What kind of makes me sick though, is at worst assange commited a minor crime (The fact that the condom broke during consensual sex and he kept going is the actual crime) we have a massive man hunt with interpol putting out a warrent on his arrest based on dodgy evidence that the swiss police want him.

Roman Polanski drugged and raped a 13 yearold, admited it. Pled guilty. Fled the country and moved to Sweeden who refused to extradite him to the US.

There's no way this can stick. Surely America realize that the eyes of the world are on them with this.

Sure, it will make them look bad. But Wikileaks makes them look bad on a regular, recurring basis.

This reminds me of the first scenes of The Matrix when Agent Smith and his goons are threatening Neo talking about Morpheus (Assange) as the world's most dangerous terrorist..

..have we somehow forgotten about Al Quaida?? 9/11???

I like how rather than using wikileaks as an indicator to clean up there act, they should just shut him up instead and go back to being unaccountable arseholes

I stopped thinking about al qaeda a while ago

Interesting article about how the whole wikileaks thing shows that the fight against piracy is completely fucked.

https://brendanscott.wordpress.com/2010/12/07/cablegate-shows-copyright-as-the-emporers-new-clothes/

Quote:
In the course of a week an astounding array of extra-judicial force has been brought against Wikileaks with mind boggling swiftness:

* they were kicked from Amazon
* then kicked from their French hosting provider
* then their paypal account was suspended
* their mastercard payments have been stopped
* their Swiss bank accounts have been suspended
* Ecuador offered them asylum, then withdrew the offer (join the dots)
* they were DDOSed
* their domain name was revoked
* a dead arrest warrant against their public face has been revived and re-issued
* they’ve had death threats made against them and their legal team
...
How can anyone take the copyright proposition seriously anymore? This is raw power, exercised by not just any old government, but by a very motivated Superpower – and one which is aided by other governments large and small who also have a joint interest is keeping diplomatic cables secret. If this raw power can’t contain this information how could copyright holders backed only by a Copyright Act possibly do so? How is it possible to argue for extensions to the Act other than on the basis of vengeance?

What does Wikileaks have to do with piracy?

Basically it's saying, if the american government trying to crack down on a distributed system of spreading information really can't do shit, despite seizing domain names, scareing off any company that wants to work with them and doing everything in there power to shut them down and failing.

Then what hope do copyright holders have of stopping people pirating using similar distributed systems? They don't have anywhere near the same might as the entire US government. But for the pirates it's pretty easy to use the same distributed systems that wiki leaks uses (like Torrents)

Ah, OK. I understand now. But I don't agree.
The eople who mirror Wikileaks people are far more determined and skillful than a random pirate.

The vast majority of pirates just search "download (insert title here)" into Google or run a search on a torrent site like TPB. When it starts to become hard to find these things, most people give up. There are those (whiny 12 year old) "hackers" that are members of private trackers and underground forums, who won't be stopped, but the vast majority aren't that tech-savvy.

Case in point: When Limewire shut down recently, my sister immediately started buying music (until someone tells her about uTorrent). Think she's some kind of exception to a rule? Well, the most popular DS Flash Cart among everyone I know is the R4 (My friend and I have Acekards, and one other friend has a DSone, every single other person I know either has an R4 or no flashcart at all). 'Nuff said. That is the type of person the copyright holders are dealing with.

Sure some people will turn away from piracy, but the real 'hubs' where piracy occurs will continue. A lot of the time these communities are very, very dedicated and will often utilise the same sort of tactics that Wikileaks has used in order to stay online. Look at The Pirate Bay, they've been raided, had funding channels shut-down, their administrators arrested and sentenced and now had their domain name taken from them. Yet they're still running.

When it comes to the internet, the information war cannot be fought using 20th century laws, using 20th century methods. If these governments want the leaks to stop, they should be looking at their own security and staff rather than shooting the messenger. Though it's easier to try and shoot the messenger, when it comes to the internet, that very messenger can become many millions of messengers in many different forms.

Piracy is similar in a way, the RIAA and MPAA have realised that throwing the book at every website that pops up is futile, so many of the member corporations have taken huge steps to make their content far more convenient and available than if it was pirated. They tried the strongarm DRM approach, but when the supposedly infallible DRM on BluRay discs was cracked in a little over a month, a lot of media companies quickly realised that while they might have a team of clever developers, there's a world of equally clever, if not smarter developers there ready to reverse engineer their security.

I think the bit in brackets is the important bit.

Yeah when Napster or Limewire shuts down a lot of people stop pirating.

For a while. Then a new system of file sharing pops up like torrents and they start again. If torrents ever manage to be shut down completely someone will come up with a new way and yeah it will be pretty small for a while and then it will explode again.

The people who mirror wiki leaks are more determined then your random pirate sure. But the random pirates would be more like the equivalent of the people that browse wiki leaks to see whats on there. The people mirroring it would be more like the people that run pirate bay etc who are a lot smarter and more determined then most people give them credit for.

Hmmm, you two make good points.

I guess there isn't much anyone can to stop piracy in the long piracy, with the exception of games on gaming consoles, of course (I mean, the DSi and PS3 still haven't been hacked properly yet; next gen will likely be much, much tougher to crack)

You can buy a USB dongle to plug into your PS3 to jailbreak it for like 15 bucks? It's well and truly been hacked.

Anyway back to wikileaks stuff. Recent Cables show
US Private securit force provided drugs and underage boys as sex toys to be auctioned to highest bidder for Afghan Bachi boys partys

Uh... holy shit.

Yes, but no.

That USB dongle that you use to "hack" your PS3 was actually created by Sony for maintenance purposes and then leaked. So it wasn't really hacked in the truest sense of the word, as the dongle is simply a clone of official hardware.

What's more disgusting is they were caught out doing a very similar thing 10 years ago... and I don't want to know what else they were involved in.
Why is the government still funding these people? I have no idea as to what they have to gain.

Haha... yeah it does...

I think the american government stopped pretending it gave a shit about there own bill of rights a long time ago. They also guarntee people a fair and speedy trail. So they hold people off of US soil to get around that, you're free from invasive searchers without a reasonable suspicion, they have decided getting on a plane is 'reasonable suspicion'

Basically there whole bill of rights is a joke.
