Hey PALGNers! Thought I'd pop in a link to my blog that I've set up for next year, the Year of Retro Gaming.
The basic idea is that I'm going to spend next year replaying my collection of old games and seeing how well (or how badly) they've aged. What would really make it awesome is if other people were playing the games along with me. Check out the list and see if there's any that ignite a memory or two.

Good luck bro.

OH FUCK YEAH! This game is like the golden god of gaming. I would rate it as the best JRPG of all time bar none. My god I would love to actually own a copy. _________________

As someone who had there JRPG cherry popped with Chrono Trigger and thinks it's an amazing game.
Yes Terranigma is better.
Terranigma is quiet simply fucking amazing. The only reason it doesn't receive the accolades it so rightly deserves is cause it never got a US release and was only released in Pal territories. _________________

Speaking of Terranigma; given that Illusion of Time/Gaia is also on the list, I'm a bit surprised to see Soul Blazer is not on the list. Those 3 games are considered to belong together (IoT has a direct reference to SB and Terranigma has that secret area where they refer to the game as IoT2). Iirc, all three games also have a dog with the same name.
But yeah, nice list of games, I recognise several great games I've played before. Come to think of it, no PLOK? I loved that game, cool platformer for SNES with great music too. Quite challenging, though.
Yup, I can still enjoy a good old-fashioned retro game.
Ah, memories...

Hey Xernova, thanks for reminding me of Soul Blazer and Plok. I'll put them on the list.
(I'm beginning to look at it and realise there's no damn way I'll be able to play through all of these games in a year... I've got 53 weeks there for crying out loud!) Still, there might be enough crap there that I'll be able to just skip some when I realise they're not fun to play.

After you get the hang of the megaman games, by the time you get up to 3 onwards you can knock em over pretty quickly. (Like in a day depending on how frustrated you get at the castles at the end) So those shouldn't be too bad for ya. _________________

Yeah, I've finished every Mega Man game at least 8-10 times, so I should be able to bowl them over super-quick.

Much agreed with the Terranigma love, heres one of the BEST videogame tunes you will ever hear.
I turned on the game just to hear it. But yeah, what I would do for Square Enix to remake the game in 3D...probably wouldn't be able to do the game the justice it deserves.

Have any of the Terranigma/Illusion of Gaia/Soul Blazer/Granstream been released again? Supposedly the company that made them 'Quintet' is in a weird state of flux where no one knows if they exist or not. Might be a rights problem.

Wow, listening to that music got me totally pumped to jump back into Terranigma. Shame I'll have to wait about a year! I'm looking forward to playing the other two in the "trilogy" as well. I never played them before.

Illusion of Time was a freaking fantastic game, one of the best isometric action titles I've ever played. You're in for a real treat with this one, Hell I can't count the number of times I played and finished this game back in the day.
I can't really remember Soul Blazer though, I know i played it but I don't think I finished it, and I don't remember anything about it other than the name being really familiar.

COol idea, good luck getting through them though! I think you'll find that most of them will have aged terribly and will be a struggle to get through, I find that even with my N64 games!
Looking forward to hearing progress. _________________

Was soul Blazer the one were you could change from the normal dude to like a dark knight type charecter? Or was that Illusion?
I could never really get into that one. _________________

^ The one where you can change into a Dark Knight is Illusion of Time. Soul Blazer is... uh, well, the one where the world is basically dead and you travel through dungeons fighting various enemies which come from "portals" (or whatever). Once all the enemies from such a portal are defeated, it will change and then stepping on it will restore something in the world (i.e. something of the area the dungeon is linked to). Eh, I can't explain it better than that... should be good enough to recognise the game if you've ever played it. ^^;

Did anyone play Granstream saga? The fourth game in the series (ps1)? I think it came out here, meant to be the best one.

I own it, actually threw it in last night since I fluffed an SO2 save and yeah polygonal efforts don't exactly age all that great these days, let alone polygonal efforts where the characters don't have faces largely because the camera angle is top down so there was no need for them in the few close ups of interaction with other NPC's. Character art has faces but the in game models do not which just screams laziness to me, same with the voice acting in the cutscenes, it's like individuals just read out lines for a pay cheque and buggered off to do something else far more worthwhile.
It's also pretty much a cliche doom & gloom story with floating continents sinking due to disappearances so the plucky hero must meet similarly labeled people to save teh world! So replay is a bit "low" as well.
Terrangima though, I still love it to death, although I'm disappointed not to see Faxanadu on the list, then again it was the first game we got on our NES so maybe I'm just being nostalgic myself.

OK then, Faxanadu's been added to the list. I seem to have vague memories of ads for it playing on TV, but I don't think I ever played it.

Just as an aside, it's worth grinding on the first demon thing so you can buy the Death spell (there's a spot on the left you can stand where it can't hit you) as it makes the early parts of the game a whole lot easier.
