Unlike previous entries there will be no real life model for Lara Croft, instead she will be a new character built as someone unique from the ground up. |

Uhmm.. so why call it Tomb Raider..? (Gothic 4/Arcania, anyone?) Surely Square doesn't need to make cheap stabs for the sake of cash.. they have a huge cash cow called Final Fantasy.. HUUUUGE..
I know it's early days yet and these are just rumours etc but it's this kinda cashing in on names that really peeves me. Hopefully it won't be a total cash-in.... but it beggars the question, why not just make a completely separate game and not call it Tomb Raider? Square certainly have both the creative and financial clout as well as the positioning in the market that pretty much any game they make is going to be bought by millions.. so why...? _________________

because existing ip's sell better then new ip's?
Also if memory serves Square aren't actually doing that well financially. _________________

I like the sound of it, it actually sounds like what Tomb Raider SHOULD have been all along.
I'm with Benza though, I hope you just find some dodgy map that gives a rough layout and that's about it. From memory I don't remember other Tomb Raider titles having a minimap, but then I haven't played any since Angel of Darkness.

What???
Tome Raider, the original game, was fantastic... everything after that has slowly gone more and more wrong. To change it completely into something else entirely, is to not be making a Tomb Raider game, period.
It may be a great game, great concept etc.. but that still doesn't make it a Tomb Raider game if all that is left is the namesake. It's one thing if the original Tomb Raider was crap.. but it wasn't. _________________

So Symphony of the Night shouldn't be considered a Castlevania game seeing as it plays COMPLETELY differently to all others before it?

Wow for warcraft, every third castlevania game, sands of time isn't really prince of persia? Donky Kong Country? Mario Kart/Party/Tennis/Soccer/Ostrich racing etc? _________________

This has potential, but crafting an open world island with decent Tomb Raider-esqe exploration/puzzles will be hard to do. Here's hoping they're up to the task! _________________

The only one I really thought was great was Tomb Raider Anniversary
This actually sounds really good! No word on which consoles and if there will be a PC version? _________________

^Most recent title is on the PC/360/PS3 platform. So maybe so with this one?
Haven't been playing the series, I have interest in the "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light" recently which is also supposedly non-linear. So it seems like they are revamping the series. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Maybe I'm crazy, but haven't they declared EVERY Tomb Raider game since "Angel of Darkness" a 'reboot'?

My favourite is actually still the original. Sure the controls are clunky and the graphics look pretty bad, but the level design was (and still is) absolutely fantastic. _________________

The original games were great, but I have to admit that nowadays the grid-based movement doesn't do it for me anymore. *walk to edge of platform* *hop backwards once* *run forward and press jump* Success guaranteed once you know the mechanics. Where's the challenge in that? And it really feels like, I dunno, a nicely designed virtual world limited to the "just-a-game" grid-based structure, rather than giving you the feeling you're in a "real" world?
Eh, I'm not good at explaining this, but basically; as much as I loved the original games, that whole grid-based movement is like a constant reminder that I'm just playing a game and it prevents me from really getting immersed into the games' worlds. At least now, it didn't bug me when I first played them; 3D games were new to me back then. I like the fact that Crystal Dynamics' TR games got rid of the grid-based movement (so did Angel of Darkness, but well, you know). The combat still isn't all that great, though.
With all that said, this reboot seems like it really might bring another truly high-quality TR game, which is something I have yet to see from Crystal Dynamics. Not that their TR games are bad, but none of them have really blown me away either. Maybe this time...?

The only Tomb Raider I've played all the way through was Legend, which I really enjoyed apart from a couple of bossfights, but this is sounding excellent. I started both Anniversary and Underworld and never finished them, Anniversary because I didn't have a controller for the PC version and Underworld beecause I just couldn't get the feel of it (it's a weird issue but the game just did not feel right), and I've been jonesing for a more modern Tomb to Raid. Some Uncharted-esque animations would be delicious wrapped around a more platform-focused game, and I adore this muddy, shipwrecked, middle-of-a-monsoon style they've got going. Lara looks like she's crawled through a gauntlet of shattered trees while fighting off tigers and it's beautiful. _________________
