I have to express my hatred for the Top Gear special event. A narrow track with retarded disqualification rules. You hit another car too fast - disqualified. They hit YOU a little too fast - disqualified.

The Combi one was hard enough to get gold, a fleet of old lady drivers in single file on a narrow track, forcing you to push hard on the inside to get ahead. Most of the time the AI will blindly stick to the driving line and act as if you are completely invisible. They'll either continually drive into you, slowing both of you down. Or hit you at speed and get you disqualified.

The Intermediate one is even worse. Same rules, except you're in a Lotus Elise and it has soft tyres on. So you have the added challenge of sliding everywhere. You can pump traction control up to 10 and put active steering to Strong, which gives you tighter steering and more control overall, but if you do happen to get sideways, the tyres spin way too much before getting grip. So as you're flying sideways you're getting no forward momentum whatsoever until you can stop the tyres spinning to get grip again.

It's gonna be a pain in the ass to gold. A lot of the events and license tests seem to have retarded disqualification rules. You shouldn't get disqualified for being hit by an AI controlled car.

EDIT: Ok I just got Gold on the Top Gear Lotus Elise event after chillin out for a bit. I had traction control on 5 and active steering on Strong, that seemed to be a good middle ground (leave ABS on 1). If you feel you're going to slide out on a narrow corner, most of the time it's better to brake and slow right down than ride it out.

Has anyone set up a private race with a friend yet. Just tried and couldn't figure it out. Also I have added my own music but can't hear it because of the obnoxiously loud engine. I can't for the life of me find an option to allow me to turn the engine volume down?

Sorted it out. But still the problem with the music?

Did that unlock the test track for regular use? I've been trying the VW one, and I barely missed 1st place by a tenth of a second. I haven't been able to do better since then. When doing the Lotus challenge, I noticed there's a part on the hammerhead that can be cut throughwithout getting DQ'd which would allow for as much two overtakes.

thats because its real wheel drive, youre not supposed to accelerate out of a spin. and I thought soft tyres were supposed to give you more grip not less. I had a bit of trouble with those 2 Top Gear challenges but managed to get gold. The intermediate Nascar ones are way harder.

It's Gran Turismo...it's what the people wanted. It's the exact same mechanics, with better graphics and some extra stuff thrown in. That's what sequels are for.

I love it for what it is, not for what someone else tells me it should be.

I must admit that I was a bit disappointed in the game after my first 10 hours or so. Reading this post made me think quite a bit and your points are very valid. I would say however that given this was the first effort on the PS3 and given the time it took to deliver, the expectations level was probably that bit higher.

In regards to GT4 with better graphics and a few additions it hits the mark, personally I just feel left that little bit wanting. My hope is that as I get the chance to clock more hours this feeling goes away - we brought home our new baby on Thursday so my attention has not been as focused on GT5 as I was expecting icon_biggrin.gif

I picked up a logitech GT steering wheel on friday, and I had a quick go and it certainly makes the game more fun... But i obviously couldn't get the wheel to be stable on my lap, so I've ordered a wheel stand from overseas. In the meantime I really don't want to play the game with just the controller so it's back to Fallout: NV for a week or two...

I totally agree with Alex on the user interface side of things. With just a little thought they could've made it so much easier to use. There's no good reason why you have to whizz in and out of several levels of menus. All the options you're likely to need from any screen should be there directly on that screen. Schoolboy user interface design.

Frustrates me no end with say the special event things where if you get disqualified you can restart straight away, if you pass though, but not good enough, you have to wait for the trophy to come up, then wait for the result, press button, wait for event screen to come up, press button.

For the Top Gear event, if you get gold with the Combi's then it unlocks the track for arcade and practice modes.

The intermediate NASCAR ones....I would hope they're somewhat easier with a wheel than a controller. Took me a fair while with my controller to figure out the best way to do those. Eventually got gold on them all though. It's all about finesse and carrying as much speed as possible into the bends.

Given all the talk about improved car sounds, I've been pretty disappointed in what I've heard so far. I have a few muscle cars and they don't sound all that good. Until I tried the behind car view. Suddenly you hear some great car noises. As soon as you go to one of the other views though, it changes so much that most of the cars sound pretty similar icon_sad.gif

Bit disappointed in the music too. OK, you can use your own, but GT3 had plenty of great driving tracks

this has got to be the best collecting game i have played in a long while.
i did it a bit with the old gt's but this one i think im enjoying more, everytime i see an old beauty of a car in the used dealership i just have to buy it.

so my little request, if anyone has some old beast or beauty. and they just want to get rid of them, i will gladly accept.

a little disapointed my car isnt in the game. (havent seen it in any lists) and that the monaro has no in car view, but still absolutely loving it.

I'm reasonably impressed with the soundtrack:
- Eagles of Death Metal
- Kele
- Them Crooked Vultures
- Queens of the Stone Age
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs
And some decent dance. Okay so it's not on par with a GTA/Wipeout/Motorstorm or even Dirt 2 but it's above par for a GT. Although I do miss Garbage - As Heaven Is Wide (GT) and Grinspoon - Champion (GT3). Customise.

Glad to see some Sub-Focus on the soundtrack. Anyway it seems that partial damage is unlocked at level 20, with full physical/mechanical damage unlocked at level 40. Same goes for the AI progression. A lot of flak towards reviews that didn't even reach level 20, let-alone 40, yet slammed GT5 for it's lack of damage and poor AI xD.

Personally I'm at A-spec level 12 (sooo close to 13), just bronzed all of the intermediate AMG Driving Academy (damn that thing is fast) on my 1st attempt but only just scraped through each time. Really enjoying tuning up a few muscle cars, thinking I should tackle Rally events soon though.

Yep, from memory it unlocked when I went back to the GT Life screen.

Sorry, I meant to type Comfort Hard. And yeah from least grip to most it goes Hard - Soft, Comfort - Racing. So they give you tyres with the least grip, which is why you slide everywhere.

Lol funnily enough I was the opposite, the Top Gear races annoyed me, whereas I nailed the Intermediate Nascar challenges either first shot or after a few.

Haha, dude, I must of bought the exact same one as you. I saw it and thought "must have" as I hadn't seen any other Holdens previously.

How much are you willing to pay for a decent wheel stand? icon_razz.gif
This is the one I ordered: http://www.wheelstandpro.com/
$225 shipped from Poland to Australia, there is an Aussie distributor but they are only $7 cheaper and aren't getting any more stock in until January.
I know I could have gotten a cheaper solution if I'd put some effort it, but this suits all my needs and I can simply fold it into a cupboard while I'm not using it. I can't really justify the cost, but I already had the wheel right? icon_razz.gif

then went into B-spec thinking cool i have a monaro, then realised i needed that damn yaris again haha.

So got my promo last night. Loaded it up.

Amazing lighting engine, model work on premium cars and shader work...

But what the f**k at the shadow map resolution? The shadows are horrid. It's so obvious too when compared to everything else.

That major gripe of mine aside, game's exactly as one would assume: polished with a lot of attention to detail. I will likely not play it much either because simulators and I don't mix.

Some light reading seems to suggest that shadow maps were the compromise for 60FPS and all the other procedural and memory-heavy features drawing on the CPU and GPU.

Think they're finally maxing out the hardware, and something had to give?

New update, and YAY!

My game won't load!

For a polished 5 year in the making game, this is a disgrace. It's frozen twice in gameplay and an update has ruined my installation.
