I don't bash the RIAA or MPAA but then again, I rarely hear of them actually DOING anything. So maybe I should bash them for not actually following through on every occasion.

@ Passa

I don't think anyone here is being anymore self-righteous than if some bugger cut infront of you on the road (I use my verbal road rage as a good surrogate for acceptible levels of vitriol in polite society).

I think we can probably all agree that something has to be done about piracy and that it should involve some level of carrot and stick. I like Benza's idea of encouraging legit purchases through additional content, but in terms of deterents for copywrite infringement -- I don't think anyone (especially the industry) has a good answer for that yet.

@ Passa

Not knowing the legal side of things, but is a letter serving a fee really equivalent to extortion -- isn't that just seeking to recoup loses for product/services that haven't been settled legally?

Will everyone here also continue the self congratulatory "piracy is theft!" pat on the backs when Uwe Boll starts doling out the extortion letters to people who pirate his film adaptation of The Witcher, like he did with Far Cry

Yep. Because everybody deserves protection under the law, no matter how much you like them or their creative output.
My argument wouldn't change no matter whose intellectual property was being infringed.

Also, I will never stop patting myself on the back for having opinions on the internet, it makes me feel like a big man icon_smile.gif

*EDIT*
Also, Benza, I apologise. You are right, I did not read your arguments correctly and jumped on my high horse far to soon. I stand by everything I said, but not the way I directed it at you.

I feel one reason for mass piracy is the amount of poor games being produced. "Shovelware" as everyone calls it. It wasn't piracy, it was the mass amounts of crap video games being produced that cause the video game crash of 83. It seems like the industry hasn't learnt from that.

Interesting that even though piracy seems to be a more recent thing only due to it becoming easier to gain a copy, that we still see rich actors, rich musicians, rich producers, rich game developers, etc. People are still profiting.

Recent? Piracy of games has been around pretty much since writing to physical media ahs been available to consumers - hell, I recall my brother and his friends swapping boxes of 5 1/4 inch discs all the time, complete with photocopies of manual where that sort of 'type in word 5 of line 7 on page 20 of the manual' (etc.) DRM was present.

Nothing recent about it.

My dad was actually downloading games on his Apple II/e. I never really thought about it at all at the time, but that's pretty bad arse (this is a good 20 years ago, maybe more).

Of course piracy has gotten more prevalent since I was playing the copied floppy disc version of duke nukem, but then so have computers. So has it really grown percent wise or are there just more people using computers?

Actually asking the question there as I have no idea on the stats.
