up on youtube and seeing a not very clear, partial pic of the box cover, I knew straight away it was the game I thought it was.But I didn't remember how the game looked till I watched a bit of one of the gameplay video's.

Wow so now I know the first RPG I ever played. It was actually one of the first games I ever played.

I only played it for a few minutes though I reckon.Being very young and having never played video games before (except maybe Game & Watches), I had NO idea how to play it.

I love Equinox to death, I also loved Solstice. It wasn't that easy (it can be finished quickly enough but that's only if you know what you're doing) some of the wand pieces are pretty brutal.

It was another one of those games that I sat and watched my grandad play when I was visiting them and was amazed at how quickly he powered through it. He was also the person who showed me how to complete the final dungeon in Zelda II and Faxanadu for that matter.

I'd love to see someone beat Zelda 2 these days. That was hardcore compared to Solstice and Faxanadu. I'd almost go as far as saying Faxanadu was fairly easy as far as NES games go.

I seem to remember dying A LOT while trying to get through Death Mountain, with the evil giant axe-weilding rats. It is a very, very hard game. The last boss (practically impossible) is easy though if you just stay in the corner and keep swiping from a crouched position. I have only beaten Zelda 2 once, but I intend to do it again!!

Week 2's completed, just updated the blog with scores & video. The cool thing about these early games is that they don't take that long to play. Even Super Mario can be completed in an hour or two, depending on whether or not you take warp zones.

^ Interesting, I learned something new about Super Mario Bros. Famous as it may be, I didn't know about that hidden -1 level until I saw it in your vid. Now I've been looking up more info about it. Cool glitch! And nice vids too.

I could probably still get up to the end castle, simply because I still remember all the crap that's damn near impossible to know (like the stupid dude that lives in the forest, I also remember the correct way to get the hammer on Death Mountain).

The final dungeon would take me freaking hours though, stupid craploads of dead ends and stuff.

When I watched my grandad I remember the Faxanadu end dungeon being really lame, mainly because of the retarded "you have to fly up ONE of these screens that looks exactly the same as about 10 other screens in this dungeon".

Also when I was a kid I used to always get stuck in the mist area as there's a ladder that's really hard to see and I'd always miss it. Man, now I want to play it aqain.

Love it, happy memories, rather solid gameplay with slight differences between the character selection as opposed to "tits?" and "no tits?" which plagued so many games who simply wanted to be different with "no you can play as females!" it's hardly any bad because it may be a copy or it may be "different" because hell, different can be good as opposed to a smattering of sequels that is the same game with the number 2.
